Ninety‐degree pop‐ups are a type of papercraft on which a three‐dimensional (3D) structure pops up when the angle of the base fold is 90°. They are fabricated by cutting and creasing a single sheet of paper. Traditional 90° pop‐ups are limited to 3D shapes only comprising planar shapes because they are made of paper. In this paper, we present novel pop‐ups, fabricatable 90° pop‐ups that employ the 90° pop‐up mechanism, consist of components with curved shapes, and can be fabricatable using a 3D printer. We propose a method for converting a 3D model into a fabricatable 90° pop‐up. The user first interactively designs a layout of pop‐up components, and the system automatically deforms the components using the 3D model. Because the generated pop‐ups contain necessary cuts and folds, no additional assembly process is required. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method, we designed and fabricated various 90° pop‐ups using a 3D printer.
... To accomplish this, the graphic design and structural design of the textbook must be updated, taking into account the selection of a standard book size that is appropriate for children of the target age, the use of appropriate colors, whether for text or backgrounds, the use of appropriate font sizes with an interest in clarifying information in the form of 3d images, and the search for solutions for students' interaction with the textbook. Pop-ups or movable books are three-dimensional books containing pieces of paper that appear or move when the book is opened and fully folded when the book is closed (Conrado et al., 2014). The ones that can make pop-ups appear are various methods of cutting and folding, as well as on the hidden mechanisms behind and under the page. ...

This research aims to improve the visual design of information in primary school education by improving the structural and graphic design of the textbook through paper engineering of pop up interactive book based teaching material. The goal of the research is also to find a solution for textbook design that combines the benefits of an electronic book and an ordinary book by displaying images in three dimensions and content in an interactive manner to simplify and facilitate the information. The difficulty for primary school students to understand some curricula through ordinary textbooks is a research problem. In this study, we used a field study with a focus group discussion to achieve our goal, and we chose an informal ordinary book as the primary source, its title (into the crater of doom) and transforming its structure design into a pop-up book to present to primary school students and get their feedback on the method to design the pop-up book to use as an aid means of simplifying information for students, interacting with the book, and presenting the information in an interesting manner. The results of a discussion group with 33 primary school teachers divided into three groups revealed that 92% of them agreed that the design of the ordinary textbook should be updated. By presenting the researcher's pop-up book, all of them prefer to use the pop-up book as an aid in improving students' cognitive and intellectual skills. Furthermore, the results of the discussion groups with the students, a total of 35 students divided into three groups, revealed that all of them preferred to use the pop-up book in all textbooks, particularly science and social studies for 4th grade primary students. As well as making recommendations to the Ministry of Education on their performance regarding the positive impact on students of using pop-up books designed by the researcher as an aid means to students in schools and homes.

During the last decades, anatomy has become an interesting topic in education—even for laymen or schoolchildren. As medical imaging techniques become increasingly sophisticated, virtual anatomical education applications have emerged. Still, anatomical models are often preferred, as they facilitate 3D localization of anatomical structures. Recently, data physicalizations (i.e., physical visualizations) have proven to be effective and engaging—sometimes, even more than their virtual counterparts. So far, medical data physicalizations involve mainly 3D printing, which is still expensive and cumbersome. We investigate alternative forms of physicalizations, which use readily available technologies (home printers) and inexpensive materials (paper or semi‐transparent films) to generate crafts for anatomical edutainment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first computer‐generated crafting approach within an anatomical edutainment context. Our approach follows a cost‐effective, simple, and easy‐to‐employ workflow, resulting in assemblable data sculptures (i.e., semi‐transparent sliceforms). It primarily supports volumetric data (such as CT or MRI), but mesh data can also be imported. An octree slices the imported volume and an optimization step simplifies the slice configuration, proposing the optimal order for easy assembly. A packing algorithm places the resulting slices with their labels, annotations, and assembly instructions on a paper or transparent film of user‐selected size, to be printed, assembled into a sliceform, and explored. We conducted two user studies to assess our approach, demonstrating that it is an initial positive step towards the successful creation of interactive and engaging anatomical physicalizations.

Digital fabrication devices are powerful tools for creating tangible reproductions of 3D digital models. Most available printing technologies aim at producing an accurate copy of a tridimensional shape. However, fabrication technologies can also be used to create a stylistic representation of a digital shape. We refer to this class of methods as stylized fabrication methods. These methods abstract geometric and physical features of a given shape to create an unconventional representation, to produce an optical illusion, or to devise a particular interaction with the fabricated model. In this course, we classify and overview this broad and emerging class of approaches and also propose possible directions for future research.

Indonesia's legend is one part of the nations's history, that must always be maintained. Currently, most teenagers don't know or even don't care about the legends that exist in Indonesia. Legend is considered as an old-fashioned story and boring. This is feared to make the legend that became the nation's cultural heritage gradually lost as the development of times. A survey of student responses to history lessons at school has also been provided to 124 respondents. All selected respondents are teenagers ranging in age from 14 to 21 years old. The result obtained mentioned 85% of respondents considered the lesson of history is not important, boring, and not interesting. 10% of respondents answered interesting, and 5% answered relative. Pop-up book is one of the suitable design advances for teaching History. This research aims to: (i) develop pop-up book telling us about Indonesia's legend for junior high school's student, (ii) provide a short story uniquely and interestingly and (iii) describe the comparison of student's responses both of before and after using a pop-up book as an alternative learning media. The method of the research is Research and Development (R&D) with two instructional designs, Backward Design and Iterative Design. Based on the result of this research, it can be concluded that (1) this research produces a product in the form of a pop-up book entitled "Bhineka Nuswapada", 2) validation result showed that pop-up book media was feasible to use the student's responses questionnaire result showed 91.15% with very good criteria and (3) based on the media effectiveness test result, after using pop-up book media there was an improvement of student's learning outcomes with N-Gain value 0.41 in medium criteria. Therefore, Indonesia's legend pop-up story is the best alternative facility for developing the love of the homeland for junior high school's student.
