Peniophora is an old corticioid genus, from which two small satellite genera, Dendrophora and Duportella, were derived based on morphological differences. Molecular systematic studies showed that they belong to Peniophoraceae, Russulales, but the inter- and intra-generic phylogenetic relationships are still unclear. Moreover, the species diversity...

Scedosporium species are usually soil saprophytes but some members of the genus such as S. apiospermum and S. aurantiacum have been regularly reported as causing human respiratory infections, particularly in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Because of their low sensitivity to almost all available antifungal drugs, a better understanding of the p...

... In contrast, uncommon fungi are underestimated regarding their biosynthetic capacities. As one of the oldest genera of corticoid fungi, the genus Peniophora adopted a wide distribution from boreal to tropical areas, and many unrelated species were described in the genus [1]. However, little is known about the production and the pharmaceutical impact of their secondary metabolites. ...

Two new cytochalasin derivatives, peniotrinins A (1) and B (2), three new citrinin derivatives, peniotrinins C–E (4, 5, 7), and one new tetramic acid derivative, peniotrinin F (12), along with nine structurally related known compounds, were isolated from the solid culture of Peniophora sp. SCSIO41203. Their structures, including the absolute configurations of their stereogenic carbons, were fully elucidated based on spectroscopic analysis, quantum chemical calculations, and the calculated ECD. Interestingly, 1 is the first example of a rare 6/5/5/5/6/13 hexacyclic cytochalasin. We screened the above compounds for their anti-prostate cancer activity and found that compound 3 had a significant anti-prostate cancer cell proliferation effect, while compounds 1 and 2 showed weak activity at 10 μM. We then confirmed that compound 3 exerts its anti-prostate cancer effect by inducing methuosis through transmission electron microscopy and cellular immunostaining, which suggested that compound 3 might be first reported as a potential anti-prostate methuosis inducer.

Scytinostroma is species-rich genus in Peniophoraceae, Russulales and has been shown to be polyphyletic. In this study, we performed phylogenetic analyses on the core clade of Scytinostroma based on concatenated ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-nrLSU sequence data. Fifteen lineages including four new species from China, Scytinostroma beijingensis , S. boidinii , S. subduriusculum , and S. subrenisporum , were recognized. The genus Michenera was nested within the Scytinostroma s.s. clade in the phylogenetic tree of Peniophoraceae. Sequences of S. portentosum (type species) and S. hemidichophyticum from Europe formed a strongly supported lineage sister to the S. portentosum sample from Canada. It is supposed that the European “ S. portentosum ” is S. hemidichophyticum , and the former species is restricted in distribution to North America. Scytinostroma duriusculum is supposed to be a species complex. Samples from Sri Lanka (the type locality) formed a lineage sister to those from China, Thailand and Vietnam (described herein as S. subduriusculum ) and two samples from France that might represent an undescribed species. The four new species are described and illustrated, and an identification key to all the 14 Scytinostroma s.s. species worldwide is provided. Until now, seven species of Scytinostroma s.s. have been found in China. Our results increased the knowledge of species diversity and taxonomy of corticioid fungi in China.

Heterobasidion annosum is one of the most aggressive pathogens of Pinus forests in Europe, causing considerable economic losses. To detect H. annosum for disease diagnosis and control, we developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) reaction with a primer set designed from the glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) DNA sequences of H. annosum. In our study, this LAMP assay was found to be capable of efficiently amplifying the target gene within 60 min at 63°C. In specificity tests, H. annosum was positively detected, and other species were negative. The detection limit of this assay was found to be 100 pg·μL⁻¹, and the assay was also successfully tested for use with basidiospore suspensions and wood samples. This study provides a rapid method for diagnosing root and butt rot caused by H. annosum, which will be of use in port surveillance of logs imported from Europe.
