On the northeastern flank of the Bay of Bengal, the St. Martin’s Island, a sedimentary continental formation, is the only maritime island and an Ecologically Critical Area of Bangladesh. Rock beds fringing the island from supratidal to subtidal zone with a subtidal depth around 10 m and presence of non-reef forming scleractinian corals from lower rocky intertidal to about 200–600 m offshore comprise a rich but least-explored rocky tidal habitat. Addressing the knowledge gap, during December 2017, an expedition was conducted to observe fish diversity caught in beach seines, gillnets and drifting handlines. Studying morphological and meristic characters of the collected specimens revealed 7 bony fish species for the first time in Bangladesh and northern seaboard of the Bay of Bengal. These are Ablennes hians, Callionymus erythraeus, Ellochelon vaigiensis, Grammatobothus polyophthalmus, Istiblennius dussumieri, Omobranchus punctatus, and Trichonotus setiger. The family Trichonotidae and the genera Ablennes, Callionymus, Grammatobothus, and Istiblennius, too, represent the first record for Bangladesh. Omobranchus punctatus, I. dussumieri, C. erythraeus and T. setiger were strongly associated with the tidal boulder beds.Grammatobothus polyophthalmus, a flounder threatened by shrimp harvesting, was caught in trawling gillnet operated in the surrounding subtidal waters. Ellochelon vaigiensis, a catadromous mullet known to spend natal stages near shoreline, was collected from a rock-pool. Fish diversity of the St. Martin’s Island is not well understood; the last comprehensive checklist dated back to 1997. Thus, these results remarkably obtained from a cursory expedition entail a thorough diversity assessment of the island.

This paper brings the first distributional record of a sand diver fish of the family Trichonotidae: Trichonotus cyclograptus (Alcock, 1890) from the southern part of East Coast, India. The specimen reported was collected from the fish landing site at Kasimedu, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Until now, only one species of the family Trichonotidae i.e., Trichonotus setiger Bloch & Schneider, 1801 has been reported from southern part of east coast, and the present report adds the tally to two species under this family for this region. Though Trichonotus cyclograptus (Alcock, 1890) was originally described from Odisha coast, only recently this species has been reported from the coast of West Bengal. The present report confirms the distribution of this species along the Indian coast of Bay of Bengal, and the probable case of endemism to this region due to the absence of reports from elsewhere since its original description.

An updated systematic inventory of the fish faunal variety from the state of West Bengal, comprising 894 species represented by 36 orders and 152 families, has been produced following an extensive review of the literature. Diversity-wise, order Acanthuriformes, has 19 families and 120 species, is the top order of both freshwater and marine fishes. Cypriniformes, which has 7 families and 117 species, is the second most diverse order and the most diverse order in freshwater. Cyprinidae, makes up 6% of the entire fish population in West Bengal, is the family with the most diversity. Marine fishes showed the highest diversity in Gobiidae and Carangidae with 5.6% and 4.8% respectively. 221 species are fully freshwater species, whereas 297 species are marine. The rest of the species are associated with fresh water, brackish and marine habitats. According to the IUCN red list status, 8 species belong to the critically endangered category, 18 belong to the endangered category, 30 species belong to the vulnerable category and 37 species belong to the near threatened category. The conservation status of 239 fish species found in West Bengal has not yet been determined by IUCN. The present study is the first attempt to provide a comprehensive data of fish faunal diversity occurring from all the habitats present in West Bengal, which will ultimately help in the management of the prospects of fisheries resources from West Bengal as well as provide support for the effective conservational planning process.
