ABSTRACT Background : Vitamin D (VD) insufficiency has been linked to a number of autoimmune illnesses including, alopecia areata (AA). To distinguish between clinically common hair problems, trichoscopy is a beneficial non-invasive, rapid, and affordable procedure that is yet neglected. Objective : to evaluate trichoscopic patterns and severity in various clinical categories of AA considering vitamin D level (VDL). Also, focusing on specific patterns of trichoscopy in AA related to VDL. Subject and Methods : Severity of Alopecia Tool (SALT) was used to clinically assess patients with AA scores. Trichoscopic patterns were analyzed concerning VDL and disease severity. The VDL was estimated for 59 patients and 60 healthy controls. Results : VDL was higher in healthy controls than in AA patients. The most common trichoscopic findings seen in our study were yellow dots (77.97%), followed by black dots (67.8%), and broken hairs (59.32%). Short vellus hairs and yellow dots were the most common in remitting AA. In progressive AA, the most common findings were broken hairs, yellow dots, and tapering hairs. VDL was significantly higher in both mild and moderate AA. Conclusions VDL was significantly lower in severe AA and active progressive disease. Trichoscopic features could predict disease activity and VDL in patients with AA. Broken and tapering hairs will be more represented in patients with progressive disease. Short vellus hairs were seen more in stable or remitting disease. Furthermore, black dots and broken hairs were more prevalent in AA with deficient VDL.

This cross-sectional study of 341 women in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, compared a 1-point-in-time vitamin D intake measurement assessed by the Semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire with bone mineral density (BMD) at the lumbar spine and femur in pre- and post-menopausal women. Premenopausal women had significantly higher BMD at the lumbar spine and femur compared with postmenopausal women (P < .01). A significant positive association was seen between dietary vitamin D intake (95.5 ± 81.54 IU/day) and femur BMD at the trochanter (P < .05). Vitamin D intake of Saudi women is inadequate, suggesting the need for public health measures to promote improved nutrition in women and support an expansion of fortification programs.

Objectives Alopecia areata (AA) is a common immune-mediated hair disorder that presents in different clinical patterns. This study aims to find the association between vitamin D and zinc levels with AA phenotypes, to determine the common comorbidities in AA patients, and to assess the influence of age, gender, and body mass index (BMI) on AA phenotypes. Methods This is a cross-sectional study conducted at King Abdulaziz Medical City (KAMC) in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Data were collected through retrospective chart review of the electronic medical record system (BestCare) and by utilizing a structured data collection sheet. Results A total of 177 patients were clinically diagnosed with AA with a mean age of 28.37 ± 12.68 years. The mean vitamin D level was 49.14 ± 29.09 nmol/L. Zinc levels were reported in only 22 patients, among which, only one patient had deficient levels. The mean zinc level was 9.8 ± 1.5 µmol/L. Patchy alopecia areata (60.45%) was the most common phenotype followed by universalis (9%) and totalis (7%). Hypothyroidism (11.8%) was the most prevalent comorbidity followed by atopic diseases (10.7%), then both diabetes and mood disorders (6.2%). Conclusion Deficient serum vitamin D levels were present in 62.7% of patients with AA. Nevertheless, no statistically significant relation was detected between vitamin D status and patterns of alopecia areata (P=0.108). A limited number of our sample had records of zinc levels with a mean serum of 9.8 ± 1.5 µmol/L and only one patient was found to be deficient.

Objective: The present study evaluated the correlation between Vitamin D and Alkaline phosphatase levels among the Saudi population. Methods: Blood samples of patients with a complaint of pain in various body parts and other clinical symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency were tested for the levels of Vitamin D and ALP. The analyzes were carried out using SPSS version 20.0 software. Results: Vitamin D and ALP levels of 460 patients were analyzed. The mean levels of Vitamin-D and ALP were found to be 22.03±13.5 and 89.02±44.9. About 356 patients (77.4%) out of 460 had Vit-D deficiency, whereas 421 patients (91.5%) out of 460 had ALP at normal ranges. From the analysis based on the nationality, Saudi 223 patients out of 280 showed vitamin D deficiency and 257 patients out of 280 had normal ALP levels. No correlation between serum ALP and vitamin D levels was observed (r = 0.05, p = 0.2). Conclusion: serum alkaline phosphatase cannot be considered as a useful marker to represent the Vitamin D deficiency among the population.
