Nanocomposites based on polyamide 6 (PA6) and montmorillonite-type (MMT) commercial clays, either unmodified or organically modified, were prepared by in-situ polymerization of ε-caprolactam (CL). The above materials were characterized in detail by a number of experimental techniques, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), wide angle X-r...

Present paper studies the possibility to obtain polymer-clay nanocomposites using poly(3- methacrylamidopropyl (N,N-dimethyl) dodecyl ammonium bromide) and several commercial clays- Cloisite Na, Cloisite 30B, Cloisite 93A, Cloisite 20A, Cloisite 15A in three different solvents (ethanol, chloroform and propyleneglycol monomethyl ether). The reaction...

To date delamination of organo-clays is restricted to highly charged, vermiculite-type layered silicates (e.g. n-butylammonium vermiculites) while – counterintuitively – low charged, smectite-type layered silicates do not delaminate although their Coulomb interactions are much weaker. Guided by previous findings, we now identified organo-cations th...

The use of thermal barrier coatings (TBC) for turbine blades in gas turbine engines has allowed higher engine operating temperatures exceeding 1200℃ at the surface of the TBC top coat. More recently, it has been recognized that at these high temperatures the TBCs can be damaged by calcium-magnesium-alumino-silicates (CMAS) resulting from siliceous...

In the present study, the relationships between poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) structure modified by nanoparticles and the impact behavior of carbon fiber (CF) reinforced PMMA (CF/PMMA) thermoplastic nanocomposite were explored. CF/PMMA composite was prepared by nanofiller-containing methyl methacrylate monomer impregnation of fibers followed by...

Series of so far undescribed clay mineral polyamide nanocomposites (CPN) were prepared by hydrolytic polymerizations of η-capryllactam (L8), ω-laurolactam (L12) and N-methyl-ω-laurolactam (ML12) initiated with 12-aminododecanoic acid (ADA) in the presence of a organomontmorillonite (OMt). Polymerization process was markedly accelerated due to a contribution of acidolytic and cationic polymerization on the intercalated ADA and its hydrochloride. Simple kinetics of polymerization with constant number of growth centers is valid up to a high polymer yield for all the lactams under study. For the sake of comparison, polyamide 6 nanocomposites were synthesized both by the method of the in-situ ε-caprolactam (L6) polymerization and by polyamide 6 melt blending. Structures of the CPN were analyzed by X-ray diffraction.
