High-performance blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are developed. A concept of using multiple-emissive layer (EML) configuration is adopted. In this letter, bis(2-methyl-8-quinolinolate)-4-(phenylphenolato)Al (BAlq) and 9,10-di(naphtha-2-yl)anthracene (ADN), which serve n- and p-type EMLs, respectively, are used to evaluate and demonstrate...

CdS nanocrystals are synthesized by wet chemical deposition technique without using any capping agent. Next a hybrid optoelectronic structure is presented, where a monolayer of CdS quantum dots is sandwiched between PEDOT: PSS and MEHPPV organic layers. The cells that were doped with CdS quantum dots and undoped ones were compared for performance t...

An increasing amount of sewage has been discharged into water bodies in the progression of industrialization and urbanization, causing serious water pollution. Meanwhile, the increase of nutrients in the water induces water eutrophication and rapid growth of algae. Photocatalysis is a common technique for algal inhibition and sterilization. To improve the utilization of visible light and the conversion efficiency of solar energy, more organic photocatalytic materials have been gradually developed. In addition to ultraviolet light, partial infrared light and visible light could also be used by organic photocatalysts compared with inorganic photocatalysts. Simultaneously, organic photocatalysts also exhibit favorable stability. Most organic photocatalysts can maintain a high degradation rate for algae and bacteria after several cycles. There are various organic semiconductors, mainly including small organic molecules, such as perylene diimide (PDI), porphyrin (TCPP), and new carbon materials (fullerene (C60), graphene (GO), and carbon nanotubes (CNT)), and large organic polymers, such as graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4), polypyrrole (PPy), polythiophene (PTH), polyaniline (PANI), and polyimide (PI). In this review, the classification and synthesis methods of organic photocatalytic materials were elucidated. It was demonstrated that the full visible spectral response (400–750 nm) could be stimulated by modifying organic photocatalysts. Moreover, some problems were summarized based on the research status related to algae and bacteria, and corresponding suggestions were also provided for the development of organic photocatalytic materials.

Industrial fabrication of Mn-doped CdS/ZnS core/shell nanocrystals (NCs) was conducted using a one-pot method, and the NCs’ fluorescence peak could be varied from 564 to 616 nm by changing the Mn²⁺ doping process and ZnS shell thickness. The synthesis parameters were optimized to increase the NCs’ output, and ~10 g of NCs could be yielded in 1.5 L of solution. A reverse microemulsion method was used to encapsulate these CdS:Mn/ZnS NCs with SiO2 aerosols to improve their photostability in white-light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). A yield of ~3 × 10⁶ 1 W WLEDs was obtained by enveloping blue chips with CdS:Mn/ZnS@SiO2 NCs and YAG:Ce³⁺ is helpful to industrialization; the WLEDs’ color rendering index and luminous efficiency were 88 and 108 lm/W, respectively.

In this Letter, blue phosphorescence organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) employ structures for electron and/or hole confinement; 1,3,5-tris(N-phenylbenzimiazole-2-yl)benzene is used as a hole confinement layer and tris-(phenylpyrazole)iridium [Ir(ppz)3] is utilized for an electron confinement layer (ECL). The electrical and optical properties of the fabricated blue PHOLEDs with various carrier-confinement structures are analyzed. Structures with a large energy offset between the carrier confinement and emitting layers enhance the charge-carrier balance in the emitting region, resulting from the effective carrier confinement. The maximum external quantum efficiency of the blue PHOLEDs with the double-ECLs is 24.02% at 1500 cd/m2 and its luminous efficiency is 43.76 cd/A, which is 70.47% improved compared to the device without a carrier-confinement layer.

Two kinds of novel blue-emitting materials, anthracene-based derivatives, are synthesized by the Suzuki coupling reaction. It is worth noting that the maximum emission wavelengths of the two materials are 441 and 444 nm in tetrahydrofuran and 456 and 454 nm in film states, which are the typical blue fluorescence and the fluorescence quantum yields of them are 0.87 and 1.12 by using 9,10-diphenylanthracene (Φf=0.90) as a calibration standard. The full width at half maximum of them are 56, 55 nm in solution, respectively, presenting good color purity. Both of them display superior thermal properties and electrochemical properties. Scanning electronic microscope results show that the films of two compounds are continuous, compact, and smooth after 100°C for 3 h. These data indicate their potential to be prepared for high efficiency and long operation lifetime organic light-emitting diodes devices.
