An implementation plan for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by the implementing agency UNESCO, launched in 2005 to build partnerships with various partners mainly aimed to reflect the great diversity of interests, concerns, and challenges for ESD. Embedded in this UN program is the challenge to academic engineering programs to develop a technical workforce which is capable of designing and continually developing sustainable processes and products. ESD therefore requires engineers to be able to learn and perform in an interdisciplinary work environment as critical thinkers and problem solvers, to be value-driven and to practice participatory and transparent decision making. Taking these challenges back into curriculum development, the authors of this paper propose that their Lean Engineering Education (LEE) initiative be examined and scrutinized as a contribution to ESD. Thus, this paper reviews ESD roots and partnerships and, then, present, succinctly, LEE as a curricular innovation for engineering courses that promotes the behavior intended for future engineers, to foster a ESD and the Sustainable Development thinking.

This article has presents an extensive survey of the state of the art in Green IT/S. The findings of the survey suggest that there is scope for a reliable carbon footprint auditing tool for organisational ICT usage. A prototype auditing tool is developed and a trial audit carried out and evaluated. Conclusions include the need for automation of the audit, the need for consistent management of hardware within organisations, and the need to present carbon footprint data in a format that respects the privacy of the individual user, but allows meaningful conclusions to be drawn. LCM literature is mainly of a normative character and LCM is typically defined by holistic environmental focus, internal integration, collaboration with external actors and carried out with an abundant LCM-based toolbox. To contrast, a study of LCM in practice shows here how LCM is enacted by linking environmental initiatives attached to different steps of a generic product chain. It also shows how practitioners struggle with processes of internal integration and external collaboration.

This paper aims to explore how Strategic Planning (SP) and Life Cycle Management (LCM) can be worked together, since both have similar concepts but they are not seen in an integrated way. A systematic literature review was carried out to identify researches that bring the integration of LCM and SP, and then SP activities and LCM practices were included in a relationship matrix to analyze where integration opportunities can be find. The results show that academic literature which brings business SP and LCM concepts together is still far away from maturity and new approaches need to be developed. This paper also brings a discussion about how LCM could be included into SP activities.
