The above figure shows the dislocation of the Atlas and axis (C1 & C2) Atlas fracture exhibits 2% of all vertebral spine fractures. It happens when an axial (vertebral) compression of the skull on the Atlas forces it onto the axis resulting in rupture at the weakest point. And the motives the lateral lots to split, this is diagnosed as JEFFERSON fracture [7,6]
