The aim of this paper is to assess the relevance of the Gravity model to investigations of alliance flows within and between countries. We also aim to identify how different distance dimensions impact the choice of a partner. Inspired by economics research, we use the Gravity model to estimate and analyse bilateral alliance flows within countries a...

... is confirmed by the VIF (Variance Inflation Factor), as we find no values higher than 2 ( Neter et al ., 1985) . Table 4 helps us to analyse our two models, in which we test the impact of different distance measures on the number of alliances between country pairs . The table includes the results from the OLS with log-linear regression (OLS) as well as from the Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) . ...

Most authors agree that alliance portfolio diversity (APD) has an inverted U-shaped influence on innovation performance and is particularly important for firms with a high absorptive capacity (AC), which moderates this relationship positively. However, the reality of developing countries with weaker national innovation systems (NIS) and firms with...

How should alliance patterns respond to changing relative power? If states ally against the greatest threat, they should switch alliances if a shift in relative power makes a new state more threatening than the previous adversary. For some states, a “threat transition” will occur when the risk of a preventive war from the declining state falls belo...

... It has equally been confirmed in the ISA literature, where it is found that a "close" alliance partner according to multiple distance dimensions is preferred when creating R&D ISAs (Angué & Mayrhofer, 2010). Similarly, fewer ISAs are created as physical and cultural distance increases among ISA partners (Engsig et al., 2018). Furthermore, distances push companies to invest less in the entry mode by creating ISAs rather than resource-heavy merger or acquisitions (Moalla & Mayrhofer, 2020). ...

This paper investigates how distance, as a multidimensional concept, affects international strategic alliance formation. Building on the real options literature, we theorize that when faced with distance, partnering companies will choose to create a non-equity agreement. We argue that the strategic motives of an alliance play a moderating role in distance effects, which can push partners to create an equity agreement. We empirically test the CAGE (cultural, administrative, geographic, economic) distance framework on the choice to create an equity or a non-equity agreement in R&D, marketing and manufacturing collaborations. We find that it is necessary to test the interactive role of strategic motives in various values of distance to provide a nuanced account of how distance affects international alliance formation.
