A new bitterling from the Rhodeus amarus group is described based on morphological and molecular data. Rhodeus caspius sp. nov. from the Caspian Sea, Urmia Lake and the upper Tigris River drainages in Iran, is distinguished from its closest congeners (R. amarus and R. colchicus) by having short post-dorsal distance and caudal peduncle length and long head length. It is also characterized by one fixed diagnostic nucleotide substitutions and a K2P nearest neighbor distance of 1% to R. amarus and R. colchicus in the mtDNA COI barcode region.
... lateral line incomplete, barbels absent, two rows of light spots on dorsal fin rays, pharyngeal teeth formula 0,0,5-5,0,0, a black blotch on anterior part of dorsal fin in juveniles (absent in R. amarus (Bloch 1782), R. meridionalis Karaman 1924, and R. sericeus (Pallas, 1776)), and wing-like yolk sac projections in the larvae (Arai & Akai 1988;Li et al. 2017;Li et al. 2020). Rhodeus is distributed in two disjunct regions of Eurasia and includes about 21 species/subspecies, with 18 in East Asia, and three in Europe and West Asia (Arai et al. 2001;Bogutskaya & Komlev 2001;Bohlen et al. 2006;Li & Arai 2014; Bartáková et al. 2019;Li et al. 2020). ...

Rhodeus cyanorostris sp. nov. and R. nigrodorsalis sp. nov. are described from two tributaries of the River Yangtze, in Sichuan and Jiangxi Provinces, China, respectively. Both species have a small number of branched dorsal-fin rays (both with a mode of 8) and anal-fin rays (mode of 7-8 and 8, respectively), which makes them easily distinguished from all congeners. Rhodeus cyanorostris sp. nov. differs from R. nigrodorsalis sp. nov. in having more predorsal scales (14-16 vs. 12-13), fewer pectoral-fin rays (10-11 vs. 12), a shorter major axis of the eggs (2.5-2.8 mm vs. mostly 3.3-3.5 mm), absence of two rows of light spots on the dorsal-fin rays (vs. presence), and absence of a black blotch on the dorsal fin in adult males (vs. presence). The breeding season in winter of the two new species is unique among the Acheilognathinae.

A new genus and species, Sinorhodeus microlepis gen. et sp. nov., is described from a tributary of the Yangtze River, in Chongqing City, China. Sinorhodeus gen. nov. can be distinguished from four closely related genera, Paratanakia, Pseudorhodeus, Rhodeus, and Tanakia, by the following combination of characters: pharyngeal teeth 0,0,4–4,0,0, longitudinal scales 41–46, white spots on dorsal-fin rays absent, a black blotch on dorsal fin in juvenile absent, and less developed wing-like yolk sac projections in larvae. Phylogenetic analysis of one mitochondrial gene and six nuclear genes supports the establishment of the new genus.

Based on the results of morphological studies of materials on bitterlings (genus Rhodeus) and loaches (genus Misgurnus) collected in the Ili River basin (Kazakhstan) in 2011, it is shown for the first time that the rosy bitterling R. ocellatus and Nikolsky’s loach M. nikolskyi have naturalized in the Balkhash–Ili basin.
... A detailed morphological examination and taxonomic revision for these two species of Rhodeus is warranted. The most recently described species of Rhodeus, R. albomarginatus (Li and Arai, 2014), is morphologically most similar to R. ocellatus, but gene trees resolve the species as sister to R. shitaiensis, an example illustrating that phenetic similarity does not necessarily reflect a genealogical relationship (Fig. 1c). Incongruence between the consistently resolved nuclear and mitochondrial gene trees and morphological similarity of samples of a particular species, may explain the above examples wherein gene trees do not support some specimens from the same or different populations of a species as sharing a common lineage. ...

Rhodeus cyanorostris Li, Liao & Arai, 2020 is a freshwater fish that is endemic to China and restricted to Chengdu City in Sichuan Province. This study is the first to sequence and characterize the complete mitochondrial genome of R. cyanorostris . The mitogenome of R. cyanorostris is 16580 bp in length, including 13 protein-coding genes, two rRNA genes, 22 tRNA genes, and a control region (D-loop). The base composition of the sequence is 28.5% A, 27.6% C, 26.4% T, and 17.5% G, with a bias toward A+T. The genome structure, nucleotide composition, and codon usage of the mitogenome of R. cyanorostris are consistent with those of other species of Rhodeus . To verify the molecular phylogeny of the genus Rhodeus , we provide new insights to better understand the taxonomic status of R. cyanorostris . The phylogenetic trees present four major clades based on 19 mitogenomic sequences from 16 Rhodeus species. Rhodeus cyanorostris exhibits the closest phylogenetic relationship with R. pseudosericeus , R. amarus , and R. sericeus . This study discloses the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of R. cyanorostris for the first time and provides the most comprehensive phylogenetic reconstruction of the genus Rhodeus based on whole mitochondrial genome sequences. The information obtained in this study will provide new insights for conservation, phylogenetic analysis, and evolutionary biology research.
