During investigation of macrofungi from Pakistan, we found basidiomata of a saprophytic fungus (Pluteus sp.) and an ectomycorrhizal fungus (Laccaria sp.). Based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses, the specimens were identified as Pluteus cervinus and Laccaria moshuijun. Full descriptions, line drawings, color images and phylogenetic trees a...

Five species of hygrophoroid fungi belonging to the genera Cuphophyllus and Hygrocybe are reported from the African island nation, Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe. These taxa represent two new species (C. laranja, H. macambrarensis), one undetermined taxon, and two new distributional reports. Comprehensive descriptions, line drawings, color photo...

Although, combined micro-morphological and molecular data can be helpful in the correct identification of species within the genus (Luo et al., 2016;Osmundson et al., 2005;Popa et al., 2014Popa et al., , 2016Wilson et al., 2013). Two species of the genus Laccaria , are described as new reports for Pakistan. Laccaria murina has been collected from a Himalayan moist temperate forest in Khanspur, KP, while L. pumila was found in the moist temperate forests of Kumrat Valley in Dir Upper, KP, and at higher altitudes of the Deosai plains of Gilgit‐Baltistan, Pakistan. Phylogenetic analysis based on the nrITS region clustered the Pakistani species with L. murina sequences with other Asian collections and L. pumila from USA and Netherlands. SEM of basidiospores along with detailed micro‐morphological data are provided. General distribution, habitat, ecology, and diagnostic features are also discussed. Research Highlights It has new reports from Pakistan, studies based on light, scanning electron microscopy, and nrITS molecular markers. These species have been described with detailed micro‐morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses. General distribution, ecology, diagnostic features, and comparisons with closely related specimens have been provided. Graphical representation of DNA extraction and geographical locations of sampling sites are also illustrated (Figures 1 and 2 ). Very few members of this genus are already described from Pakistan.
... squarrous (Hosen et al., 2019), and Plu. cervinus (Ishaq et al., 2021) have been sequenced for the ITS region. Pluteus hubregtseorum was described using both the nrITS and EF1-α genes (Ševčíková et al., 2021). ...
... No toxic species in Pluteus are known (Halling et al., 1987). The genus is known for edible species, including Pluteus cervinus (Halling et al., 1987;Ishaq et al., 2021). Confusion with members from the Rhodophyllaceae is possible due to the Pluteaceae family sharing pink spores, attached gills, spores that are angular in outline and a regular to irregular gill trama (Halling et al., 1987). ...

Psilocybin and psilocin, two psychoactive components found in "magic mushrooms," have therapeutic potential in a number of mental health disorders without the addictiveness and overdose risks found in other mind-altering drugs, such as cocaine, methamphetamines and alcohol. Psychedelic mushrooms occur naturally, are wide distributed and easily accessible. The need for reviews and comprehensive field guides is urgent due to the recent surge of research into psychedelic mushrooms along with public interest. Psilocybin and psilocin are recorded in mushroom species of Psilocybe, Panaeolus, Pluteus, and Gymnopilus. This review discusses species identification, taxonomy and classification, available DNA sequence data and psychedelic species in Psilocybe, Panaeolus, Pluteus, and Gymnopilus, as well as similar looking genera that could be harmful.
... Pluteus Fr. (Pluteaceae, Agaricales) is a large, monophyletic, and widely distributed genus comprising about 300 species and is quite common in boreal to tropical habitats (Menolli and Capelari 2014;Ševčíková et al. 2020Ishaq et al. 2021;Kaygusuz et al. 2021). Majority of the species are lignicolous and are characterized by basidiomes with free and pinkish brown lamellae, non-ornamented, inamyloid basidiospores, and convergent hymenophoral trama. ...
... Section Hispidoderma is characterized by pileipellis as a cutis, trichoderm, or hymeniderm comprising elongated elements and non-metuloid pleurocystidia. Section Celluloderma Fayod is characterized by pileipellis organized as an hymeniderm with short, clavate or spheropedunculate elements and non-metuloid pleurocystidia (Justo et al. 2011b;Ishaq et al. 2021). The earliest record of Pluteus Fr. from India was that of Berkeley (1850) as Agaricus followed by various reports (Pradeep et al. 2002(Pradeep et al. , 2012Pradeep and Vrinda 2006). ...

Two Pluteus species are described here based on the macro- and micro-morphological characters. These characters are accompanied by phylogenetic analysis which supported their identification as Pluteus cervinus (Schaeff) P. Kumm. and P. salicinus (Pers.) P. Kumm. Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) of nrDNA was used for molecular characterization. P. salicinus represents a new record to India whereas P. cervinus represents new record to Jammu and Kashmir.

Lentinus squarrosulus (Mont.) Singer: an edible macro-fungus is reported from the moist temperate Himalayan forests of Pakistan. The sample was studied based on morphological characteristics and nucleotide sequence analyses of the ITS region. Studies based on morpho-anatomical and molecular data are consistent with formerly reported specimens. Lentinus squarrosulus represents the first report for Pakistan.
