Hyperplastic pathologies are rare developmental abnormalities of the facial skeleton. This article describes the etiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods and treatment options of benign bone hyperplasia of the facial skeleton. Hyperplasia of the facial skeleton includes the entities condylar hyperplasia, hemimandibular hyperplasia, hemifacial hyperplasia, and acromegaly. The diagnosis is frequently complicated by the minor symptoms owing to the slow growth pattern. Differential diagnosis between benign and malignant diseases is of major importance. Patient’s age, the growth activity, and clinical complaints must be considered during the decision for and planning surgical therapy. Surgical resection of a pituitary adenoma can lead to normalization of growth hormone levels in acromegaly and prevent disease progression.
