Based on surveys conducted in the 1980s-1990s, especially the MUSORSTOM 9 expedition, we report on the bathymetric occurences of 35 species of Conus in the Marquesas Archipelago. Four are new records of shallow-water tropical Indo-Pacific species, and six are new species that were dredged, essentially from depths between 100 and 400 meters. The species classically found in deep water elsewhere in the South Pacific are strikingly absent from the Marquesas, and the local deep-water faunule is thus highly endemic. This study confirms the Marquesas as a biogeographically outstanding archipelago, with a rather poor, but unique, benthic fauna. New species: Conus tiki spec. nov., C. dieteri spec. nov., C. pepeiu spec. nov., C. troendlei spec. nov., C. hivanus spec. nov. and C. pseudimperialis spec. nov.

The harpid neogastropod genus Oniscidia Mörch, 1852, which has not been recognized before in the northeast Pacific fossil record, is represented there by rare specimens of Oniscidia plectata (Waring, 1917) n. comb., of late early Paleocene age, in a region extending from southern California, USA to Baja California, Mexico. This species is the earliest unequivocal record of Oniscidia and its only known Paleocene record. It apparently lived in silty, inner- to middle-shelf depths, which were inherently cooler than adjacent shallower marine depths. Its habitat was subject to the influx of shallow-marine shells, especially turritellas, contained in turbidity currents emanating from nearshore depths. The global paleogeography of Oniscidia , which is presented here for the first time, has been overlooked previously because this genus has a long and complicated history of taxonomic confusion with the harpid genus Morum Röding, 1798. Oniscidia questionably originated during the Late Cretaceous (Campanian) in southern India and apparently dispersed westward through the Tethys Seaway into the New World. Paleocene and early Eocene occurrences of this genus are rare, and middle Eocene occurrences are uncommon. During the cool times of the Oligocene and into the early Miocene, it was most widespread. Its range became restricted during the middle Miocene and continued to be so during the Pliocene, Pleistocene, and modern day, with occurrences only in the Caribbean Sea region, Florida, and the western Pacific. Its distribution through warm and cool times was most likely controlled by its habitat preference for relatively deep cool waters.

The published records of marine molluscs from the Marquesas are compiled and critically examined. A total of 391 species are referenced. Presence of 365 species is verified or probable: 5 polyplacophores, 37 bivalves, 2 cephalopods and 321 gastropods. 29 species (7,95 %) are currently regarded as endemic to the archipelago and a further 6 species are represented by endemic subspecies. Three nominal species are treated as new synonyms: Natica nukahivensis Jardin, 1858 is regarded as a synonym of Natica orientalis Gmelin, 1791, Mitra obliqua Lesson, 1842 as a synonym of Mitra aurantia (Gmelin, 1791) and Mitra modesta Reeve, 1845 as a synonym of Vexillum virginalis (Lesson, 1842).

An inventory of marine molluscan species from French Polynesia has been updated following recent field collections and numerous consultations of many shells collections. A total of 2373 species were analysed of which 1702 were identified: 13 chitons, 194 bivalves, 1 scaphopod, 8 cephalopods and 1486 gastropods. The present inventory indicates that the malacological fauna is more diverse than previously reported: 1008 species were identified by Dautzenberg and Bouge (1933) and 1061 species were identified by Richard (1975). A total of 671 species were not identified of which at least 21 are new to science and will be described in the near future.

Un rapide bilan des connaissances sur la faune benthique de profondeurs supérieures à 100 m est présenté. Il permet de situer la Nouvelle-Calédonie dans l'Indo-Pacifique, en richesse spécifique comme en effort de recherche. Une analyse détaillée des campagnes d'exploration françaises, de 1984 à 2003, est faite. Un inventaire des 2515 espèces de profondeur de Nouvelle-Calédonie est ensuite dressé par groupe zoologique et ordre alphabétique des familles. Ces études ont conduit à la description de 1322 espèces nouvelles. (D'après résumé d'auteur)
