The genus Spatuloricaria is diagnosed by a number of conspicuous characteristics that set it apart from other genera in the subfamily Loricariinae. The genus has a broad geographical distribution extending from Argentina to Panama. Despite the flood of new loricariid taxa described in the past decades, no new species of Spatuloricaria have been new...

A new species of whiptail armored catfish belonging to the genus Pseudohemiodon is described. The new species inhabits aquatic systems of the Orinoco River basin, mostly in the Llanos region of Colombia and Venezuela. Previously, it had identified as P. laticeps erroneously. The genus Pseudohemiodon includes seven known species inhabit Amazon and Paraná-Paraguay-Uruguay rivers basins. The new species is distinguished from congeners by the combination of the following characters: abdomen totally covered; area in front of gill opening without plates, ventrally; dorsal body color pattern without transversal dark bands, mostly in the caudal peduncle; head with straight sides; head and caudal peduncle narrower.
... 1979 from the Caquetá River basin in Colombia; and S. puganensis from the upper Amazon in Peru. The remaining three species are distributed in basins in southern South America: Spatuloricaria evansii in the Paraná-Paraguay and Beni river basins in Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil; S. nudiventris in La Plata River and São Francisco River basins in Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay; and S. tuira Fichberg, Oyakawa, and de Pinna, 2014 in the Xingú and Tapajós drainages in Brazil. ...

A new species of Spatuloricaria is described from the Orinoco River basin, Colombia. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following characters: a broad, dark brown stripe on the first pre-dorsal plate, which occupies the entire plate, reaching the preopercle, and sometimes reaching the second pre-dorsal plate; the possession of a small group of plates posterior to the urogenital pore; the abdominal surface with scattered, very small plates leaving naked areas; the possession of five transverse dark brown bands on the dorsal region; and four to five premaxillary teeth. The new species is the first valid species of Spatuloricaria distributed in the Orinoco River basin. Ecological notes of the species and comments regarding the taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of the genus are offered.
... It is interesting to note that another fish species described by Valenciennes using material supposedly collected by Saint-Hillaire in the rio São Francisco, Spatuloricaria nudiventris, was never again collected in that river basin, while the genus Spatuloricaria is known from the rio Paraguai basin. The systematics of Spatuloricaria are currently still in need of review (Fichberg et al., 2014), and it is uncertain if the holotype and so far only known specimen of Spatuloricaria nudiventris corresponds to the Spatuloricaria species occurring in the rio Paraguai basin (which is usually identified as S. evansii, a name available for that area). We suggest that both the lectotype of Chalceus hilarii and the holotype of Loricaria nudiventris were mislabeled in the same event, and that both probably were actually collected somewhere in the rio Paraguai basin. ...

The fishes herein included were collected in four small streams of the upper rio Tapajós basin. Through fieldwork carried out in 2011, 2013 and 2014 during the low water season 1.728 specimens belonging to 22 species distributed in 11 families, and five orders were captured. Characidae was the most representative family both in number of species and specimens captured. The most abundant species were Hyphessobrycon melanostichos, H. hexastichos, and H. notidanos. Five species are recognized as new, and four as endemic to the upper rio Tapajós basin. This study represents the first fish inventory for the region and will provide valuable information for the conservation of the poorly known diversity of fishes of the Chapada dos Parecis, in the headwaters of the upper rio Tapajós basin. © 2016, Universidade Estadual de Campinas UNICAMP. The Loricariinae belong to the Neotropical mailed catfish family Loricariidae, the most species-rich catfish family. Among loricariids, members of the Loricariinae are united by a long and flattened caudal peduncle and the absence of an adipose fin. Despite numerous studies of the Loricariidae, there is no comprehensive phylogeny of this morphologically highly diversified subfamily. To fill this gap, we present a molecular phylogeny of this group, including 350 representatives, based on the analysis of mitochondrial and nuclear genes (8426 positions). The resulting phylogeny indicates that Loricariinae are distributed into two sister tribes: Harttiini and Loricariini. The Harttiini tribe, as classically defined, constitutes a paraphyletic assemblage and is here restricted to the three genera Harttia, Cteniloricaria, and Harttiella. Two subtribes are distinguished within Loricariini: Farlowellina and Loricariina. Within Farlowellina, the nominal genus formed a paraphyletic group, as did Sturisoma and Sturisomatichthys. Within Loricariina, Loricaria, Crossoloricaria, and Apistoloricaria are also paraphyletic. To solve these issues, and given the lack of clear morphological diagnostic features, we propose here to synonymize several genera (Quiritixys with Harttia; East Andean members of Crossoloricaria, and Apistoloricaria with Rhadinoloricaria; Ixinandria, Hemiloricaria, Fonchiiichthys, and Leliella with Rineloricaria), to restrict others (Crossoloricaria, and Sturisomatichthys to the West Andean members, and Sturisoma to the East Andean species), and to revalidate the genus Proloricaria.

The purpose of this paper is to present an updated list of freshwater fishes found in Argentina based on the available literature. Since the last list was published in 2003, most systematical and distributional changes were presented on www.pecescriollos.de and updates have been published frequently. In only 12 years the number of species reported from Argentina has increased from 379 to 515 and the mentioned accumulative updates at the end had reached 15 pages, becoming a little bit complex and cluttered when used as supplements to the list published by López et al. (2003). After receiving several incitements we finally decided to review the available data and elaborate the present contribution. As usual in the past years already, we will continue to frequently publish updates, offering the possibility to keep updated on the species of freshwater fishes from Argentina.
