... A molecular phylogenetic study was subsequently implemented to reveal the affinity of the Alaskan specimen. The ingroup comprises 32 species of Solenostomataceae published in Bakalin et al. (2014) and 31 species published in Shaw et al. (2015); additionally 10 samples from three species were included as newly sequenced. The outgroup was represented by Marsupella anastrophylloides Bakalin, Vilnet et Maltseva from the allied family Gymnomitriaceae. ...
... It is difficult to say anything about its distribution and ecology since S. alaskanum is only known from one specimen from one location. One can only assume that the species is quite rare, like three other closely related and / or morphologically somewhat similar species Solenostoma bilobum and S. emarginatum, of which the lat- ter is an endemic of Japan, whereas the former is a Japanese-Korean endemic with several known localities in the Kuril Islands (Bakalin, 2014) as well. The third species, Solenostoma schusterianum, is a western-North American (from southern Alaska mainland and the Aleutians to Washington) boreo-montane species (l.c.). ...

The long coexistence of various floral elements, landscape diversity, and island isolation led to the formation of the richest Eurasian hemiboreal liverwort flora in the southern Kurils. This land that covers less than 5000 square kilometres and houses 242 species and two varieties of liverworts and hornworts. The flora ‘core’ is represented by hemiboreal East Asian and boreal circumpolar taxa. Other elements that have noticeable input in the flora formation are cool-temperate East Asian hypoarctomontane circumpolar and arctomontane. The distribution of some species is restricted to the thermal pools near active or dormant volcanoes or volcanic ash deposits; such species generally provide specificity to the flora. Despite the territorial proximity, the climate of each considered island is characterized by features that, in the vast majority of cases, distinguish it from the climate of the neighbouring island. The last circumstance may inspire the difference in the liverwort taxonomic composition of each of the islands. The comparison of the taxonomic composition of district floras in the Amphi-Pacific hemiarctic, boreal, and cool-temperate Asia revealed four main focal centres: East Kamchatka Peninsula and Sakhalin Island, the southern Sikhote-Alin and the East Manchurian Mountains, the mountains of the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, and the South Kurils plus northern Hokkaido. The remaining floras involved in the comparison occupy an intermediate position between these four centres.

Based on extensive bryophyte surveys across the different parts of the Anzer valley in Rize province from northeastern Turkey, a liverwort Jungermannia eucordifolia and a moss species Platyhypnum molle are reported as new to Turkey and southwestern Asia. Short descriptions, illustrations, new localities, ecological data and comparisons with morphologically similar species are provided for each of the reported species.
... Despite the distinctness of the small-leaved stolons, growing in the typical habitat of bare soil on an unpaved track together with Ditrichum spp., Cephaloziella sp., Isopaches bicrenatus and Pogonatum urnigerum, we refrain from adding the species to the list of verified records from the region. 14 Solenostoma obscurum was described from eastern North America (Evans 1919) and treated as a North American endemic until Bakalin (2014) more recently showed that the species is also widely distributed in the Asian part of the northern Pacific region. In eastern Siberia, this species is disjunctively distributed in a few localities in the Baikalsky and Khamar-Daban ranges in Irkutsk Province Brachydontium trichodes has a montane suboceanic distribution; it is rather frequent in Europe but rare in North America (Vitt and Spence 2007). ...

Introduction. We report the results of an international bryological expedition to the Khamar- Daban mountain range in Russian southern Siberia. The novel approach of integrative floristics is introduced here as a method of surveying the flora of a region by using a combination of morphological and molecular evidence to identify and verify unexpected findings. We show that use of this approach can deliver a high level of credibility in cases in which direct molecular comparison is possible or the relevant data can be easily obtained from reliable studies informing recent treatments. Integrative floristics can also be used to identify potential taxonomic problems requiring further study. Methods. Conventional identification methods based on plant anatomy and morphology were supplemented with molecular barcoding (nuclear ITS, plastid trnL–trnF, rps4 and atpB–rbcL regions) of specimens that either did not fit existing morphological concepts perfectly or for which records were unexpected based on previously established phytogeographical patterns. Key results and conclusions. In total, we recorded ca 380 species of mosses and ca 150 species of liverworts from five localities on the northern slopes of the Khamar-Daban range. Such floristic richness indicates a hotspot of bryophyte diversity with a remarkably high proportion of suboceanic species, such as Brachydontium trichodes (F.Weber) Milde, Herzogiella striatella (Brid.) Z.Iwats. and Racomitrium macounii subsp. alpinum (E.Lawton) Frisvoll. Nearly 20% of specimens were identified or checked using DNA barcoding. This approach showed the presence of previously unrecorded species in a number of genera, including Didymodon, Neckera and Pseudohygrohypnum.

The liverwort and hornwort flora of the Korean Peninsula possesses some unique traits arising from the geographic position of the Peninsula, where the mainland flora meets insular flora. This flora is still not exhaustively studied, due not only to political reasons, but also because much less attention has been paid than to adjacent lands by hepaticologists. A checklist presented is based on a study of ca. 15,500 specimens collected by the authors and a review of relevant literature. This study provides the checklist of liverworts and hornworts known from Korea and the geographical distribution of each species within the peninsula. The liverworts and hornworts in Korean flora include 346 taxa (326 species, 16 subspecies and four varieties) in 112 genera and 50 families. Since 2007, 75 taxa of liverworts and four taxa of hornworts are reported as new to the Korean Peninsula, with a number of the new records arising following application of new taxonomic concepts that have become apparent over the last few decades. While compiling the checklist, 42 species, previously reported to Korea, are excluded from the Korean liverwort flora.
... The studied plants are quite consistent with the description of the species (Bakalin & Vilnet, 2012;Bakalin, 2014), with the exception of the color of the ventral side of shoots, that is rather brown. They have 1) the color of leaves, which are light green, but partially with a peculiar red-colored border; 2) red colored perianth mouth, 3) marginal leaf cells that are equal to midleaf cells. ...
... Distribution. The distribution of the species is described by Bakalin (2014) as Boreal East Asian (circum-Okhotian endemic) where it " almost everywhere vicariously replaces Solenostoma sphaerocarpum". The present record suggests that most likely Solenostoma rossicum is a circumpolar arctic-montane species, which is either omitted from collections due to its very small size and often occurring as single shoots, or is identified as Solenostoma sphaerocarpum or S. confertissimum. ...
... The records of Plectocolea hyalina for Chungcheongbuk-do, Gyeonggi-do, and Gangwon-do (Yamada and Choe, 1997) may be based on misidentification of Metasolenostoma ochotense. Our previous record of Plectocolea hyalina for Namchae Island (Bakalin, 2014a) also belongs to the latter taxon. Metasolenostoma ochotense differs from Plectocolea hyalina in a pellucid (versus dull) appearance, short perigynium (less that 1/2 of perianth length versus longer than 1/2), generally typical 'solenostomoid' keeled and beaked perianth composed by subisodiametric to shortly oblong cells (versus cells twice as long as wide in P. hyalina). ...

Three taxa of Scapania with Sino-Himalayan and meta-Himalayan distribution are described as new to science: S. pseudojavanica from the southern portion of the eastern spur of the Tibetan Plateau in southern China and North Vietnam, S. metahimalayana with a disjunct distribution that ranges from Nepal (where its distribution is questionable) to North Vietnam, and S. sichuanica from high elevation in Sichuan in SW China. Each species is morphologically similar to taxa distributed in the more humid and warmer climates of East and South-East amphi-oceanic Asia. The differentiation is presumably the result of recent speciation in the Sino-Himalayas and adjacent lands and the observed differentiation and distribution patterns are in support of the geographic approach in splitting hepatic species. The initial differentiation of these Scapania in sect. Stephania was the specialization into two groups: with brown and colorless gemmae, both being predominantly unicellular.
