Recently a large bloom of opportunistic macroalgae, with Ulva lactuca as the dominant species, covered the lower reach of the permanently open Knysna Estuary. The occurrence of an opportunistic species is globally considered a sign of eutrophication. The aims of this study were to determine the impact of the bloom on the Zostera capensis beds and i...

MOSE is a system of mobile gates engineered to temporarily isolate the Venice Lagoon from the Adriatic Sea and to protect the city from flooding during extreme high tides. Within the framework of the Venezia2021 program, we conducted two enclosure experiments in July 2019 (over 48 h) and October 2020 (over 28 h) by means of 18 mesocosms, in order to simulate the structural alterations that microphytobenthos (MPB) assemblages might encounter when the MOSE system is operational. The reduced hydrodynamics inside the mesocosms favored the deposition of organic matter and the sinking of cells from the water column towards the sediment. Consequently, MPB abundances increased over the course of both experiments and significant changes in the taxonomic composition of the community were recorded. Species richness increased in summer while it slightly decreased in autumn, this latter due to the increase in relative abundances of taxa favored by high organic loads and fine grain size. By coupling classical taxonomy with 18S rRNA gene metabarcoding we were able to obtain a comprehensive view of the whole community potential, highlighting the complementarity of these two approaches in ecological studies. Changes in the structure of MPB could affect sediment biostabilization, water turbidity and lagoon primary production.
... The composition of diatom populations grown on natural substrates has also been described, in both heavily anthropised and undisturbed areas (Facca et al., 2002a, b;Facca & Sfriso, 2007;Çolak Sabanci & Koray, 2010;Çolak Sabanci, , 2012a2012b, 2013Cibic & Facca, 2010 and references therein). Furthermore, studies have been conducted on epiphytic diatom communities on macroalgae and seagrasses (Car et al., 2012;De Stefano et al., 2000) and epizoic diatoms on animals (Romagnoli et al., 2007, 2014 andreferences therein). ...

Epilithic diatom community structures are compared among three locations of the eastern Adriatic Sea coast (Croatia), in the presence of two different invasive Caulerpa species, C. taxifolia and C. cylindracea, which have spread rapidly in the Mediterranean in the last decades. Forty samples were taken seasonally at three sites (island of Hvar, island of Mljet, and Dubrovnik) between November 2008 and October 2010. Light and electron microscopy examinations were used for qualitative analysis. Altogether 310 epilithic taxa belonging to 65 genera were identified. The highest number of these taxa belonged to Mastogloia (48) and Amphora (32), followed by Diploneis (24), Nitzschia (23), Navicula (22), and Cocconeis (19). A similar seasonal shift in growth form structure was observed for epilithic communities at the three sampling sites, where the number of erect group diatoms doubled (Hvar, Mljet) and tripled (Dubrovnik) in spring. Apart from erect forms, Dubrovnik and Mljet were characterised by adnate forms, while Hvar was characterised by tube-dwelling forms. The highest values of the Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index were recorded in autumn and ranged from 5.26 to 5.34. ANOSIM tests performed on species relative abundance data confirmed that the diatom communities differed significantly between the sampling sites, and that the differences were correlated with the presence of the two species of invasive macroalgae (Hvar – area of C. taxifolia; Mljet and Dubrovnik – areas of C. cylindracea). As revealed by SIMPER analyses, the group of taxa contributing the most to variance between diatom assemblages from sites of different invasive alga included Cocconeis scutellum var. scutellum, Rhopalodia pacifica, Navicula ramosissima, and Berkeleya rutilans. Although the spatial variation in communities may also reflect the effects of unmeasured environmental variables, the results suggest the possible influence of invasive seaweeds of the genus Caulerpa which may affect the habitat by competing with autochthonous algae. This study contributes to the knowledge of diatom diversity both at regional and at broader scales in these challenged environments.

Marmara Gölü’nden 185 adet ve Homa Lagünü’nden 172 adet olmak üzere toplam 357 Gümüş balığı, cinsiyet farkı gözetilmeksizin incelenmiştir. Total boy ve ağırlık dağılımı Marmara Gölü’nde 5.6-8.2 cm ve 1.30-3.99 g, Homa Lagünü’nde ise 3.7-9.9 cm ve 0.32-6.30 g olarak belirlenmiştir. Boy-ağırlık ilişkisi eşitlikleri Marmara Gölü için; W=0.0059L3.118 (sh(b)=0.068), r=0.920, Homa Lagünü için; W=0.0077L2.925 (sh(b)=0.062), r=0.929 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Marmara Gölü örneklerinde pozitif allometrik, Homa Lagünü örneklerinde ise izometrik büyüme modeli gözlenmiştir. Kondisyon faktörü değerleri, Marmara Gölü örnekleri için 0.62-0.90, Homa Lagünü örnekleri içinse 0.38-0.94 aralığında değişim göstermiştir.
... Benthic diatoms of shallow coastal marine areas give a reliable contribution to the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems in terms of primary production, nutrient fluxes, and roles in the trophic web (MacIntyre et al., 1996;Totti, 2003). Communities of benthic diatoms can develop associated to different substrata, from the soft bottom (epipelon, epipsammon, and endopelon) (Totti, 2003) to rocks (epilithon) Çolak Sabancı and Koray, 2010), macroalgae and seagrasses (epiphyton) (Totti et al., 2009;Pennesi et al., 2011Pennesi et al., , 2012Pennesi et al., , 2013Çolak Sabancı, 2012;Majewska et al., 2013;Lobban and Pennesi, 2014), and animals (epizoon) (Round, 1971;Romagnoli et al., 2007). The peculiar microenvironments provided by marine animals, i.e. metabolite-rich and potentially grazer-free, are successfully exploited by several pennate diatom genera belonging to araphids, biraphids, and monoraphids (Round, 1981). ...

In this work, the valve fine structure, morphology, and dimensions of the epibenthic diatoms living on the marine hydroid Eudendrium racemosum Cavolini were investigated through SEM analysis. Hydroid samples were collected from the Ligurian Sea (Mediterranean Sea), from October 2002 to October 2003, with monthly frequency, allowing definition of the annual cycle of diatom communities. Following several taxonomic/systematic papers, this floristics paper documents 32 new records of diatoms (13 araphid, 17 biraphid, 2 monoraphid), which have been classified into different growth forms (adnate, erect, motile, tube-dwelling). Moreover, new information on morphologic data and biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea are offered, indicating their ecological preferences.

Diatoms are used for monitoring the environmental conditions of water. We have little information about centric diatoms in Turkish freshwaters. A total of 50 samples were collected from some springs and small streams of Türkmen Mountain. As a result, 7 species [Cyclotella meneghiniana Kützing, C. ocellata Pantocsek, Cyclostephanos dubius (Fricke) Round, Handmannia balatonis (Pantocsek) Kulikovskiy & Solak comb. nov., Melosira varians Agardh, Stephanodiscus hantzschii Grunow, and S. minutulus (Kützing) Cleve & Möller] were identified, and we also suggest in this study that a new combination for Cyclotella balatonis Pantocsek should be Handmannia balatonis comb. nov. and for C. praetermissa Lund should be Handmannia praetermissa comb. nov.
