Gene rearrangement is not observed. The mitochondrial genome of L. ikeae exhibits an AT preference, with AT skew > 0 and GC skew < 0 across the entire genome. The phylogenetic relationships of Sicydiinae based on 13 mitochondrial PCG sequences are Sicydium + (Stiphodon + (Sicyopus + Lentipes)) + Sicyopterus, indicating that Sicydium, Sicyopterus, Lentipes, and Stiphodon are all monophyletic groups. Abstract We sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome of Lentipes ikeae and explored the phylogenetic relationships among Sicydiinae based on mitochondrial genome sequences. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of L. ikeae was determined using the Illumina HiSeq X Ten sequencing platform, and the gene structural characteristics and base composition were analyzed. A new species of goby of the subfamily Sicydiinae, Lentipes niasensis, is described from the stream of Humogo River, Nias Island, Indonesia. This species can be distinguished from all congeners by the following combination of features: (1) fin ray counts: D2 I/10; A I/10; P 17–18; D1 not connected to D2 in either sex. (2) squamation: LR 7–11; anterior half of body naked, lateral body scales present from 5–6th rays of second dorsal-fin to hypural, embedded in skin. (3) upper jaw teeth in male 14–19 and in female 33–38. (4) urogenital papilla in male slender and distally pointed, flanked by pair of associated fleshy lobes and not retractable into sheath–like groove. We document four male colour morphs of the Indo-Pacific goby genus Lentipes in Japan and the Philippines. Despite distinctive colour patterns, males of the different morphs could not be distinguished by meristic or morphometric characters. In contrast, co-occurring females had very similar colouration and could not be sorted into different types. We observed that the four types are not distinguished by mitochondrial genome sequences. On the other hand, genome-wide SNPs analysis clearly separated the four types, suggesting that they indeed represent four independent lineages. We considered that the four lineages could have diverged recently, and therefore, the sorting of mitochondrial haplotypes may not have been completed yet. One of the four lineages is identified as L. armatus Sakai & Nakamura, 1979 Sakai, H., & Nakamura, M. (1979). Two new species of freshwater gobies (Gobiidae: Sicydiaphiinae) from Ishigaki Island, Japan. The recently described Stiphodon annieae (Keith & Hadiaty, 2015) was thought to be endemic to Halmahera Island, Indonesia. However, from August 2019 to January 2020, we collected several specimens during field trips to the Soho, Simpong, and Uso rivers in Luwuk Banggai, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. We describe specimens collected in the Soho River and discuss the ichthyofauna of Luwuk Banggai. This is the first report of S. annieae from Sulawesi. Our records represent a range extension of approximately 500-600 km west of this species' type locality on the island of Halmahera.

Sulawesi is an island famous for its biodiversity, including many endemic species. In particular, Sulawesi has the highest number of gobies in the world, including species with potential as food and/or ornamental fishes. The exploration of freshwater ichthyofauna is important in the context of Indonesian and global biodiversity. This research aimed to identify gobies found in the Luwuk Banggai area of Central Sulawesi, as a contribution to the exploration of Indonesian ichthyofaunal biodiversity. Gobies were sampled from January to March 2019 in the Biak and Koyoan Rivers. The sampled fish were measured and identified based on morphological characteristics. A total of 52 specimens were collected, and identified as belonging to 17 species within two families, the Gobiidae and Eleotridae. Gobies from the Koyoan River comprised 32 specimens from 8 species, while 20 specimens belonging to species were found in the Biak River. Only two species were found in both rivers: Stiphodon semoni and Sicyopterus lagocephalus. These results augment the body of knowledge regarding the presence and distribution of gobies in Indonesia.

With 1172 native species, the Indonesian ichthyofauna is among the world’s most speciose. Despite that the inventory of the Indonesian ichthyofauna started during the eighteen century, the numerous species descriptions during the last decades highlight that the taxonomic knowledge is still fragmentary. Meanwhile, the fast increase of anthropogenic perturbations during the last decades is posing serious threats to Indonesian biodiversity. Indonesia, however, is one of the major sources of export for the international ornamental trade and home of several species of high value in aquaculture. The development of new tools for species identification is urgently needed to improve the sustainability of the exploitation of the Indonesian ichthyofauna. With the aim to build comprehensive DNA barcode libraries, the co-authors have started a collective effort to DNA barcode all Indonesian freshwater fishes. The aims of this review are: (1) to produce an overview of the ichthyological researches conducted so far in Indonesia, (2) to present an updated checklist of the freshwater fishes reported to date from Indonesia’s inland waters, (3) to highlight the challenges associated with its conservation and management, (4) to present the benefits of developing comprehensive DNA barcode reference libraries for the conservation of the Indonesian ichthyofauna.

A new species of the gobiid fish genus Glossogobius is described from Lake Mahalona and compared with a similar species, Glossogobius flavipinnis known only from Lake Towuti, Sulawesi in Indonesia. The new species is a dwarf species, lacking all head pores, a rare condition in the genus. The two Malili Lakes species treated here are allopatric and differ in several features, including colouration of the body and fins, markings on the head and body, fin-ray counts and degree of prolongation of the second dorsal spine in females. A diagnosis is provided for the genus and a full generic synonymy given including justification for the synonymy. Stupidogobius Aurich is regarded as a junior synonym of Glossogobius. A key is provided to the major species complexes of Glossogobius endemic to the Malili Lakes. Ecology and conservation of the two species are discussed.

Insular biodiversity hotspots of Southeast Asia are remarkable for their biodiverse faunas. With a marine larval phase lasting up to several months, the freshwater fish subfamily Sicydiinae has colonized most islands of these hotspots. However, Sicydiinae diversity is still poorly understood in Southeast Asia. With the objective to estimate intraspecific genetic diversity and infer past demography, we conducted the molecular inventory of Sicydiinae species in Sundaland and Wallacea using 652 bp of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene, species delimitation methods and Bayesian Skyline plot reconstructions. In total, 24 Molecular Operational Taxonomic Units are delimited among the 603 sequences belonging to 27 species and five genera. Two cases of discordance between morphology and mitochondrial sequence are observed suggesting ongoing speciation and/or introgression in two genera. Multiple new occurrences are reported, either for a single biodiversity hotspot or both, some of which corresponding to observations of a few individuals far from the range distribution of their conspecifics. Among the ten species or species group whose intraspecific diversity was examined, high levels of genetic diversity and past population expansion are revealed by Tajima’s D tests and Bayesian Skyline Plot reconstructions. Together these results indicate that long-distance dispersal is common and suggest that most endemic species originated through founder events followed by population expansion. Patterns of sexual dimorphism and males’ coloration among diverging species pair seem to point to sexual selection as an important mechanism contributing to speciation in the Sicydiinae of Sundaland and Wallacea.

The biodiversity of freshwater ichthyofauna in Central Sulawesi is still largely unexplored scientifically. Therefore, it is very necessary to carry out a scientific expedition that aims to record fish fauna. The research was conducted on May 15-17, 2022, in Wera River, West Dolo District, Sigi Regency, Central Sulawesi. Fish sampling was carried out at four stations. Location 1 is located near community settlements, then locations 2-4 are located within the Wera Nature Tourism Park area. Fish were caught using beach nets and scoop nets with a mesh size of 1 mm each. Fish were preserved using 70% alcohol and then identified based on morphological characteristics. The results of the preliminary survey found two families and three genera of fishes in the Wera River. These genera, namely Lentipes sp. and Sicyopus sp. (Sicydiinae) are native species, while Poecilia reticulata (Poeciliidae) are introduced fish species (alien) in the Wera River. Sicyopus sp. ranged from 6.1 to 7.2 cm, Lentipes sp. from 3.2 to 4.2 cm, and P. reticulata from 1.3 to 3.6 cm in total length. The habitat of Sicydiinae is in a clear stream with dominant boulders. At locations where there was anthropogenic waste (plastics and organic waste), only P. reticulata were found. This study is the first report on invasive fish in the Wera River. Further morphological and molecular validation for Sicydiinae in the Wera River is needed to determine the species level.
