A comprehensive analysis of the species diversity and distribution of Lepraria Ach. in part of the Polish Carpathians is presented. The treatment is based on morphological and chemical examination of a large collection of the genus originating from the Beskid Sądecki Mts. Thirteen species occur in the region: L. borealis Lohtander & Tønsberg, L. ca...

The mesovoid shallow substratum (MSS) is a unique habitat that shelters and serves as a microrefuge for epigean, endogean and hypogean invertebrate species. Understanding the MSS community′s spatio-temporal structure and species diversity patterns in relation to the environmental parameters plays a crucial role in conservation. In this study we inv...

Although the National Park Malá Fatra covers an area of only 222.17 km 2 , it is very diverse and miscellaneous. Many various vegetation types are spread on such a small area in mosaics along the altitudinal gradient and according to geological bedrock, orientation and topography. The species diversity and the uniqueness of the regional flora is a...

The study was focused on soil factors influencing species richness and diversity after disturbance of the substrate followed by abandonment. Two types of disturbances in the past were considered: the removal of trees and shrubs with the resulting major destruction of soils, and deep ploughing. The aim of the study was to evaluate the distribution of lichen species of the genus Lepraria in Knyszyn Forest (NE Poland) to different forest plant communities. Six species of Lepraria [L. eburnea J. R. Laundon, L. elobata Tønsberg, L. incana (L.) Ach., L. jackii Tønsberg, L. lobificans Nyl. and L. vouaxii (Hue) R. C. Harris] recorded from Knyszyn Forest. Lepraria eburnea is a new species for the studied area. The most common species were Lepraria incana and L. lobificans. Among the studied forest communities the richest in species (5 species of Lepraria) were oak-hornbeam forest (Tilio-Carpinetum), and the least species-rich (2 species) were maple-linden slope forest (Aceri-Tilietum), alder carr (Carici elongatae-Alnetum) and spruce forest (Sphagno girgensohnii-Piceetum). The richest lichen diversity in the Knyszyn Forest was found on deciduous trees such as Carpinus betulus L. and Quercus robur L. (4 species), Tilia cordata Mill. (3 spp.), and conifers such as Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. and Pinus sylvestris L. (3 spp.).
... In the late 1980s the lichen biota of the Beskid Sądecki Mts was studied by Lucyna Śliwa and Bryjarka was one of the examined localities. Twenty species were recorded there, including 7 species which had not been previously reported from this location (Śliwa 1989;Kukwa, Śliwa 2005). Unpublished data collected by Józef Kiszka, Robert Kościelniak (in the years 1994-1995 and Joanna Kozik (2014) enlarge the list with 9 more species. ...

Abstra ct: The aim of this article is to present the history and the current state of Bryjarka hill, situated in Szczawnica (the Beskid Sądecki range in southern Poland) in relation to its environmental and cultural values. Another aim of this article is to show that Bryjarka hill plays an important role in the biological, geological and cultural aspects of the region. It represents cultural significance where the traces of human activities date back to medieval times.
... Ecology & distribution: This anamorphic lichenized fungus seems to be the most common Lepraria in the Western Carpathians. In addition to the Babia Góra Massif, many sites occur in the Gorce Mts (Czarnota & Kukwa 2001), Beskid Sądecki Mts (Kukwa & Śliwa 2005), and Tatra Mts (Kukwa 2004) where it usually grows on conifer bark, decaying stumps and snags, and roots of fallen trees. This cyanolichen from the study area has a small thallus composed of numerous spreading squamules up to 3 mm in width, but most do not exceed 1.5 mm. ...

A lichen survey of the Donetsk Upland (SE Ukraine) was conducted based on data collected between 2005 and 2007 and a detailed review of the literature. A total of 233 species (221 lichens and 12 lichenicolous fungi) were recorded. Five species are recorded for the first time for Ukraine: Caloplaca raesaeneni, Cladonia magyarica, C. peziziformis, Endococcus rugulosus and Rinodina cf. guzzinii. A large number of species are new records for particular biogeographic regions, including 22 species new for the plain part of Ukraine, 15 for the steppe zone of Ukraine and 145 for the Donetsk Upland. Several of the species listed here were only recently first reported for Ukraine. Some misunderstood or questionable literature records from the Donestk Upland, such as Caloplaca teicholyta, Diploschistes scruposus, Lecanora frustulosa, Rinodina exigua and Thrombium cretaceum, are discussed.
