The study uses a...

... Third, the Us-versus-Them dichotomy is explored through the defining features of personal pronoun reference laid down by McCarthy & Carter (1994), Hogeweg & Hoop (2015) and Flores-Ferrán (2017). Moreover, Fairclough (2015) highlights the way politicians use shifts in personal pronoun reference and Glover (2000) (2016), to feature one of Trump's strategies (cf. ...
... In political discourse, politicians can show how they position themselves through the shifts in indexical expressions (Fairclough, 2015). Through the use of the first-person pronoun reference in the plural, i.e., we, speakers may be hoping to index themselves in different groups, depending on the context of communication (Flores-Ferrán, 2017). According to Glover (2000) (2017) found that Trump's manipulation was at stake when he shifted from distal to proximal expressions. ...
Thesis
COVID-19 is one of the most remarkable worldwide crises of the latest decade with 33 million cases in the US as of the 1 st of July 2021. In these difficult times citizens seem to have looked up to their leaders for guidance and support (Wood & Owens & Durham, 2005) as largely represented in the media (i.e., print press, online press and social media) whose study is nevertheless beyond the scope of full coverage and analysis in this dissertation. Rather interesting for this case study is the scrutiny of the way Donald Trump, the running President of the USA at the moment COVID-19 hit the country, interacted online and established the virtual rapport with interlocutors (Walther, 1992; Crystal, 2006; Greengard, 2009; Murthy, 2013; Baym, 2015 & Burgess & Baym, 2020) given his reported multiple ways of communicating globally with a focus on the COVID pandemic in the United States. The analysis of online Twitter corpora selected from Trump’s Twitter in two periods (5 months prior and after COVID mentions in Trump’s Twitter) makes it possible to look at the way Twitter messages were encoded, particularly evidenced in indexical expressions (i.e., personal pronoun reference) and the cooperative principle, both objects of scrutiny in this piece of research. More than the linguistic choices, or possible colligations and collocations to be associated with the lexeme COVID (via corpus linguistics and a discourse-based approach, following Baker, 2006; Biber, Conrad and Reppen ,1998; as well as corpus pragmatics, in the line of Romero-Trillo, 2017), this exploratory research study of interdisciplinary kind intends to disclose relevant pragmalinguistic strategies (Sousa & Ivanova, 2012) evidenced in tweet exchanges between a leading politician in the global scenario and internet users (Mirzaeian, 2020). This dissertation brings to the fore and discusses strategies likely to strengthen or deepen the gap among interlocutors.

... Critical thinking has been defined as the ability to assess, interpret, and evaluate ideas, concepts, or arguments, and to examine the reasons for believing something (4). At a time when it appears that many people can be convinced by public statements that are taken at face value (8), and with increasing use of the Internet and social media with unreliable sources of information, the ability to think critically while being open minded appears to be as important as ever. Previous work has described indirect methods of teaching to develop critical thinking using physiological principles (4). ...

World leaders had to guide their people through difficult times in 2020, with many trying to win compliance and support via a range of channels of communication. Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, faced the same challenge. This study explores the linguistic features of his 14 COVID-related speeches in 2020, with the aim of revealing the world he constructs in them and how he furthers his political aims. A blend of corpus linguistics and critical discourse analysis is used to draw out frequent patterns of representation within the generic structure which emerged from the data. The metaphorical construction of the nation as a family, evident in lexical choices, especially we, family and together, creates a relationship of unity between President Ramaphosa and the citizens. His reference to the national addresses as ‘family meetings’ further flattens the hierarchy implied in the political relationship of governor and governed. These features have the effect of locating the speeches in a time when mediatisation was less pervasive, and in a more personal context. Simultaneously, trust and compliance are invoked by the shift in role as President from a powerful position of control, to a position of shared concern and responsibility.

This grammatical analysis of the central pronouns in Nigeria’s 2015 Presidential Debate aimed at determining their occurrence, semantic manifestations, typological and thematic distribution, and textual functions. Twenty-three central pronouns with a combined frequency of 2409 were identified and analysed using Quirk et al.’s (1985) framework. The result showed a 58% representation and a frequency of 94.6 in 1000 words, with the forms we, you, it, I, they, our emerging the most frequent. Personal pronouns were a hundred times more frequent than reflexive pronouns and fourteen times more recurring than possessives. The 1st person, 2nd person and 3rd person forms respectively represent approximately one-half, one-quarter, and one-third of total person contrast made; however, a dominance of plural over singular was seen and this was more pronounced with 2nd person. Whereas the ratio of masculine to feminine was 22:1, neuter gender was generally dominant. A dominance of subjective case over objective case was revealed while genitive case featured as determinatives only. Pronominal choices were governed by theme, structure of responses, and idiosyncrasy, as I was more concentrated under motivation for contesting than any other theme and under recognising and justifying the problem than specifying actions to be taken or making concluding marks. The multiple-authored texts used manifestly exposed the diversity of pronoun forms and their combinatory possibility, which was advantageous since the focus was not a given politician’s idiolect but the use of an aspect of language in politics, namely the central pronouns.
