A powdery mildew was found on Leontopodium leontopodioides (Asteraceae) in China. Phylogenetic analyses using a combination of internal transcribed spacer and 28S rDNA sequences showed that this species, which clusters as sister to Neoerysiphe joerstadii, is allied to N. galii, N. geranii, and N. nevoi. This species differs from the closely allied N. joerstadii in the number and size of asci (3–10 asci, 55–75 × 20–40 μm versus 16–32 asci, 40–60 × 20–30 μm). This species is morphologically very similar to N. gnaphalii, but clearly differs from this species in having larger chasmothecia and colorless appendages. Therefore, the powdery mildew on L. leontopodioides is described as N. leontopodii sp. nov.

Fungi play a critical role in plant pathology, and impacts human economy and food security. This study focuses on compiling a checklist of phytopathogenic fungi and their plant hosts reported from Sikkim, India and examines the association between those fungi and plant hosts through Cramer's V test and dplyr based data mining in R program with aim to aid in disease management. The study compiled a checklist of 90 phytopathogenic fungal species under 23 orders, 38 families and 60 genera and 82 species of plant hosts under 38 families and 68 genera and found significant affinities (p < 0.05) between fungal taxa and host families. However, associations between fungal taxa with host species was not significant. Jaccard Index of Similarity showed preference towards host family was most common (0.11) between Ascomycota and Basidiomycota, while preference towards host genus was least common (0.00) between Basidiomycota and Oomycota. The study emphasizes the potential of data mining as a tool for identifying patterns of association between phytopathogenic fungi and their plant hosts, identifying alternative hosts, and the significance of phytopathogenic fungi as a source of bioactive compounds like antibiotics and enzymes, as well as their potential to produce mycotoxins and allergenic contaminants that pose a threat to human health. The study suggests further evaluation of the role of endophytes and saprophytes (facultative parasites) in disease development, documention of disease incidence locations, and identification of fungal phytopathogens at the strain, pathotype, or forma specialis level towards effective disease monitoring and management.

The second contribution to a new series devoted to the phylogeny and taxonomy of powdery mildews is presented. An overview of Neoerysiphe species is given, including references to ex-type sequences or, if unavailable, representative reference sequences for phylogenetic-taxonomic purposes are provided. The new species N. stachydis is described, and Striatoidium jaborosae is reduced to synonymy with Neoerysiphe macquii. Epitypes with ex-epitype sequences are designated for Alphitomorpha ballotae, A. labiatarum, Erysiphe galii, E. chelones, and E. galeopsidis. Based on phylogenetic analyses, it has been demonstrated that Neoerysiphe cumminsiana is confined to its type host, Roldana hartwegii (= Senecio seemannii), and other North and South American parasites on Asteraceae hosts, previously assigned to this species, pertain to N. macquii. The first record of N. macquii from Europe (Germany) on cultivated Bidens aurea was confirmed by sequencing. Sequence analysis of type material of N. rubiae reveals that this species should be excluded from Neoerysiphe; however, the true affinity of this taxon is not yet clear.

Bauhinia species are popular ornamental and medicinal plants with a pantropical distribution. In December 2016, powdery mildew symptoms were found on B. blakeana and B. purpurea in Guangdong, China. Based on ITS and 28S rDNA sequences, as well as morphological characters, the powdery mildew was identified as Erysiphe lespedezae. Previous records of powdery mildews on Bauhinia spp. are discussed. Based on morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses of type material, Pseudoidium caesalpiniacearum is reduced to synonymy with E. lespedezae. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of E. lespedezae causing powdery mildew on B. purpurea in China, and B. blakeana as a new host. A detailed morphological description and molecular data are provided herein.

The newly recognised powdery mildew species Phyllactinia takamatsui on Cotoneaster nummularius (Rosaceae) is described and illustrated. This species, collected in Kerman Province, Iran, is well characterised by its conidial morphology and rDNA ITS sequences clearly different from allied species. Conidia are broadly ellipsoid to subcylindrical, i.e. they are not clavate-spathuliform as in most Phyllactinia species. The rDNA ITS sequence analysis showed that this species is closely allied to other species described on hosts belonging to Rosaceae, such as Ph. mali and Ph. pyri-serotinae. The ITS sequence of P. takamatsui was 92 to 94 % similar to that of the closest known relatives. During the collection of tropical powdery mildews in Cibodas Botanical Garden and Mount Tangkuban Perahu in Indonesia, we found interesting specimens on Castanopsis javanica (Fagaceae). Phylogenetic analysis using a combination of 28S and ITS rDNA sequences clearly showed that this fungus forms a distinct lineage among the Erysiphe species found on hosts of the plant genus Castanopsis. Therefore, we consider this fungus a new species of Erysiphe, described here as Erysiphe javanica. Differences between E. javanica and closely related Erysiphe species are discussed.

Four new powdery mildew species belonging to tribe Phyllactinieae are described, illustrated, and discussed. These include Phyllactinia erythrinae-americanae based on Mexican material on Erythrina americana, P. robiniae occurring in North America on Robinia neomexicana and R. pseudoacacia, Ovulariopsis erythrinae-abyssinicae on Erythrina abyssinica in Zambia, and O. leucaenae on Leucaena latisiliqua in Honduras and Mexico. The South African Phyllactinia erythrinae is redescribed based on an examination of type material. Host ranges, distributions and the affinities of these new taxa to other species of Phyllactinia and Ovulariopsis on legumes, including Phyllactinia fraxini on Wisteria sinensis in Europe, are discussed, and a key to the species concerned is provided.

In the arboretum of Universidad Nacional de Colombia sede Medellín, Cassia fistula (Golden Shower Tree) and Leucaena leucocephala (Leucaena), exhibited early defoliation. Erysiphe quercicola and Telimena canafistulae, associated with powdery mildew and tar spot, respectively, on C. fistula, were identified using morphological and molecular techniques, both representing new records of fungi for Colombia. Similarly, Phyllactinia leucaenae was proposed as a new combination for Ovulariopsis leucaenae and was associated with powdery mildew on L. leucocephala, which to the best of our knowledge is another new record for Colombia.

Powdery mildews are obligate biotropic fungal parasites responsible for disease on a wide range of host plants. They are easily recognizable as white powdery growth on leaves, shoots and sometimes on flowers and even on fruits. This checklist of powdery mildew fungi of Himachal Pradesh, India is based on an exhaustive bibliographic survey of the literature. Fifteen genera (Blumeria, Erysiphe, Euoidium, Golovinomyces, Leveillula, Microsphaera, Neoerysiphe, Oidium, Oidopsis, Phyllactinia, Pleochaeta, Podosphaera, Pseudoidium, Sphaerotheca and Uncinula) and 92 species of powdery mildew have been recorded from the state. About 168 plant species belonging to 122 genera and 49 families are infected by these fungi. Molecular studies of powdery mildew fungi from Himachal Pradesh are needed to revise and to classify these fungi in their correct taxonomic position.
