The drill end effector is a key sub-system to flexible robotic drilling system, which performance will have an effect on drilling quality and efficiency. As a highly-integrated small electro-mechanical system, the design of drill end effector should be based on the robot and the process. The effect of the stiffness, the payload and the accuracy of...

Greeting gestures are one of the most important aspects of social robot behavior design. Existing research has shown different greeting gesture design methods for social robots when they interact with humans. However, cultural difference, which is an important factor between human greetings, is less explored for robot greeting gesture design. In th...

Considering the constantly increasing demand for aircraft products, the development of automatic drilling-riveting machine tool systems is discussed in this paper. A structural conceptual design method considering both efficiency and quality is proposed. Particularly, a drilling-riveting machine tool system including single-column machine tool, light-weight end-effector, and assisting fixture system is built. The positioning error coordinates variation model is analyzed, and the ranges of reasonable processing parameters are determined. An experiment is conducted on the developed system to show satisfactory drilling-riveting quality and efficiency: compared with the position error of other similar systems, the position error with 0.082 mm is reduced by 41.42%, and the accuracy of aperture reaches H8, the rivets head height error ≤0.8 mm, and drilling and riveting efficiency can reach 6/min and 8/min.

In the assembly of aircraft fuselages, manual hole drilling is conducted in some cases instead of applying robotic drilling due to the issues of burr formation and vibration. In manual operation, tool feeding is realized by applying force to the tool. A prototype system was developed in which a load is applied from the upper side of the spindle by a weight to move a spindle in a vertical downward (CLF method). Drilling in aluminum using this system did not lead to crown-shaped burr formation or irregular vibrations which are often problems in robotic machining. The level of the load applied to the tool becomes an important parameter in the CLF method. To minimize the damage generation, it may be important to adjust the load to the minimum level required for cutting and tool feed. Given such a tool feed system, a drilling unit could be composed from general purpose units such as a shaft and bushing combination. Robotic machining with this type of drilling unit is expected to lead to significant labor savings and improved machining accuracy in machining that is currently conducted manually.

The article describes the technological features of the formation of holes with the help of the created robotic technological complex based on a Kuka robot. The robotic complex for machining allows you to drill holes in the Helmholtz resonators to absorb noise in shells made of polymer composite materials (GFRP and CFRP) of aircraft engines. Holes for noise absorption with a diameter of 1.6–2 mm are required to be shaped in a significant array; 200-300 thousand holes must be drilled on one shell. The technological problems arising from the robotic drilling process are noted. One of the problems is the deviation from the cylindricity of the formed holes, the deviation arises due to the kinematics of the robot. A technical solution to this problem is proposed.
