... The term tourist cave refers to an underground cavity, artificial or natural, exploited for tourist purposes, which may have been prepared for visits, has staff to guide the visit and may require payment in advance for the service provided (Šebela et al., 2013). In this sense, volcanic caves are an important tourist resource for the Canary Islands and receive a large number of tourists each year who visit them, confident that the managers and those responsible for them have adopted the necessary safety protocols (Sanmiquel et al., 2018). There is also an important group of workers who carry out their work inside the caves, such as guides and maintenance personnel. ...
... Responsible management of a tourist cave must ensure the safety of workers and visitors, the enjoyment of the tourist resource, and sustainable management to maintain the environmental and natural balance of the cave (Cigna, 1993). Radon exposure of tourists and workers is a major natural hazard faced by tourist cave managers and many studies have been conducted in these caves around the world (Anderson et al., 2021;Grygier et al., 2022;le Roux et al., 2023;Sanmiquel et al., 2018;Solomon et al., 1996). Safety and environmental and natural balance are compromised by the natural hazards that can affect underground caves. ...

Plain Language Summary In our study, we explored the popular volcanic caves in the Canary Islands, a hit among those who love ecotourism and geotourism, and also among beachgoers looking for something different to do on their vacation. These six caves, all managed by the island’s local authorities, offer a unique adventure but come with their own set of risks, like exposure to radon gas‐a natural hazard in such environments. To keep everyone safe, we delved into the best ways to monitor and manage radon levels, drawing on the latest research and what’s been learned from other tourist caves. Our work led to the development of a new plan that fits within current health and safety laws, aimed at reducing any health risks to visitors and staff. This plan is a step forward in making sure that exploring these magnificent caves is not only an unforgettable experience but also a safe one for everyone involved.
... Our planet has a complex geological history of 4.5 billion years, with various periods of agglutination and dispersion of continents, and opening and closing oceans imply change, forming important concentrations of metals and energy resources (Hazen 2010). Many regions around the world have mining activity-related history, such as the Rammelsberg Mine in Germany, the coal mines in Wales, the Wieliczka salt mine in Poland, Spain's La Union Mine, the Gambatesa Mine in Italy, and the Lousal Mine in Portugal (Sanmiquel 2018). In Brazil, the Quadrilátero Ferrífero region is an example of how mining activity has brought great benefits and development to society. ...

The main gold deposit discoveries in Minas Gerais during the colonial period occurred in the Mariana Anticline region, southeast of the Quadrilátero Ferrífero. Since then, it has been the target of gold extraction and exhaustively studied, which has given the region great significance. This paper describes and makes a quantitative assessment of Chico Rei and Passagem geo-mining heritages. These geo-mining sites show the important geological processes of the earth’s crust during the Paleoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic, and the gold mining history, through its methods and techniques used in two distinct historical periods. Gold deposits occur along the main mineralized zone on the stratigraphic levels of the Caraça and Itabira groups. In the Chico Rei Mine, gold mineralization occurs mainly as quartz-sulfide veins hosted in the itabirites of Cauê Formation. Its operation marks the colonial period, where slave labor was used to mine gold with rudimentary techniques and also when geological knowledge was not satisfactory. In the Passagem Mine, gold mineralization is stratiform tourmalinites and quartz-tourmaline-sulfide veins hosted in Batatal Formation. The Passagem Mine, created in 1819, represents the imperial period, marked by the opening of the Brazilian ports, bringing geological knowledge and new techniques for decadent gold production, through its greatest exponent in the region, the Baron of Eschwege. The quantitative evaluation of the Chico Rei and Passagem mines using the GEOSSIT platform shows us that the two geosites have international scientific relevance, national relevance for educational and tourist use, and low risk of degradation.

Caves represent natural phenomena that have been used by man since ancient times, first as a refuge and dwelling, and later as objects of research and tourism. In the karst landscape of Slovak Republic in Central Europe, more than 7000 caves are registered in a relatively small area, of which 18 are open to the public. This paper deals with the analysis of the speleotourism potential of 12 of these caves, administered by the Slovak Caves Administration. Based on the obtained data, we first evaluate the number of visitors in 2010–2019. Using a public opinion survey among visitors, we then evaluate the individual indicators of quality and each cave’s resulting potential. We use a modified standardization methodology and standardization of individual evaluation criteria weights for individual evaluation indicators. The resulting values of the potential of caves for speleotourism point to the great importance of these sites for domestic and foreign tourism and the protection of nature and landscape, as 5 of these caves have been part of the UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage List since 1995.

The Metaliferi Mountains (Western Romania) are known worldwide as the richest gold region in Romania and hosts for numerous porphyry and epithermal deposits. In these mountains, mining for gold dates back to Roman and even pre-Roman times. The Golden Quadrilateral constitutes a remarkable example of an area having a significant geological and mining heritage. The main purposes of this work are to emphasize this heritage, to present, for the first time, an assessment of the geological and mining heritage of the Golden Quadrilateral as a possible geotourism destination, and to point out the important role that geotourism could have in the sustainable development of local communities. To achieve our goals, the features of thirteen sites are presented, and two geotourism itineraries are proposed. A quantitative assessment of the geosites’ capacity to support scientific, educational, and geotourism/recreational uses indicates that the Golden Quadrilateral presents a high potential not only for scientific studies but, also, for enhancement of the public understanding of science; geotourism could be part of the development strategy of rural areas. The two museums (Gold Museum and Gold Mining Museum) can have an important contribution both to the geo-education of visitors and in promoting the sustainable development of the region.
