... It contributes to the young persons' identity formation and the transition from total family dependency to the autonomy of adulthood. Due to the demanding curriculum and increased responsibilities, medical university might boost some features of adulthood (like commitment, responsibility) earlier than other institutions of tertiary education (Raikou & Konstantopoulou, 2021). Nevertheless, we suppose that medical students are especially at risk of quarter-life crisis. ...
... Our findings contribute to the 'university as a social context' concept (Raikou & Konstantopoulou, 2021) according to which university affects the prolonged identity formation and development of independency we call emerging adulthood, and its possible consequence, quarter-life crisis. Some variables relating to pre-school circumstances, students' attitude about medical school, studies and finally future career plans associated with medical students' quarter-life crisis. ...

Background: Quarter-life crisis is the anxiety and discomfort the young might experience at the end of their studies and at the beginning of their career. Objectives: Factors related to medical students’ quarter-life crisis were explored in this study. Methods: in the cross-sectional study, 351 medical students (74.6% female, mean of age: 23.79 years, SD: 1.53 years) filled in the online questionnaire that contained Quarter-life Crisis Questionnaire, International Personality Item Pool version of Big Five markers, and questions about different aspects of medical school. Independent t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and linear regression analysis were performed. Results: Women reported higher quarter-life crisis (t = –3.44, p = 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.42). Higher quarter-life crisis displayed among those students who did not apply to medical university right after high school (U = 2865.5, p = 0.03, Cohen’s d = 0.24). Students who would have not applied to medical school again (t = –7.93, p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.90); would have not encouraged their children to apply to medical school (U = 10414.5, p < 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.57); were uncertain to finish university (t = 6.68, p< 0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.74) showed higher quarter-life crisis. Students who failed at least one term for academic reason (U = 11809.5, p = 0.04, Cohen’s d = 0.23); did not feel to get proper knowledge to accomplish a medical job (t = –3.90, p <0.001, Cohen’s d = 0.54); were not satisfied with their grades (U = 11560.5, p = 0.01, Cohen’s d = 0.27) reported higher quarter-life crisis. Students who did not plan to work in a clinical field and patient care (t =–5.974, p = 0.00, Cohen’s d = 0.93); wanted to work abroad in the future (U = 12931.5, p = 0.00; Cohen’s d =0.27) had higher quarter-life crisis. Personality traits, such as extraversion (β = –0.20, p < 0.001), conscientiousness (β = –0.10, p = 0.01) were significant negative, neuroticism significant positive predictor of quarter-life crisis (β = 0.61, p < 0.001). Conclusion: The explored variables might be indicators of quarter-life crisis, and can be the basis of university counseling, when medical students’ quarter-life crisis and emerging adulthood is in focus.

The aim of this study is to examine how emerging adulthood is achieved in various foreign countries and in Greece as well as the relationship of emerging adulthood with University Pedagogy and the way that University Pedagogy facilitates the teaching methods of higher education teachers. This research was done with the method of systematic literature review. In particular, previous quantitative, qualitative and mixed research was presented on emerging adulthood and University Pedagogy, the relationship that develops between them and the way that University Pedagogy facilitates the teaching method of higher education teachers. According to the literature review, it seems that the emerging adulthood is influenced by the culture, religion and socioeconomic statuses of each country. In addition, it is found that University Pedagogy has several benefits for both students and teachers themselves. Finally, it is observed that the characteristics of emerging adulthood are highlighted more in the light of University Pedagogy.
... The members of this generation, in an effort to manage the crisis and the instability that prevails and causes them stress, constantly try to be informed and want to determine their own future. They are informed by the technological means to which they have access and are looking for solutions and for paths that concern their future (Raikou & Konstantopoulou 2021). In short, the characteristics of today's young generation, the Gen Z generation, are more complex than previous generations of young people in this age group. ...
... This is the age between 18-30 years old, when most young people are students, do not have a stable profession and many do not work at all, and are mainly financially supported by their parents. At this point it would be fair to mention that adulthood is determined by other criteria besides age, which are the acceptance of self-responsibility and the initiative of independent decisions, criteria that young people of this age have not yet realized that they have, since the views of their parents still influence them to a great extent (Raikou & Konstantopoulou, 2021). ...

The psychological and emotional impact of remote teaching due to the pandemic on students is the subject that was investigated in the present study. More specifically, our aim is to trace the emotions and psychological effects on students, one year after the start of the emergency remote teaching in universities. A qualitative research approach to address this topic was chosen, with the use of the semi-structured interview for data collection/production.The participants were thirty (30) students, men and women from various universities and departments throughout Greece, who had taken part in distance teaching and examination. The most important findings of the research were that the feelings of the students during the interruption of the educational function were mostly negative, including anxiety, insecurity and fear, while the general prevailing feelings of students during distance learning were mixed: sadness and tiredness, but also confidence, security and familiarity. Finally, the participants’ observations on distance examinations were also mentioned, giving a useful overview of the remote teaching and learning experience according to students, one year after.
... The university framework is characterized as an intermediate stage between the family and the wider social context. It contributes, in other words, to the transition from the full family dependency of adolescence to the autonomy of adulthood (Raikou & Konstantopoulou, 2021). ...
... The results of the above research reveal that those experiences during their studies had significant benefits for students, both in shaping their identity and in developing professional and social skills. At the same time, a survey on medical students outlined that the early inclusion of practical exercise during studies, meaning the development of students' professional roles from the beginning of their studies, enhances the responsibility of young adults (Raikou & Konstantopoulou, 2021). Accordingly, another survey on fighter pilots showed that student pilots feel adults in rates at least two times higher than their peers and this should be addressed, on the one hand, to the kind of education they have received and, on the other hand, the feeling of responsibility that is received from their new role (Kapogiannis, Karalis, & Raikou, 2021). ...
... Having the results of those studies in mind, and since we are talking about a period of shaping the identity of the young person, the question is whether the subject of study relates to differences in the dimensions of emerging adulthood (Raikou & Konstantopoulou, 2021). In this study, we are interested in exploring teacher students. ...

In this paper, we investigate the dimensions of emerging adulthood on teacher students and possible divergences to other disciplines. The research was conducted in 2020, with the participation of 206 students of the Department of Educational Sciences and Early Childhood Education at the University of Patras in Greece. The research tool was Arnett's IDEA questionnaire (Inventory of the Dimensions of Emerging Adulthood), adjusted by the researcher. The results confirmed the emerging adulthood characteristics of teacher students, nevertheless, interesting findings were also revealed. It seems that during their studies, teacher students progressively become more conscious, more realist, and more mature, meaning they move slowly towards adulthood.
