Six species of Pyxine have been reported from Europe (including the Azores), but only two, Pyxine sorediata (syn. P. endochrysoides) and P. subcinerea (syn. P. chrysanthoides), are now accepted, the remaining four being excluded for various reasons. Buellia convexa is found to be a synonym of B. pulverulenta.

In this study, the diversity of Pyxine Fr. in China was assessed based on morphological and chemical traits and molecular data are inferred from ITS and mtSSU sequences. Nineteen species were recognised, including three that are new to science (i.e. P.flavicans M. X. Yang & Li S. Wang, P.hengduanensis M. X. Yang & Li S. Wang and P.yunnanensis M. X. Yang & Li S. Wang) and three records new to China were found (i.e. P.cognata Stirt., P.himalayensis Awas. and P.minuta Vain.). Pyxineyunnanensis is diagnosed by the small size of the apothecia, a white medulla of the stipe and the presence of lichexanthone. Pyxineflavicans is characterised by broad lobes, a pale yellow medulla of the stipe and the presence of atranorin. Pyxinehengduanensis can be distinguished by its pale yellow medulla, marginal labriform soralia and the absence of atranorin. Detailed descriptions of each new species are presented, along with a key to the known species of Pyxine in China.
... Initially Rogers (1986) studied Pyxine from Australia but this treatment was later updated by Kalb (1994) and Elix (2009), where 26 species were reported. Amtoft (2002) studied Pyxine from the eastern United States, Imshaug (1957) from North and Middle America, Kalb (2001) from the Greater Sonoran Desert Region, Hu & Chen (2003) from China, Moberg (1983) from Europe and Kashiwadani (1977a, b, c) from Japan. Obermayer & Kalb (2010) studied three species of Pyxine found in Tibet and adjacent regions. ...

Two new species of Pyxine with yellow medulla from saxicolous habitats are described as new to science. The new species P. punensis has an isidiate, UV+ yellow thallus with 0·3–0·6 mm wide lobes. Pyxine yercaudensis has smaller ascospores (13–16×6–7 µm), lacks vegetative propagules and lacks lichexanthone.
... and P. subcinerea Stirt. have a relatively broad distribution extending to temperate Europe (Moberg 1983). This genus is characterized by a foliose thallus, the pigmented hypothecium, the epihymenium reacting K+ purple, asci with two-to rarely three-celled brown Dirinaria-type ascospores, and 3 to 4 mm long bacillary to sublageniform conidia. ...

The Pyxine pungens complex comprises species producing atranorin in the upper cortex, lacking vegetative propagules and reacting K+ blackish purple in the pigmented medulla. Based mainly on the development of apothecia, pigmentation and development of the internal stipe and chemistry, three new species morphologically similar to P. pungens are described. Pyxine rhodesiaca and P. schechingeri are also treated and compared to this complex of species. © 2011 by the American Bryological and Lichenological Society, Inc.

On the thalline lobes of Pyxine subcinerea there are delimited patches of pruina consisting of bipyramidal prisms, bipyramids and druses of weddellite, i.e. calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD), as revealed by X-ray analysis and SEM observations. The disappearance of the crystals from older thalline areas is preceded by an increase in the frequency of corrosion figures, in the form of etch square pits, and a decrease in the number of crystals occurring on the thalline surface. These features follow a dissolution gradient from the lobe apex towards the proximal edges of the patches. The corrosion figures are linked to the thermodynamic metastability of COD. Partial dissolution of the crystals, performed in water and in EDTA, has confirmed this latter assumption. It is thought that the disappearance of pruina, which interferes with the transmission of light to the algal layer, may allow the formation of soredia in mature thalline portions.
