This paper proposes a novel approach to study the Left hand antenna using an adequate electrical model. The structure is composed by a periodic Split Ring Resonator and a metallic wires, that's why the proposed model take into consideration the model of each element and the coupling between the element. Due to the complexity of the structure, the m...

Ultra high-frequency RFID systems (UHF-RFID) offer a broad spectrum of possible applications in electronic animal identification. However, near certain materials, especially water, the read range of UHF transponders is lowered by absorption of radiation and an alteration of the transponder's resonance frequency. The latter can be countered by a spe...

... In 1968, the scientist Vaselago [19] studied a material which had, simultaneously, negative permeability () and permittivity () on a certain frequency band. He termed this material such as media left-hand (LH) which is formed by triad's vector: electric field vector, magnetic field vectors, and phase propagation vectors [2]. However, these properties are not available in natural materials but only in artificial materials called metamaterials. ...

The parameters  and  of the metamaterials must be verified through the S-parameters of unit cell given by formulas (2)(3)(4)(5)(6) and can extract them into graphs by the MATLAB program (Fig 3) ...

In this paper, the metamaterials structure and some of its benefits in antenna design are presented. Met-amaterials can be applied as defected ground structures, superstrates of antennas to enhance some parameters of the antenna such as bandwidth, gain or reduction in dimension. Depending on the values of permittivity and permeability to classify the metamaterials and apply them in the antenna design for different purposes. The metamaterial antennas are calculated and simulated based on commercial software such as CST Studio, HFSS.

... In this section, the ENG metamaterial block of the proposed antenna has been redesigned and simulated using parallel wires in a periodic array to provide more feasibility to the design. Model structure of ENG metamaterial block was proposed and designed in [25][26][27]. Pendry et al. suggested that the electromagnetic response of periodically arranged infinite thin wires is similar to that of the electromagnetic response of heavily charged low density plasma particle [25]. This kind of periodic structure has a plasma frequency in the GHz range. ...

Usually microstrip patch antennas radiate at the broadside direction. Instead of broadside direction, if a patch antenna radiates in a different direction in a controlled way, it may open a novel way of antenna array miniaturization. For conventional patch antennas, higher order resonance modes are usually considered entirely useless due to the splitting of the maximum radiated power. In this work, a generic process of modifying the higher order natural resonance mode has been proposed by using metamaterial. Because of this modification, maximum radiation in a particular direction has been achieved while the gain of the side lobe has been decreased at a great instinct. Furthermore, the main lobe is far shifted than the conventional broadside direction. Interestingly, the proposed dual band antenna radiates in two different directions in two different radiating bands, which can be very useful for the possible miniaturization of printed antenna array.
