A physical–biological ocean model was employed to investigate characteristics of the Beibu Gulf in the northwest South China Sea (SCS) from 2011 to 2015. We adopted the spatially constrained multivariate clustering method to determine the refined marine environmental regionalization using 10 variables from the model output, and compared regionaliza...

... the regionalization of 2011-2015 means and 2013 it was not identified as an individual region. However, the in-region probabilities of 2011-2015 means was lower here (~50%) (Figure 5b), meaning that this area may also have an alternative chance of being an individual region. Most variables here, especially DOM, PHY, and SAL, have significant differences from the adjacent area (Figure 4). ...

The site AERONET-OC Bahía Blanca (BB-AERONET-OC) is located at the mouth of the Bahía Blanca Estuary, Argentina (Southwestern Atlantic Ocean), a coastal system defined by its high suspended loads and relatively low colored dissolved organic matter. The typically high turbidity of these waters makes the BB-AERONET-OC distinctive within the AERONET-O...

... After RDA, the dissolved oxygen level in the research area was negatively correlated with DIN content, which was consistent with the research results in the same area [25]. The spatial distribution of DO is also consistent with the distribution of multiyear averages [30], although different seasons will cause significant differences in the average level of dissolved oxygen, but overall, it presents a trend of higher in the north and lower in the south. COD has a higher concentration in coastal areas, which is likely to be closely related to human activities on both sides of the research area, such as a large amount of aquaculture in Xuwen County along the coast and many residential areas distributed in Haikou City on the south side. ...

The distribution and variation in environmental factors and the phytoplankton community in the Qiongzhou Strait were investigated in autumn 2015 and spring 2016. The environmental factors were different in the two seasons, as seen when using one-way ANOVA testing, principal component analysis, and cluster analysis. The temperature and levels of dissolved oxygen and soluble solids were higher in autumn, and the ammonia (NH4-N) level was much higher in spring (4.66 ± 0.97 µmol/L), which led to a higher concentration of dissolved inorganic nitrogen in the northeast area. A total of 118 species of phytoplankton were found, with 47 common species in both seasons and more species in spring. Bacillariophyta (diatom) contributed to over 80% of the relative abundance in both seasons. The species of Chrysophyta and Xanthophyta were endemic species in autumn and spring, respectively. Skeletonema costatum and Chaetoceros curvisetus were the common dominant species, with nine dominant species in both seasons. Higher abundance and biodiversity of phytoplankton appeared in spring, and their differences were mostly determined by NH4-N level, hydrodynamic conditions and artificial activities in the coastal area in the Qiongzhou Strait.
... Previous studies suggested that monsoon wind is the primary driving factor of winter circulation in the BG (Gao et al., 2017;Xia et al., 2001), which could retain the nutrients input from SCSW and WGCC in the central gulf under the effects of strong northeastern monsoon during the winter. In the late winter and early spring, with the weakening of the northeastern monsoon and hydrodynamic conditions, and the gradual increase of temperature, abundant nutrients supplied by the WGCC and SCSW (most from WGCC) are conducive to the growth of phytoplankton in the central BG, and thus phytoplankton blooms (He et al., 2019;Pan et al., 2021;Shen et al., 2018;Xu et al., 2019). Thus, the abundant nutrients supplied from WGCC and SCSW may be responsible for the frequent phytoplankton blooms in the central BG during the late winter. ...

A new data set of seasonal stable water isotopes (δD and δ¹⁸O) and temperature‐salinity profiles was applied to improve our understanding of water mass distributions and their impact on the environment of the Beibu Gulf (BG). Our study revealed that the coastal current (CC), West‐Guangdong coastal current (WGCC), and South China Sea water (SCSW) were the three dominant water masses in the BG, and their influence was exhibited in seasonal variations. The CC was the dominant contributor to the BG water during summer (43%) and fall (45%), while it changed to the intrusion of SCSW with higher salinity in winter (57%). The contribution of WGCC to the BG was relatively stable during the three seasons (24%–31%). In addition, the nutrients in the BG were greatly affected by different water mixing occurring in the gulf. The nutrients mainly originated from the CC in summer (52%–68%) and fall (32%–69%), while the dominant source shifted to the WGCC in winter (36%–69%). Moreover, the contribution of SCSW to the nutrients loading (15%–49%) in the BG was relatively high due to its high contribution (57%) to the BG water during winter. These indicated that the BG has a stable input of external nutrients from different water masses to sustain primary production in the BG. Our study uses dual water isotopes to quantify the seasonal intrusion of water masses and their impact on nutrients, providing a new method to study the impact of the distribution of water masses on nutrients in the gulf.

Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) are two important indicators of global carbon cycle. However, there are no portable analyzers available to simultaneously accomplish high-throughput field detection of them in the same sample. Herein, a simple analyzer comprising a dual-mode reactor to accomplish both chemical vapor generation and headspace sampling, and a miniature point discharge optical emission spectrometer (μPD-OES) was developed for simultaneous and high-throughput detection of DIC and DOC in seawater and lake water. Phosphoric acid and persulfate were successively injected into sample solutions to convert DIC and DOC to CO2 under the conditions of magnetic stirring and UV irradiation, respectively. Subsequently, the generated CO2 was swept into the μPD-OES for quantitation of DIC and DOC via monitoring carbon atomic emission at 193.0 nm. Under optimal conditions, limits of detection for DIC and DOC (as C) were both 0.01 mg L-1 with relative standard deviations (n = 20) better than 5% and sample throughput of 80 samples per hour. Compared to conventional analyzers, the proposed instrument provides the advantages of high throughput, compactness, low energy consumption and eliminates expensive instruments. The accuracy of the system was validated by simultaneous determination of DIC and DOC in various water samples in laboratory and field environments.
