... It contains fluid loss additives to prevent fluid loss of cement in cementing operations. The use of borates as cement fluid loss additives has also been suggested (Szymanski et al., 2008;Ozdemir et al., 2022). Toka (2008) used sodium borate instead of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), which is widely used in the activation of bentonites, considering that sodium borate, known as borax, can prevent the decomposition of doped bentonites. ...
To be able to provide stability for fresh water-based drilling fluids systems is still a considerable controversy in high-temperature and high clay-bearing environments. It is a well-known fact that fresh water-based drilling fluids are losing their stability in high-temperature environments. The viscosity and the water loss of these muds are increasing. It is even getting worse coupling with shale contamination. In order to get over these problems, different types of polymers are used as additives, which in the end might cause additional drilling-related issues and also an additional cost to overall drilling operations.
The usage of Borax as an additive is not that common in the drilling industry. Its effect on rheological and water loss properties is not very well-defined, especially at high temperatures and in a contaminated environment.
The main goal of this study is to test Borax as a fresh water-based drilling fluid additive under elevated temperature and contamination conditions. The variation of rheological properties is investigated with a conventional viscometer. The water loss properties are examined using a high-temperature, high-pressure (HTHP) water loss testing apparatus. Numerous tests were performed at temperature conditions ranging from room temperature to 200 0F (93 0C) and a filtration pressure of 100 psi (0.7 MPa). The experiments were also repeated using OCMA (Oil Company Materials Association) clay to mimic shale contamination.
The experiments have resulted in acceptable rheological properties and filtration rates for the fresh water-based mud at high temperatures. The experimental results promise that properly formulated fresh water-based drilling fluids with Borax might be a potential choice in wells expecting high temperature and shale contamination besides their low-cost advantages.

... Prediction of the drilling program required for the newly drilled wells by using the drilling data of the wells that have already been drilled in a field or basin is very important to determine the operating time of bit, tripping time, and the amount of weight on bit (WOB) along with rotation speed for each bit. The models developed that the ROPs in the wells to be drilled can be predicted by using the penetration rates, weights on bits, rotation speeds and formation properties of the pre-drilled wells exist in the literature (Türkay and Gümrah 1987;Reddish and Yaşar 1996;Yaşar et al. 2011;Ozdemir 2012;Hapnes 2014;Erdoğan et al. 2018;Kor and Altun 2020a,b;Konbul et al. 2020;Liu et al. 2020;Yang et al. 2020;Kor et al. 2021;Hazbeh et al. 2021;Ozdemir et al. 2022 and their references). Differences in the comparison of the envisaged program and the actual field data, the variability of the drilling parameters applied, and the drilled formation serve to notice that the drilled formation will show different properties than the previously determined ones. ...

It is of great importance that the drilling program required for the newly drilled wells is
estimated by using the drilling data of the previously drilled wells in a field or basin to
complete the drilling under economic and optimum conditions within the estimated
time. In this study, in the Southeastern Anatolia and Thrace basins of Turkey, where
both oil and gas exploration and production are performed, a new approach has been
presented for the estimation of drilling time before drilling, using the rate of
penetrations (ROPs), weights on bit (WOB), rotation speeds, and actual (net) drilling
times of the previously drilled wells as well as based on the formation thicknesses
predicted by the geological and geophysical data provided from any field. For the
formations in both basins, equations for the actual drilling time estimation and drillability
factors have been determined depending on them. The results of the new approach
show that the actual drilling times can be estimated with high accuracy according to the
formation thickness to be drilled before drilling. Moreover, ROPs can be forecasted
based on the estimated actual drilling times.
