Consumers are more disposed towards paying price premiums for sustainable food products. This fact is especially important for products with a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) label, such as the high-acidity apple cultivar ‘Reinette du Canada’. However, ‘Reinette du Canada’ apple fruit is affected by two of the main post-harvest disorders in apple cultivars, bitter pit and senescent breakdown. As a means to achieve sustainable production of this high-quality apple cultivar, the effect of a sustainable preharvest technique, summer pruning, in combination with a zero-residue postharvest treatment allowed in organic farming on calcium-related disorders and quality in global terms in this PDO-labelled apple cultivar was assessed during storage. The combination of the two sustainable practices was an effective tool in diminishing senescent breakdown from 43% to 17% and to decrease bitter pit incidence by up to 21% (from 36% to 15%) throughout storage, especially in fruit with high susceptibility to this disorder during storage. Moreover, the overall acceptability was kept high (values of more than 3 on a 5-point scale) when applying this environment-friendly sustainable horticulture practice, which will not only reduce the synthetic pesticide input in the apple agroecosystem, but also contribute to producing fruit with zero residues.

Стаття присвячена проблемі публікації результатів досліджень українських вчених-садівників в англомовних журналах, що індексуються в базі даних Scopus. Сьогодні, такі публікації є невід’ємною складовою успіху науково-педагогічного працівника, необхідні для присвоєння вчених звань та наукових ступенів. При цьому, в українському науковому просторі процес публікації в рецензованих закордонних журналах часто оточений негативом та неправдивою інформацією щодо його складності та високої вартості. Саме тому, метою даної статті є підвищення наукової грамотності українських науковців-садівників, в особливості молодих вчених, та їх стимулювання до публікації англомовних наукових статей шляхом наочного висвітлення процесів добору журналу для подачі, підготовки рукопису та процесу рецензування. Розглянуто процес пошуку журналу для публікації з урахуванням відповідності тематики проведених досліджень напряму журналу. Розглянуто основні типи наукових журналів за типом доступу до статей, наведено орієнтовний перелік видань, в яких можлива публікація результатів українських досліджень в галузі садівництва. Підкреслено недоліки публікації у недоброчесних (так званих «хижих») журналах, надано поради, як їх розпізнати до подання рукопису статті. Покроково наведено нюанси підготовки рукопису для подачі у журнал, що індексуються Scopus. Головні відмінності, порівняно з фаховими науковими виданнями України, полягають у написанні розділу «Матеріали і методи», який в закордонних виданнях описується ширше, а також у описі результатів досліджень та їх обговорення, адже в більшості закордонних журналів це – два окремих розділи. Вказано вимоги світової наукової спільноти до формування складу авторів публікації, надано поради щодо перекладу рукопису статті на англійську мову. Висвітлено типовий процес рецензування рукописів в журналах, що індексуються Scopus, надано поради щодо роботи з редакційною колегією та рецензентами для пришвидшення процесу публікації та покращення якості статті. В цілому, дана стаття була підготовлена зі сподіванням, що вона полегшить українським вченим обмін науковою інформацією та буде сприяти подальшій інтеграції української науки у світову.

The research project has developed and justified the storage modes of apples in a modified gas environment by creating an isolated "closed loop" of high-pressure polyethylene; the expediency of creating highly efficient technologies for storing fresh fruits in a controlled atmosphere, in bioactive bactericidal packages and by creating microfilm on the surface of fruits has been confirmed. The prospects of using a progressive method of storing fruits in a modified gas atmosphere by creating an isolated "closed circuit" in a separate refrigerating chamber without using expensive equipment (in normal and subnormal gas environments) are proved. New technologies have been developed for storing apple fruits susceptible to infectious and physiological diseases based on improved storage methods with minimal losses. The consumption rates of Phytosporin-M for the surface treatment of fruits were determined and optimized to control the intensity of biochemical and microbiological processes during storage. The modes and technologies of post-harvest fruit processing with the Phytosporin-M biopreparation have been substantiated.

Japanese quince (JQ) show climacteric behavior, that is respiration takes place during ripening. Phytochemical processes during fruit storage cause changes in quality, thus relevant storage conditions are to be identified to sustain fruit quality over the storage time. The present work aimed to evaluate the effect of 1‐MCP treatment and controlled atmosphere (CA) storage on the quality of JQ fruit. Two experiments during the 2017 and 2018 seasons were carried out with four JQ cultivars. Better maintenance of fresh weight was observed in the case of CA storage, though, the degree of effectiveness was cultivar and growing season dependent. The best preservation of JQ fruit phytochemicals, e.g., total phenolics, proanthocyanidins, and vitamin C has been reached when the CA system was employed. In turn, no clear effect of either CA or 1‐MCP on fruit soluble solids and total acids content was observed for JQ fruit after long‐term storage.
