This paper reviews the present understanding of the dynamics of two key magnetospheric disturbances, geomagnetic substorms and storms. Substorms, be-ing the basic dynamic response of the magnetosphere to the varying solar wind conditions, are an impor-tant factor in our understanding of the solar wind magnetosphere coupling processes. On the other...

... the rst question can be largely addressed by solar anddor solar wind monitoring, our capability t o a n - swer the second question depends critically on our understanding of the physical processes behind the dynamic changes in the near-Earth space. The magnetosphere is the region of near-Earth space, where the dynamics is governed by the internal geo- magnetic eld see Figure 1. The solar wind ow past the Earth distorts the dipole eld to compress it on the dayside and elongate it to a long geomagnetic tail on the nightside. ...

Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has proven to be very successful in forecasting variety of irregular magnetospheric/ionospheric processes like geomagnetic storms and substorms. SYMH and ASYH indices represent longitudinal symmetric and asymmetric component of the ring current. Here, an attempt is made to develop a prediction model for these indices...

Magnetospheric modes, including substorms, sawtooth events and steady magnetospheric convection events, have in the past been described as different responses of the magnetosphere to coupling with the solar wind. Using previously determined event lists for sawtooth events, steady magnetospheric convection events and substorms, we produce a statisti...

Electricity is a general term for a variety of phenomena resulting from the presence and flow of charge, and “Electro-technics” is the study or the science of practical and industrial applications of electricity. On the other side, the space is mainly characterized by the interaction of energetic charged particles with electric and magnetic fields, which justifies the claim «the space composes a natural laboratory of electrotechnics». This paper reviews present understanding of the dy-namics of the solar-terrestrial environment, and its impacts on the human activity, and explain processes, which establish the space as a natural laboratory of electrotechnics.
