The family Theraphosidae is recorded from Greece for the first time with the description of a new species, Chaetopelma lymberakisi sp. n. Also, the male of Macrothele cretica Kulczyński, 1903 is re-described and the female of the same species is described for the first time.

The interplay between ecology and morphology holds significant importance in the field of evolutionary ecology. Miniaturization, a prevalent trend across diverse branches of the tree of life, often emerges as a consequence of adaptation to specific ecological niches. However, the causes and outcomes of miniaturization can vary significantly among different taxa. In our study, we utilized tarantulas as a model system to explore whether microhabitat choices are linked to morphological characteristics. Specifically, we examined whether the transition to a non-burrowing, ground-dwelling lifestyle is associated with miniaturization. Our findings indicate that the evolution of morphological traits in tarantulas has primarily been influenced by stabilizing selection, with no discernible difference in morphotypes associated with fossorial or arboreal habits. Nevertheless, we observed that whenever tarantulas opportunistically transitioned to a non-burrowing, ground-dwelling lifestyle—such as living under rocks, logs, or within crevices—they seem to have undergone body-form miniaturization and a reduction in the ratio of forelimb to hindlimb length. This study underscores the potential for repeated shifts to unique ecological niches to disrupt the conventional trajectory of morphological evolution, resulting in the emergence of novel phenotypes.

New data on the tarantula genus Chaetopelma Ausserer, 1871 are provided. A new species, Ch. persianum sp. nov., is described based on a single female specimen collected in northwestern Iran, which represents the easternmost record of the genus within its entire known range. Additionally, the correct publication date of Ch. olivaceum C.L. Koch, 1842 is discussed, and the known distribution records of all Chaetopelma species are mapped.

Despite their ecological importance and diversity, spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) are underrepresented in conservation policies in comparison to other groups. We review all extant conservation tools focusing on spiders in Europe, highlighting general patterns, limitations, gaps, and future directions. We assembled a comprehensive online database reporting all available information concerning the legal protection and conservation status of 4,154 spider species. Existing international legislation has limited coverage, with only one species listed in the Bern Convention and EU Habitats Directive. At the national and subnational levels, 178 species are formally mentioned in the legislation of 19 European countries. Moreover, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) includes assessments for 301 species worldwide, 164 of these threatened and eight native to Europe. In addition, spiders are mentioned in Regional Red Lists and Red Books in 28 out of 42 European countries considered in this review. Northern and Central European countries have the highest percentage of species assessed at the regional level in Red Lists and Red Books. The Mediterranean basin has the highest spider diversities in Europe but conservation efforts are lacking, both in terms of assessments and national or subna-tional legislation. Among European species, Dolomedes plantarius, Argyroneta aquatica and Eresus kollari are the most frequently mentioned in European conservation measures, possibly due to their ecological traits and their strict association with declining habitats. Considering the current threats to spiders in Europe, the protection of large areas of suitable habitat should be considered as the most effective approach to spider conservation.

A new spider species of genus Macrothele Ausserer, 1871 is described, based on a single female specimen collected from Taurus Mountains, Turkey. The new species, Macrothele drolshageni sp. n. differs from representatives of the genus from Europe by both somatic traits and the shape of vulvae. The new species is described in detail and habitus and vulvae pictures are presented.

In this report, we present the results of the action "Inventory of habitat 8310 in the project sites" (action A1.2) which aims to collect and analyze data to describe and evaluate the conservation of habitat 8310 (Caves not open in the public) in 8 sites of the project [caves Tzani and Psimaki (Crete), cave Limon (Achaia), cave Za (Naxos island), Aliartos sinkhole (Voiotia), Spilaiovarathro cave (Pella), Zesta Nera cave (Serres) and Maroneia cave (Komotini)] the relevant invertebrate fauna and the typical species. In addition, a brief reference is made to some interesting species in the lower Panagopoula’s tunnel although as a technical work is irrelevant with habitat 8310.
