Incidence of snakebite is common worldwide. Morbidity and mortality related to snakebite is considered as a major public health problem in rural India. The present study highlights the demographic characteristics of snakebite cases in Dharwad, Karnataka, which reflects rural India. All snakebite cases admitted during a retrospective period of 4 yea...

We describe a new species of small, terrestrial, montane pitviper (Cerrophidion) from extreme southern Sierra Madre Oriental in Veracruz, Mexico. It differs from other members of the genus in scalation, coloration, color pattern, and hemipenial ornamentation. We also report the effect of the first known case of snakebite on humans for this species...

Background: A specific phobia is an anxiety disorder that is characterised by persistent and excessive fear in the presence of the object of the phobia. Animal phobias are the most prevalent forms of specific phobia among humans. Fear of snakes is present in non-human primates which suggests its evolutionary origins as the ability to detect the thr...

Landslide disasters cause massive damages in hilly areas around the world. Thus, improving understanding of landslides among people is critical. Prior research has investigated the effectiveness of computer games in causing learning from feedback. However, an evaluation of the effectiveness of computer games for landslide education has been less ex...

The local signs and symptoms following snakebites are similar to those of cellulitis caused by bacterial infections. This leads to empirical treatment with antibiotics, which however is not supported by evidence. Procalcitonin (PCT) is a biomarker with good diagnostic accuracy for bacterial infection. We studied serum PCT concentration in 100 patie...

Background: Stature estimation is important as it provides a Forensic Anthropological measurement which may be used in identification of individuals from grossly mutilated skeletal remains, especially in mass disasters. Objective of the Study: The present study was designed to estimate the height of an individual from the per-cutaneous tibial length (PCTL) by formulating simple regression equation and multiplication factor (M.F.). Materials and Methodology: The study was conducted on a random sample of 300 students (150 male and 150 female) in the age group of 18 to 24 years from the Malwa region of Punjab. PCTL of right and left were measured with the help of spreading vernier calipers. The data was tabulated and analyzed statistically. Result: A positive correlation (r= 0.842 in males and r= 0.733 in females) was found between length of Tibia and the estimated height. A linear regression formula was derived for estimation of height from the length of right and left side of Tibia in both the genders. The regression formula derived for males was y0=80.160 +2.260x (PCTL) + 6.837 and for females was y0 = 93.302 +1.647 x (PCTL) =6.816. Conclusion: It was concluded that the stature of a deceased person from Malwa region of Punjab can be estimated by using the regression equations derived from the present investigation fairly accurately to some extent.
