The DBMS hosts the DSS database that is structured according to the EER model of Figure 3. Moreover, the communication between the DBMS and its administrator, which update the DSS database, follows client-server architecture [26] for extra security (not exposing the data tier to the web). ...

Nowadays the good or bad study program can be seen from the accreditation rank that it obtains from the institution of college accreditation. However, it is frequently found at college that there are some study programs that have the same accreditation. This encourages the college to do another approach which can do this study program ranking from a different point of view. This research developed a model of decision support system to do ranking towards 25 study programs existed in the environment of Sriwijaya State Polytechnic. Hybrid method employed the combination of analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and simple additive weighting (SAW) to do the ranking. Actual weighting model was used in the calculation based on the fact obtained in each study program, and in line with the criteria which had been determined. As many as 7 relevant criteria and 21 sub criteria were used in this model. The results of this research showed that the model which had been developed can give recommendation in the form of study program ranking with actual condition based on the data attached to each study program.
... Wu et al. (1992) proposed a decision support system for college selection for the United States, which has more than 1000 alternatives. Kostoglou et al. (2014) developed a web-based decision support system to help students determine their job and professional expectations to be used in the selection of institutes in the Greek higher education ecosystem. In their study, the researchers provided decision support to students with functions such as searching institutes/schools by department, city and according to the distance from their locations with the help of interactive maps. ...

The development in technology and internet increased the amount of options that the decision maker can choose from. The more options a decision maker has, the more likely it will lead to poor decision making. This is called the paradox of choice. In order to avoid this paradox, one can get help from software systems. These systems are generally called Decision Support Systems (DSS) and they assist decision makers to make the best decision. DSS are used in education sector both by the administrators and the teachers in addition to the students. This study analyzes the articles related to DSS in the education sector and classifies them accordingly. As a result, there are two major categories. One of them is "Management Oriented DSS" and the other one is the "Student Oriented DSS". Management-oriented decision-making systems assist managers in make crucial strategic decisions about the future, such as fixture selection, research and development and laboratory requirements, and personnel and financial resource planning. Student-centered methods improve the efficiency of learning activities and make school-university choices easier. Model and system development studies that aid decision-making in the education ecosystem from the perspectives of schools, teachers, and students were investigated in depth and presented in light of solution recommendations brought up by education stakeholders.
... Although some systems already implemented in universities incorporate modules to support decisions, this tool is inefficient due to providing only a retrospective analysis of financial or administrative data (Kostoglou et al., 2014). Therefore, the creation of efficient DSSs in the university context includes the possibility of this tool providing the amalgamation, synthesis and assessment of relevant data and information for effective decision-making (Druzdzel & Flynn, 2000). ...

The objective of this study is to determine the influence of web portals utilization on management support and performance in universities, considering the information quality of these tools. To this end, a quantitative study was made, using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) and a structured questionnaire, directed to teaching and non-teaching staff in Portuguese universities. The results obtained, from 338 valid responses, indicate a positive influence between the use of web portals, and that use of this tool influences university performance positively. The study emphasises the importance of quality of information in university information systems (ISs). Up-to-date and relevant information, serving university purposes completely, can potentially contribute to the decision support process and to university performance. Standing out as a contribution to practice is the importance of all university departments or services constructing ISs jointly. In this way, ISs that serve universities’ individual and collective needs can be achieved.

This paper identified emerging development in utilizing information technology towards the forceful dispersal of information relating to vocational skills. It focused on a significant challenge of generating funds from vocational skills. The paper justified the need for a system that provides relevant information relating to vocational skills to the learned and unlearned and generating income for those who possess the skills in a case study. The paper encapsulates a vis-a-vis oral interview and a focus group method addressing students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, with dexterous vocational skills, as well as vocational workers at the vocational centers within the OAU community in order to know their views on showcasing their skills on a web platform. Overall data were collected from 176 respondents, with 40 students who have vocational skills responding, and the remaining 136 responses from the vocational workers who are not students. The analysis attests to the fact that it is crucial to have a platform that allows people to showcase their potentials, vocational skills, dexterity, and talents.

Engineering is a widespread subject with a broad range of specializations to choose from, that it sometimes becomes hard to decide which specialization to undertake in one’s major degree. For this reason, many students will have a difficult time selecting which specialization is suitable for them. The choice they make prior to undertaking their degree is one of grave importance as it will be the basis for either their success or failure in their years of studying at the faculty of engineering. Not only this, but it also dictates if these students will land reasonable jobs and make progress in their careers or not. Currently, many factors affect a student’s decision for choosing his specialization. These factors include: family, past instructors, past experiences, passion, salary and recent employers. In this paper, we proposed an engineering specialization recommendation process by using Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP). FAHP has been proposed to help and guide students find the most suitable engineering specialization for them. The proposed recommendation process will be based on two factors. The first factor is the dependency of specialization courses on engineering fundamentals taught in the first year of engineering. The second is the dependency of a fundamental course on the student’s grade in said course.
... HE jobs profiles have been established in many countries and are used extensively by two main categories of users: a) lyceum graduates who are called to choose the field of their further studies and future profession, and b) HE students or graduates wishing to know better the vocational and academic prospects of their specialization. This paper is a further work of a research project titled "Digital map of higher technological education professions -Diguipro" that concerned the analysis and design of a digital guide, a webbased decision support system aiming to support youngsters who are about to enter, study, or have graduated at HE institutions (Kostoglou et al., 2013 and2014). The present work focuses in the development and user-friendly design of an interactive platform which is based on a mobile application aiming to provide all Diguipro functionalities to the user. ...

This work is an attempt to contribute to the knowledge and guidance of young people (lyceum graduates, higher education students and recent graduates) regarding important issues related to their career and vocational prospects. These issues are related to major relevant questions such as 'what' and 'where' to study, as well as the contents and the prospects of all provided specializations by the departments of Greek institutes of higher education. This article focuses on the analysis and the design of a mobile-based decision support system (DSS) to assist its users in getting thoroughly informed about HE studies in Greece, and eventually in choosing their vocational prospects. An extensive literature and applications review has revealed that there are no such DDS systems, giving to this work an innovative character. The article contains all main elements of system's architecture and design including the essential technical information, presents the main features and representative screenshots of the mobile-based application and comes to conclusions and future suggested work.

Career guidance for students, particularly in rural areas is a challenging issue in India. In the present era of digitalization, there is a need of an automated system that can analyze a student for his/her capabilities, suggest a career and provide related information. Keeping in mind the requirement, the present paper is an effort in this direction. In this paper, a fuzzy based conceptual framework has been suggested. It has two parts; in the first part a students will be analyzed for his/her capabilities and in the second part the available courses, job aspects related to their capabilities will be suggested. To analyze a student, marks in various subject in 10+2 standards and vocational interest in different fields have been considered and fuzzy sets have been formed. On example basis, fuzzy inference rules have been framed for analyzing the abilities in engineering, medical and hospitality fields only. In second part, concept of composition of relations has been used to suggest the related courses and jobs.
