The marasmioid fungus Marasmius midnapurensis (Marasmiaceae, Basidiomycota) is described as a new species from India. Analysis of the internal transcribed spacer-1 region (ITS1) of the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene suggests that M. midnapurensis is phylogenetically distinct from closely related species and confirms its position within Marasmius sect....

Russula brunneoaurantiaca has a brownish orange pileus with a mucilaginous surface, sub‐decurrent lamellae that are white to pale orange, a white stipe that turns yellowish brown to brown when bruised, a strong, unpleasant smell, globose to subglobose basidiospores (5.0–9.0 5.0–7.8 m) with an inamyloid suprahilar spot and ornamentation of small isolated conical warts, fusiform hymenial cystidia on gill sides (62.5–82 × 7.5–12.5 μm) and lageniform to sub‐lageniform cystidia with filiform apex near the gill edge (80–113 × 7.5–10 μm), fusiform to spindle‐shaped pileocystidia, and habitat in association with Castanopsis sp. A complete morphological description, photographs, and molecular sequence‐based phylogenetic trees demarcating the position of the novel taxon are provided. Research Highlights Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and subsequent DNA analysis revealed a new species of the genus Russula . SEM analysis is an additional technique to describe the size and shape of its basidiospores as well as their ornamentation. Murinicarpus subadustus described from China is the only species of the genus Murinicarpus (Polyporales, Basidiomycota). There is no other report of this genus from any other country except China. Here, we report M. subadustus as a novelty to the macrofungal biota of India. This unique species is identified based on morphological features and nrDNA ITS-based phylogenetic analysis. A thorough macro- and microscopic characterisation along with field photographs, line drawings of microscopic structures and comparisons with morphologically and phylogenetically related taxa are provided.

Arko PF, Sudirman LI, Qayim I. 2021. Changes in landscape ecology between nature reserve and palm oil plantation in West Java, Indonesia based on the observations of macrofungal population. Biodiversitas 22: 4526-4537. As the biggest tropical country in Southeast Asia with the third-largest forest, Indonesia has limited data on macrofungal diversity. The limitation of the data is due to the lack of study on macrofungi in high biodiversity locations such as Dungus Iwul Nature Reserve (CADI). The purpose of this study was to determine and analyze the population of macrofungal species caused by the conversion in landscape structure (fragmentation and land-use change) that occurred in CADI patch and oil palm plantation of PT Perkebunan Nusantara VIII (PTPN) matrix, Cigelung, West Java. The sampling method used was opportunistic sampling assisted by line intercept. The macrofungal identification was based on morphological characters. The analysis of community ecology was performed in R programme. The results showed that macrofungal population and diversity in CADI were the highest, followed by PTPN planted in 2004 and planted in 2003, with a significant difference among the three study locations. The community dominance index shows the opposite, with the highest in PTPN 2003 and the lowest in CADI. These results showed changes in macrofungal population and diversity from the conversion in landscape structure. There were eleven indicator species in CADI, two species in PTPN 2003, and five species in PTPN 2004.

Marasmius cystidiatus sp. nov. is described from Kerala State, India based on both morphology and nrITS sequence-based molecular phylogeny. The phylogenetic tree inferred from maximum likelihood analysis showed M. cystidiatus nesting within the clade representing Marasmius section Globulares. Within this clade, M. cystidiatus formed a distinct lineage, sister to a cluster containing mostly members of the series Atrorubentes. A comprehensive description and photographs of both basidiocarps and microscopic structures of the new species are provided along with a comparison with morphologically close and phylogenetically related species.

Objectives: Oudemansiella canarii is an edible mushroom highly appreciated throughout the world due to its being a gastronomic delicacy. To date, no extensive work has been reported on the pharmacological or antioxidative aspects of this macrofungus. The present study focuses on the micromorphological features, confirmation of its identity based on molecular sequence (nrITS rDNA) data, and determination of its physicochemical parameters such as organoleptic features and fluorescent behavior. Materials and methods: Collected basidiocarps were powdered and used for microscopic and organoleptic evaluation. 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method, total antioxidant activity methods, and 2,2-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) assay were used for evaluating the antioxidant capacities of the methanolic extract. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis profile was also recorded to analyze the phenolic fingerprint. Results: The DPPH radical scavenging activity was determined with an EC50 value of 0.912 μg, total antioxidant activity was found to be 15.33 μg ascorbic acid equivalent/mg of extract, and the ABTS assay revealed 12.91 μm TE/mg of extract antioxidant activity. The HPLC chromatogram revealed the presence of 12 peaks. Several parameters were tested for the determination of chemical composition, revealing the existence of major bioactive components in the extract in the following order: phenol>flavonoid>ascorbic acid>β-carotene~lycopene. Conclusion: The present work suggests that O. canarii may be considered a novel prospect as a functional food and antioxidant supplement.

... The state West Bengal is geoclimatically exclusive and diverse, being home of the Great Himalayan mountain range, extensive coastal and Gangetic plains, barren and extreme plateaus, which provides a niche for an unfathomable number of macrofungi to flourish (Dutta et al. 2015a, b). Thus, several new taxa belonging to a number of agaric genera have been described in recent times from the region by a number of researchers (Dutta et al. 2014, 2015a, b, Das et al. 2015, Paloi et al. 2015, 2016. ...
