The present work was undertaken to study the occurrence along with the gross and histopathological features of canine cutaneous neoplasms in and around Thrissur. A total of 17 tumour samples were examined during the study. The mean age of the dogs affected with tumours was 6.55±0.59 years. The occurrence was slightly higher in males, but there was no association (p>0.05) between the sex and occurrence of skin tumours. Among the various breeds, Labradors were more affected with these tumours. Grossly, most of the tumours were round to oval in shape with soft to firm consistency and greyish white colour. Histopathological examination confirmed majority of the tumours as benign with more number of epithelial/melanocytic tumours
... The present study revealed a higher incidence of malignant form of tumours with 84 percent and lower incidence of benign form at 16 percent in comparison with other studies, which reported the incidence of malignant and benign neoplasms in canines at 51.86 % to 52.29% followed by 47.70 to 48.14 percent respectively (Simeonov et al., 2011 andGupta et al., 2009). ...

The current research work was undertaken with the objective of evaluating incidence, and histological study of canine tumours. 68 samples suspected for neoplasia from cutaneous and mammary gland origin were collected from dogs over a period of six months and were classified according to WHO classification (2002). Tumours of mesenchymal origin showed an incidence of 76.47 per cent and incidence of epithelial origin at 23.53 per cent of dogs. The highest incidence of tumours was found in female dogs than in male dogs. Age wise incidence of tumours was found between the range of 2-15 years with a mean age of 8.3 years. The breed wise incidence of tumours was highest in Labrador retriever (22.06%), followed by non-descriptive breeds (19.12%), Golden retriever (17.65%), German Shepherd dog (11.8%), Pomeranian (7.35%), Lhasa Apso (4.41 %), Daschound (4.41%), Boxer (2.94%), Saint Bernard (2.94%), Doberman (2.94%), Mudhol hound (2.94%) and Rajapalyam (1.44%). Based on histopathological classification, the incidence of cutaneous tumours was 77.94 per cent and mammary gland tumours were 22.06 per cent. Among cutaneous tumours, Mast cell tumour (17.64%) occurrence was highest followed by Hemangiosarcoma and Hepatoid gland carcinoma at 8.82% each. The occurrence of mammary gland tumours were also recorded and classified as Tubular (8.82%), Papillary (4.41%), Papillary cystic (5.88%) and carcinosarcoma (2.94%).

... According to previous reports, canine apocrine sweat gland carcinomas accounted for 2%-3% of all tumours diagnosed in dogs at the same time (11,15). The major limitation of the present study was the lack of available data on all cancer cases diagnosed in dogs during the described period, which made the estimation via free access of the ASGC prevalence and incidence in Polish population of cancer-affected dogs impossible. ...

Introduction: Apocrine sweat gland carcinomas (ASGCs) are malignant neoplasms of dogs and other animals, rarely reported worldwide. The aim of this study was to summarise the occurrence of this cancer in a population of dogs in Poland between 2009 and 2014 with regards to histological features and body location of the tumours, as well as age, sex and breed of the cancer-affected dogs. Material and Methods: The study involved 40 canine ASGC cases diagnosed in five national veterinary pathology laboratories. The material was processed according to routine histological methods. Results: Histological types of the tumours involved simple and complex apocrine carcinoma of cystic/papillary (62.5%), solid (15%), and tubular type (12.5%), as well as apocrine ductal carcinoma (10%). The epidemiological analysis revealed peak incidence of the cancer in dogs between 8 and 14 years of age, with the most commonly affected sites being forelimbs and thorax. The highest number of the cancer cases was diagnosed in mixed breed dogs and German Shepherds; no sex predilection was noted. Conclusion: To the authors’ knowledge, this is the first report recounting the study on canine malignant apocrine sweat gland tumours in Poland providing detailed phenotypical and histological data, which are otherwise rarely described in veterinary literature. This type of cancer appears to be diagnosed more frequently in dogs than in humans. Being an easily accessible material for research, canine ASGCs might serve as a relevant animal model for studies related to pathogenesis of sweat gland tumours.

A total of one hundred and fifty-three canine cutaneous tumors were examined and analyzed using the standard haematoxylin-eosin staining method. Additionally, tumors were examined immunohistochemically (41.4%) with antibodies LP34, AE1/AE3, V9 and histochemically (24.8%) with toluidine blue. Epithelial and melanocytic tumors of the skin accounted for 52.3% and mesenchymal tumours constituted 47.7%. All epidermal and follicular tumors demonstrated positive immunostaining for “LP34” antibodies. Fibromas and fibrosarcomas, which were immunohistochemically positive for antibodies “V9”, demonstrated negative immunostaining for antibodies “LP34”. As many as 47.4% of all round cell tumors showed positive staining with toluidine blue. Antibodies “LP34” are helpful for the differential diagnosis of epithelial cells of tumors in canine skin, skin adnexal and subcutaneous tissues. Antibodies “AE1/AE3” could be helpful for detecting metastatic glandular epithelial cells in the skin. Moreover, antibodies “V9” could be a useful tool to diagnose the cutaneous tumors consisting of fibrous tissue cells. Staining round cell tumors with toluidine blue may give valuable information on regarding mast cell tumors.
