... the conceptual system, like other grand-level theories, is too broad and abstract to be directly tested, it pro- vides the basis for development of middle-range theories that can be directly tested. The development of middle-range the- ories by other nurse scholars is presented in Table 2. The in- crease in middle-range theory development in the past decade represents a major extension of King's work. ...

King’in Amaca Ulaşma Kuramı, hemşirelik bakımında hastaların karar vermedeki işbirlikçi rolünü ve onları güçlendirmenin önemini vurgular.

... Imogen King assumed that human beings are open system in constant interaction with the environment, that nursing focus in human being interacting with their environment and that nursing"s goal is to help individuals and groups to maintain health. (8) It is based on the concepts of personal, interpersonal and social systems including perception, judgment, action, reaction, interaction and transaction.. Further, the conclusion drawn on the basis of the findings of the study includes: 1. Knowledge of staff nurses regarding door to balloon care of patient with myocardial infarction during pretest was average and is increased as good after teaching program. 2. Structured teaching program was effective to enhance knowledge of staff nurses regarding door to balloon care of patient with myocardial infarction 3. ...

Introduction.Door-to-balloon time is a key performance quality metric in the treatment of heart attacks.American heart association AHA guidelines recommend a door-to-balloon (D2B) interval of no more than 90 minutes. Staff nurses as a first responder in emergency should have adequate knowledge about D2B and have potential to achieve the management goal within this time frame. Methodology: This is a pre experimental one group pre test-post test design, With 50 samples of subjects, conducted in a selected hospital, Bangalore Target population for the present study was staff nurses, participants were selected by non-probability purposive sampling technique. The structured self administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Result: The mean post-test knowledge scores was found higher [mean=19.56, SD of 3.18] when compared with pre-test mean knowledge score value which was 13.54with SD of 3.61. In pre test 74% respondents had average knowledge, 18% had poor knowledge and 8% had good knowledge. In post-test 58% of respondents had average knowledge and 42% had good knowledge regarding door to balloon care of patient with myocardial infarction.
... Its historical development has been well documented and has included influences from other disciplines and scholars. There has been ample literature support for the use of the grand theory in both knowledge building and as a springboard for the development of middle range theories (Frey, Sieloff, & Norris, 2002), thus, supporting its importance. The theory addresses all four metaparadigms of nursing: (a) nursing, (b) person, (c) environment, and (d) health (Sieloff-Evans, 1991). ...
... Some actions will occur after the interaction between patient and nurse. Whether an action is goal-oriented, aligned with improved outcomes, or signals a retreat into past patterns of health behavior may depend on this interaction (Frey et al., 2002). In the case of listening, patients perceive whether they are heard. ...
Thesis
Objective: The purpose of this qualitative research study was to ascertain which nurse behaviors a subsection of adults (those ≥50 years who had had a recent inpatient admission) believed conveyed nurse listening. Background: Listening (by nurses and doctors) has been identified as the factor with the greatest impact on patients’ overall rating of their hospital experience. Yet, which nurse behaviors lead to patients’ perceptions that listening has occurred was unexamined, hampering attempts at improvement. Methods: Due to lack of literature support, a qualitative study using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was undertaken to elicit a rich description of patients’ lived experiences related to nurse listening behaviors. Results: Study participants provided specific behaviors, both verbal and non-verbal, that led them to believe the nurse was either listening or not. These perceptions affected their sense of safety and ability to trust. Conclusions: Embracing these described behaviors could significantly impact patients’ safety and recovery.
... Second, despite the number of publications, the credibility of King's conceptual system and the validity of the theory of goal attainment are still not fully proven. Frey, Sieloff, and Norris (2002) describe both the conceptual system and the goal attainment theory as "application exercises," not actual nursing encounters. They note, "Application exercises cannot document the process of care or patient outcomes that are essential to complete the reciprocal link between practice and nursing theory" (p. ...

In healthcare, workplace relationships play a significant role in organizational commitment, work engagement, well-being, and teamwork and— ultimately—in organization success. Studies show caring and considering employee needs can be associated with a high degree of loyalty, motivation, and commitment toward the organization. Nurses in the acute care setting are the foundation of organizations that provide patient care and interact with patients, family members, peers, and managers. The nurse-manager relationship may influence organizational commitment, work engagement, and patient satisfaction.
... Some of these theoretical models have been applied although not in the pharmacy practice setting. Frey et al. summarized the practice and research carried out using the TGA [49], and the IEMMC was applied in a study where a patient education leaflet was used to assess how it influenced the performance of the patient and the doctor-patient interaction [50]. ...

Objective: To identify health care professional-patient relationship theoretical models and individual factors that may have an influence on this relationship and be relevant to community pharmacy practice. Methods: Using the recommended methodology by Prisma Statement, a search was undertaken in PubMed for health care professional-patient relationship theoretical models that included individual factors. Results: Eight theoretical models met the inclusion criteria. These models were classified based on their aim, their focus on the interaction process, external factors influencing the process, and their practical applications. The most common influential modifiable factors were knowledge, needs, values, expectations, beliefs and perceptions. Conclusion: 'The Theory of Goal Attainment' (TGA) appears to be the most useful model for community pharmacy practice. The perceptions and expectations of both patients and pharmacists could be the two most interesting modifiable factors to apply in pharmacy practice. These modifiable influential factors could be altered by specific training such as behavioral aspects. Practice implications: No theoretical model has been specifically developed for analyzing the community pharmacist-patient relationship. TGA may be appropriate for community pharmacy practice, since it takes into consideration both, attaining patients health outcomes, as well as improving patient-pharmacist relationship.

King's conceptual system and theory of goal attainment provide a systematic approach to the thought and action of nursing that has stood the test of time with continuing utility for organizing the complex factors of healthcare. Following a brief overview of the conceptual system and theory of goal attainment, application to family healthcare is discussed and illustrated with the programs of research of three exemplar King scholars: family healthcare with a mentally-ill child, family healthcare with children with type 1 diabetes or asthma, and family healthcare when a family member has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The scientific benefit and developmental progression of a theory-driven program of research for practice is noted. Future studies are presented as well as additional sources for King's conceptual system and theory of goal attainment.
... King's theory has been used by nurses, administrators, and other healthcare providers in more than 13 countries. 11 As one can see, this theory has depth and scope beyond bedside nursing. The theory has also been used with nursing administration 12,13 and to guide nursing curricula. ...
... Specific models such as the Wicks family health model 15 and the Advance directive decision making model 16 have been derived from it to guide nursing practice. 11 The theory has helped develop research instruments and facilitated other middle-range theories such as the Theory of Group Power. 12 Use of the theory of goal attainment to foster interdisciplinary collaboration with the intended outcome of improved patient and nursing outcomes is presented. ...

Interdisciplinary collaboration has the capacity to affect both healthcare providers and patients. Research has shown that the lack of communication and collaboration may be responsible for as much as 70% of the adverse events currently reported. The purpose of this article is 2-fold: to examine factors that may influence interdisciplinary collaboration and consequently patient outcomes and to examine the relationship between interdisciplinary collaboration and King's theory of goal attainment as a theory to support the phenomenon of interdisciplinary collaboration.
... When effective transactions occur between nurses and clients, goals are attained. However, deciding patient treatment without patient or caregiver collaboration is antithetical to Kings Transaction concept and is cited as possibly leading to discontent with care (Frey, Sieloff, & Norris, 2002;George, 1995). Huckstadt (2002) found that patients generally had more positive than negative perceptions of care during her interviews of eight geriatric adults receiving inpatient care. ...
... Regardless of these factors, each person listed multiple occasions of nurses disregarding the elders' basic needs. Because the patients and caregivers in these instances were capable of communication, the nurse-patient transaction could have resulted in patient goal attainment (Frey, Sieloff, & Norris, 2002). It is important to address factors, according to geriatric patients, that may be causing the poor communication and how to change them. ...
... King theorizes that role expectations and role performance, as perceived by nurse and client, must be congruent for transaction to occur and goals, in this case understanding, to be attained (Frey, Sieloff, & Norris, 2002). Additionally, perceptual accuracy plays a part in goal attainment. ...

Ethicolegal issues are those that involve ethical and legal considerations when one is deciding on a course of action. They include topics in advance directives, basic human needs, general nursing care, and health care decision-making. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perspectives of elders regarding geriatric care. Seniors ages 65 and older were interviewed using the Seniors Perspectives Regarding Elder Care Issues (SPRECI) questionnaire to obtain qualitative responses. Eight open-ended questions developed by the investigator comprised the SPRECI. The questionnaire was reviewed for content validity by a CNS with cardiovascular and administrative experience, a faculty member with experience in geriatric nursing, a faculty member with experience in ethicolegal issues, and another with experience in research methods. Emergent themes: (a) general nursing care, (b) basic needs, (c) advance directives, (d) decision making, and 5) understanding, intimate that elders commend hospitals for effectively providing for the geriatric patient, yet they identify deficits in trust, communication, and frustration with that care. The implication is that nurses should become more active in eliciting information from elders which accurately document their experiences in health care settings. This information is needed in order to address elders ethicolegal needs.
