We have been developing neutron color image intensifiers (hereafter abbreviated as NCIIs) for static neutron sources. With the recent progress of high power pulsed neutron sources, needs for energy selective neutron imaging are increasing. To fulfil suchrequirements, we have newly developed NCIIs having a high-speed blanking (gating) circuit and an...

... basic configuration of the neutron radiography using NCII is shown in Fig. 1. NCII is installed in a neutron irradiation room in Hokkaido University LINAC. Samples are set in front of the input screen of NCII, and are irradiated with the collimated neutron beam. NCII is remotely operated from the control room outside the shielding wall, by monitoring PC informations and camera images. NCII, the main part of the ...

This paper presents a mathematical model which describes the behavior of the electric arc in power circuits. The arc is studied like a circuit component. Arc equations are analyzed for static and dynamic situations to define a small signal model. Simulation results and experimental results are given for common arc ignition cases.

A sample-motion-synchronized neutron stroboscope is developed using the RIKEN accelerator-based compact neutron source (RANS). When a sample reaches a specified rotation phase, a phase timing signal is generated, triggering a proton pulse at the proton accelerator. A neutron pulse exposes the imaging detector through the sample. By controlling the delay time between the phase signal and the proton pulse timing, the neutron exposure timing is always synchronized with the specific sample rotation phase. A sample rotating at a speed of 1800 RPM is prepared, and clear still images of neutrons are taken.

Scrap tyres are one of the most serious wastes that are landfilled with small percentages. Recycled scrap tyres are being used in different domains of industry because they are notdegradable. The experimental work focused on mechanical properties and durability indicators of self-compacting sand concretes blended with recycled rubber. Such modified concretes comprised 5, 10, 15 and 20% of rubber fine powder (RFP) and coarse particles (RCP) as partial substitutions of natural sand and aggregates. To shed light on physical and mechanical properties rubber particles effects, ordinary vibrated and self-compacting as well as self-compacting sand concretes (SCSCs) were characterised. Special attention was given to compression and bending performances of SCSCs. Identification of two durability indicators — water porosity and density — was assessed, according to AFGC specifications. Experimental findings enhanced previous literature reported statements and demonstrated that use of rubber particles as substitutes improved performances of elaborated SCSCs and produced eco-friendly materials that are appropriate for large surface applications such as pavements and terraces as well as civil engineering constructions.

The Energy-Resolved Neutron Imaging System “RADEN” has been constructed at the beam line of BL22 in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility (MLF) of J-PARC. This instrument is the first beam line dedicated for the pulsed neutron imaging experiment in the world. In November 2014, the first neutron beam was delivered to this beam line successfully, and on-beam commissioning study has started. The user programs started partially in 2015. In this paper, we introduce the specifications of our new beam line and present some results of on-beam commissioning and some demonstration study.

By using a composite source system, we measured radiographs of the thermal neutron and keV X-ray in the 45-MeV electron linear accelerator facility at Hokkaido University. The source system provides the alternative beam of neutron and X-ray by switching the production target onto the electron beam axis. In the measurement to demonstrate a complementary imaging, the detector based on a vacuum-tube type neutron color image intensifier was applied to the both beams for dual-purpose. On the other hand, for reducing background in a neutron transmission spectrum, test measurements using a gadolinium-type neutron grid were performed with a cold neutron source at Hokkaido University. In addition, the simulations of the neutron and X-ray transmissions for various substances were performed using the PHITS code. A data analysis procedure for estimating the substance of sample was investigated through the simulations.
