2. Schematic overview of the history of the pig (Sus scrofa). Four main events are indicated: 1) Speciation of Sus in ISEA. 2) Divergence between European and Asian S. scrofa. 3) Independent domestication leading to separate domesticated clades in Europe and Asia. 4) Hybridization between domesticated pigs from Asia and Europe.

Studying gene flow between different livestock breeds will benefit the discovery of genes related to production traits and provide insight into human historical breeding. Chinese pigs have played an indispensable role in the breeding of Western commercial pigs. However, the differences in the timing and volume of the contribution of pigs from diffe...

Due to hybridisation and breakdown of reproduction barriers the Java warty pig an endangered suid endemic to Java, may be assimilated into the gene pools of the more common Indonesian banded pig and become extinct. Here, we aimed to detect introgressive hybridisation between both suids by microsatellite genotyping warty pigs from two captive popula...

The wild boar, Sus scrofa, is an important game species widely distributed in Eurasia. Whereas the genetic variability of most European wild boar populations is well known, the status of wild boar living in Southern Italy is not as clear. We evaluated the present and past genetic diversity (D-loop, mtDNA) of the South Italian population, comparing...

Background Pigs were domesticated independently from European and Asian wild boars nearly 10,000 years ago. Chinese indigenous pigs have been historically introduced to improve Europe local pigs. However, the geographic origin and biological functions of introgressed Chinese genes in modern European pig breeds remain largely unknown. Results Here...

The genus Oryza is a model system for the study of molecular evolution over time scales ranging from a few thousand to 15 million years. Using 13 reference genomes spanning the Oryza species tree, we show that despite few large-scale chromosomal rearrangements rapid species diversification is mirrored by lineage-specific emergence and turnover of m...

A clear distinction between wild and domesticated animal species is important for Dutch legislation for either permit or forbid the use of animals in circuses and other performances. The study in this report briefly describes how domestication of animals has taken place and what the characteristic elements are for the description of the concept. In addition, the consequences of domestication for behaviour, physiology and morphology of animals and the way in which changes are passed on from generation to generation are discussed. Due to a request to the Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality to place the zebu (Bos taurus indicus) and the reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) on Appendix IV to the Animal Owners Decree, based on the literature, the extent to which both species can be considered as domesticated is evaluated. Furthermore it has been estimated what the consequences are for the well-being of specimens of these species if they are used in circuses and in other entertainment performances.
