Information system integration, which integrates information systems of trading partners throughout the supply chain, is an important aspect of supply chain integration and optimization. For example, information system integration has been shown to mitigate the bullwhip effect in supply chains. Enterprises face important challenges integrating information systems (e.g. safety issues, rapidly evolving technologies and business environments). Using (business and enterprise) ontologies as a foundation for information system integration might help overcome these challenges. In order to evaluate this approach, this paper presents an elementary material requirements planning (MRP) tool that is founded in the REA ontology as a proof of concept for building ontology-based applications that support information system integration. The purpose of this paper is to report our findings applying the ontological foundation approach while building an MRP application as part of an integrated information system.
