A densely integrated 1×4 wavelength selective switch (WSS) is designed and fabricated. The channel spacing is 100 GHz and the number of channels is 40. The transmission losses and the crosstalk are less than 8.8 dB and -19.4 dB, respectively.

Context 1
... chip size of the WSS becomes large and cannot be allocated in a wafer. On the other hand, we make use of a loopback configuration which enables the same AWG to be used as both a multiplexer and a demultiplexer to reduce the size of the chip and eliminate the mismatch between the center wavelengths. The structure of the loopback WSS is shown in Fig. 2. ...

We design and investigate a novel photonic integrated four-use fold-back 20 channels 100GHz spacing Echelle grating multiplexer/demultiplexer. Results show <2.5dB insertion loss, < ⁻ 45dB cross-talk, and fabrication tolerance of 0.3μm rounding corner radius.
Article
We designed and fabricated an integrated 1$,times,$4 wavelength selective switch using a silica planar lightwave circuit. The channel spacing is 100 GHz and the number of channels is 40. Signal switching experiments show the switch to be error-free and have low power penalty bit-error rate performance.
