Information on the record of Phyllactinia moricola, a new in Ukraine alien powdery mildew fungus, is reported. The teleomorph of the fungus was collected in October–December 2020 on Morus alba in Odesa. The description and illustrations of the studied material are provided. The disease caused by this species can significantly reduce the ornamental properties of mulberry, a popular plant that is often used in greenery in the settlements of Ukraine. It is noted that the fungus can spread to Southern Europe, where it may cause significant damage to horticulture and silk production.

Two powdery mildews, Erysiphe syringae and the previously undescribed Phyllactinia syringae, sp. nov., occur on lilac in western North America. Phyllactinia syringae is found on common lilac, whereas E. syringae is found on Chinese lilac and, occasionally, common lilac. Infection by P. syringae is extremely unobtrusive until formation of a hypophyllous mycelial mat with chasmothecia in late fall. Infection by E. syringae in late summer is conspicuous, with its thick, superficial mycelial mat on the leaf upper surface detracting from the aesthetic appearance of the bush.

Fungi belonging to the family Erysiphaceae (Ascomycota) are obligate biotrophs causing powdery mildew disease on various host plants. Most of the species in this family are ectoparasitic while the genus Phyllactinia is known to be partly endoparasitic. Phyllactinia guttata is one of the most important powdery mildews among Phyllactinia species causing disease on deciduous trees. In this study, P. guttata was detected on 11 woody plant species belonging to 8 families of Actinidiaceae, Betulaceae, Cornaceae, Fagaceae, Moraceae, Rhamnaceae, Rosaceae and Ulmaceae in 5 provinces in the Black Sea Region of Turkey. This is the first report of P. guttata on Actinidia deliciosa, Alnus glutinosa var. barbata, A. glutinosa var. glutinosa, Cornus mas, Cydonia oblonga and Fagus orientalis in the Black Sea Region of Turkey.

Powdery mildew first appeared on mature 3-year-old bushes of ‘jellyfish tree’, Medusagyne oppositifolia (Medusagynaceae), grown from seed at Eden Project, Cornwall, England, in collaborative conservation work with the Seychelles Government. Initially, young leaves showed distortion and patches of mycelium bearing conidia. Later, light brown lesions developed and badly affected plants showed extensive leaf-drop, especially destructive in seedlings. This is the first report of powdery mildew on Medusagyne. Conidia are catenate, elliptical to doliiform, (19) 24–34(47AE5) · (13AE5) 15–18 lm with fibrosin bodies and a sinuous wrinkling pattern. Conidiophores erect with a long cylindrical straight or twisted foot-cell, 41–86AE5 (140) · (7) 9–14 (16) lm, arising towards one end of its hyphal mother cell, the lower septum occasionally raised up to 10 lm, followed by a generative cell and 2–5 maturing conidial units. Superficial hyphal cells, 25–105 · 4AE5–11AE5 lm, branched at right angles, bearing inconspicuous or slightly nipple-shaped appressoria. No chasmothecia were present, but characteristics are consistent with Oidium subgenus Fibroidium, the anamorph of Podosphaera. The short, broad germ tubes typical of the fibroidium type, brevitubus subtype narrowed the identification to Podosphaera section Sphaerotheca subsect. Magnicellulatae (Cook & Braun, 2009) with the morphology close to that of Podosphaera (syn. Sphaerotheca) fusca, apparently a ubiquitous species with a broad host range.

White powdery masses were observed on leaves of Lactuca tuberosa in southwestern Iran. Infected leaves were examined using a stereomicroscope and microscopic slides of fungal structures prepared in lactic acid 25%. Based on morphological characteristics of conidia, appressoria and foot cell of conidiophores, the fungus was identified as Golovinomyces bolayi. The fungus is an important pathogen causing powdery mildew disease and occurs on various Lactuca species. G. bolayi separated from G. orontii species complex and distinguished from other closely related species by having catenate conidia as well as nipple-shaped appressoria and sinuous-curved foot cell of conidiophores.

A comprehensive review of the species, host ranges and geographical distribution of powdery mildew fungi in Iran is presented. The listed fungi belong to eight teleomorphic genera, viz. Blumeria (one species), Erysiphe sect. Erysiphe (14 species), E. sect. Microsphaera (15 species), E. sect. Uncinula (six species), Golovinomyces (nine species), Leveillula (14 species), Neoerysiphe (two species), Phyllactinia (seven species), Podosphaera sect. Podosphaera (three species), P. sect. Sphaerotheca (12 species), and Sawadaea (two species); and one anamorphic genus, Oidium (five species). The 528 host plant species reported in the checklist pertain to 287 genera.
