This paper reports on continuing work on visualising email collaboration (O.A. Puade and T.G. Wyeld, 2006). It reports on the re- interviewing of participants of a previous email collaboration visualisation study regarding the identification of key players. Participants were asked to comment on the finding of key player impact on the collaboration as determined by our analysis and methods. We found, while they mostly agreed with our analysis they expressed reservations regarding the methods used. This forms the ground work for yet further work in developing a real-time visualisation tool for email-mediated collaboration. The qualitative analysis case-study method used in this study helped gain a deeper understanding of the nature and characteristic of the collaboration that would otherwise have been hidden in a quantitative analysis.

Email is an important form of asynchronous communication. Visualizing analyses of email communication patterns during a collaborative activity help us better understand the nature of collaboration, and identify the key players. By analysing the contents of email communication and adding reflective comments on its perceived importance from the participants of a collaboration new information can be gleaned not immediately obvious in its original flat form. This paper outlines a proof-of-concept prototype collaborative email visualisation schema. Data from a collaboration case study is analysed and subsequently employed to construct a display of the relative impact of both key players and the types of email used.

The design of virtual workplaces that can support virtual work processes has traditionally been either ad-hoc, or has been influenced by the top-down approaches, such as 'virtual architecture' and requirements identification and analysis. There are several problems with the top-down approaches. We still lack knowledge about how people collaborate in distributed computer-mediated information environments, hence, the requirements in the top-down approach are usually derived from the expectation of how the business process will run in a face-to-face environment. Another problem with existing groupware support for such environments is the difficulty in obtaining, and subsequently retaining and reusing, ready-made configurations of collaborative work processes. Such configurations naturally occur during the actual use of collaborative system when conducting projects. These configurations reflect the actual dynamics of the process, adapting the environment to support emerging work processes. Can we learn more about the actual collaboration in a virtual environment (rather than the one derived from the face-to-face expectations)? Can we reuse this knowledge for better support of computer-mediated collaborative projects? Can we predict some elements of the evolution of a new collaborative process, based on similarities and analogies with processes formalised and s upported before? Can we predict possible emergent processes and cater for them? Can we capture and utilise the evolutionary component in the workspace design process, so that we can provide better support to the developers of collaborative workspaces? The paper presents the latest developments of a new approach for supporting design and redesign of collaborative virtual workspaces, based on combining data mining techniques for refining lower level models with a reverse engineering cycle to create upper level models. The methodology utilises an apriori knowledge about the data models in the systems and a visual language for formal process representation.

Context: A wide variety of technologies have been developed to support Global Software Development (GSD). However, the information about the dozens of available solutions is quite diverse and scattered making it quite difficult to have an overview able to identify common trends and unveil research gaps. Objective: The objective of this research is to systematically identify and classify a comprehensive list of the technologies that have been developed and/or used for supporting GSD teams. Method: This study has been undertaken as a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS). Our searches identified 1958 papers out of which 182 were found suitable for inclusion in this study. Results: We have identified 412 technologies reported to be developed and/or used for supporting GSD teams from 182 papers. The identified technologies have been analyzed in order to categorize them using four main classification schemas for providing a framework that can help identify the categories that have attracted significant amount of research and commercial efforts, and the research areas where there are gaps to be filled. Conclusions: The findings show that whilst commercial and open source solutions are predominantly focused on specialized tools as well as platforms, research effort was concentrated on providing integrated environments, frameworks, and plug-in based solutions. Considering the findings in the context of previously proposed research agendas, some of the key challenges for GSD research (i.e., collaborative tools and innovative knowledge management systems) shows that lots of collaborative technologies have been reported, but knowledge management is being addressed by focusing on supporting awareness, which is being considered as important as the three elements of 3C model (i.e., communication, collaboration, and coordination). We also conclude that future effort in this area should pay more attention to devising solutions which can fulfill several kinds of requirements necessitated by a broader set of challenges being faced by GSD practitioners rather than tackling individual issues.

This work introduces an information visualization component that appears as an additional window in an online collaborative e-learning environment, and can be used for viewing, browsing, editing and manipulating knowledge-based learning information through the LiveNet (http://138.25.13.210:8000/ln4-1) -a knowledge management and enterprise collaboration tool. This visual component employs a new visualization technique, called ENCCON (Nguyen and Huang, 2004), which uses a connection + enclosure layout method and a semi-transparency navigation mechanism to handle large scale of hierarchical learning information and it aims to provide a better assistance to the users of LiveNet for visual manipulation and navigation of knowledge-based data objects. The use of visualization techniques in LiveNet provides users with not only a 2D graphical visual interface for direct data manipulation, but also a set of clear views, the focus+context views, of the interrelations among the data objects which enhances the understanding of relational information that the users want to see. Although the proposed visualization technique ENCCON can be applied in many domains, we only concern its application in the domain of collaborative e-learning through the LiveNet.
