... results for satellite cells and myonuclei are presented in Table 3. Pooled data revealed a 27% increase in the number of NCAM-positive cells per fiber over the training period when compared with pre-training values (Po0.05). The increase was sig- nificant for both males and females (Fig. 2). NCAM- positive cell number as expressed relative to the total number of nuclei increased in males only. Analysis of the relative changes in this variable using the Krus- kal-Wallis test revealed a trend toward a larger change in male subjects compared with female sub- jects (P 5 0.095). There was no relationship between age and, ...

Background Although muscle regenerative capacity declines with age, the extent to which this is due to satellite cell-intrinsic changes vs. environmental changes has been controversial. The majority of aging studies have investigated hindlimb locomotory muscles, principally the tibialis anterior, in caged sedentary mice, where those muscles are abn...

Stress urinary incontinence is a significant social, medical, and economic problem. It is caused, at least in part, by degeneration of the sphincter muscle controlling the tightness of the urinary bladder. This muscular degeneration is characterized by a loss of muscle cells and a surplus of a fibrous connective tissue. In Western countries approxi...

The relative contribution of the MAP kinase phosphatases (MKPs) in the integration of MAP kinase-dependent signaling during regenerative myogenesis has yet to be fully investigated. MKP-1 and MKP-5 maintain skeletal muscle homeostasis by providing positive and negative effects on regenerative myogenesis, respectively. In order to define the hierarc...

Apoptosis occurs in normal tissues and in many pathological conditions, and is regulated by a variety of genes. In this work, we used electron microscopy and the comet assay to study the morphological and biochemical (DNA cleavage) changes associated with apoptosis in long-term denervated rat skeletal muscle. Male Wistar rats were anesthetized with...

Sarcopenia is defined as the loss of muscle mass and function with age and is associated with decline in mobility, frailty, falls and mortality. There is considerable interest in understanding the underlying mechanisms. Our aim was to characterise muscle morphology changes associated with sarcopenia among community dwelling older men. METHODS: One...
