The objective of this study is to elaborate on the development of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) at the bottom of the economy, where most of them began as unbanked micro-ventures and may continue to be micro-enterprises even after being elevated to higher levels. This study contributes to the field of entrepreneurial finance by identifying the factors that influence the drivers and constraints of MSE upgrading. This paper employed models to show how unbanked MSEs transition to bankable ones, as well as to reveal the dynamics of MSEs’ transition to bankability during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study’s unit of analysis is MSEs, which initially have little or no access to bank loans. This study employs system dynamics (SD) modeling to investigate and manage the multifaceted response system of MSEs’ growth toward bankability in the face of a coronavirus pandemic in Indonesia. This study also simulates a coronavirus pandemic outbreak to fine-tune MSEs’ progress toward bankability. The dynamic models in this study reveal a number of variables that are critical in accelerating the bankability status of MSE from un-bankable to bankable, namely entrepreneurial MSE time to bankability, channel business, and MSE NPL. Policymakers can create high leverage policies for MSE bankability progression by changing these values.

The feasibility of Turkish Individual Pension System (IPS) for participants is empirically investigated under different scenarios determined based on its special conditions. Firstly, a system behaviour of the Turkish IPS is modelled by using system dynamics simulation method by taking into account the historical data of a pension company operating in Turkey. After that, all pension plans are evaluated under five “what-if” scenarios depending on the participant's age and the investment period that the deductions and the investment returns are directly related to these conditions. Secondly, the key performance metrics (i.e., net present value and profitability index) are measured to better understand which pension plans are suitable or not for participants. In conclusion, the IPS investment is not suitable for short-term investments, however, all pension plans are profitable in the medium-long term. In the long term, the IPS, particularly dynamic and aggressive funds, is determined as a very profitable investment tool for participants.

Land subsidence resulting from the overexploitation of groundwater is an important issue in the Choshui River Basin, Taiwan. In the current study, we employed system dynamics simulation in modeling the supply of surface and groundwater, as well as the demand for water by industry, water deficits, and mechanisms underlying land subsidence. The proposed model was then used to estimate the magnitude of land subsidence and evaluate various management strategies. Our simulation results revealed that the vigorous enforcement of well sealing would have a modest effect on land subsidence; however, it would also have notable adverse effects on the agricultural community. We determined that reducing the demand for irrigation water (e.g., by switching to less water-intensive crops) would reduce land subsidence, while preserving profitability in those areas. In the future, this policy could be complemented by promoting the adoption of advanced irrigation technology and automatic systems to further slow the excessive exploitation of groundwater, with a corresponding effect on land subsidence.

Technological improvements allow changing a significant part of the electricity generation investments to renewable energies. Especially in emerging markets and energy import-dependent countries, shift to renewable energy generation became more important to break the links of dependency. Pakistan relies on imported fossil fuels; however, the country’s experience and ambition about the renewable energy transition gain prominence in recent years. Considering the long-term life cycle of energy infrastructure investments, possible risk factors and their dynamic nature must be analysed before the financial decisions are taken. This article aims to propose a system dynamics model for the risk analysis of investment life cycle. In this study, possible risk factors are detected and discussed in different categories. The casual loop diagram of possible risk factors and risk assessment model are designed, and the impacts are analysed. Case study of the proposed model in Pakistan highlighted the importance of commercial risks. The results achieved through this study will guide investors, sector participants and policymakers to develop stable strategies for promoting renewable energy in the country. JEL: Q42, P48, O13

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to find solutions to improve the red meat sector in an emerging economy, Turkey, from the circular economy point of view, and taking sustainability approach. The need for circular management within the red meat sector in Turkey is emphasized by using Grey method. As theoretical contribution of this study, the investigation of the causes of losses at the slaughter stages of the red meat supply chain leads to proposals for sustainable and circular solutions. Design/methodology/approach Grey method is used to predict the number of slaughtered cattle and the amount of bone and blood waste in the slaughtering process between 2018 and 2020. Findings It is revealed that according to Grey prediction calculations, although the amount of slaughtered cattle, bone and blood waste seem have decreased between 2018 and 2020, there are still significant losses in Turkish red meat sector. For bone waste, this is expected to be 56,581,200 kg in 2018, 48,235,840 kg in 2019 and 41,121,380 kg in 2020. For blood waste, it is expected to be 24,754,275 kg in 2018, 21,103,180 kg in 2019 and 17,990,604 kg in 2020. Social implications The proposed model in the study will contribute on sector revitalization, increase in product safety, quality and hygiene, development in the management of training and education centers for farmers/labors and increase in employment. Originality/value This paper represents policymakers with a proposal for triple bottom line (TBL) based circular and central slaughterhouse model, based on TBL, which brings social, economic and environmental benefits for the red meat sector in Turkey.

Despite the fact that Building Information Modelling (BIM) is one of the most promising technological developments for the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry, the body of literature addressing its financial implications on corporate level is still limited. Therefore, we propose a quantification model that is based on design science research and provides an enhanced understanding of cost and benefit implications arising from BIM investments from a systems theory perspective. The quantification model developed in System Dynamics (SD) is based on a literature review as well as a case study, whereby the socio-technical nature of BIM, its various tangible and intangible benefits as well as its multiple impact levels on the corporate system are taken into account. The results of our simulation experiments within the scope of the case study reveal that the interplay of costs and benefits of BIM with the subsystems of the organisation is manifold, which results in a long-term improvement of the company’s economic performance. Through the lens of systems theory, the financial impacts of the BIM investment can be examined by integrating all costs and benefits into the subsystems of the organisation and by investigating their interplay on system level rather than treating them as isolated system elements. The body of literature in the area of IT/IS investment evaluation proposes a variety of methods and techniques for the ex-ante assessment of IT/IS investments. However, the financial evaluation of intangible benefits associated with IT/IS investments in general and investments in innovative IT/IS in particular still remains a problem area of high relevance to decision makers. As a consequence, investment decisions are still taken by practitioners as an “act of faith”. With this in mind, it is our primary aim to develop a quantification model for the financial assessment of intangible benefits concerning investments in innovative IT/IS. Based on an augmented reality and smart glasses application scenario from the construction domain, we demonstrate how intangible benefits of innovative IT/IS investments can be visualised and measured more effectively by means of utility effect chains and system dynamics prior to their incorporation into a cost–benefit analysis. Based on design science research, the quantification model is developed by means of a systematic literature review and evaluated using the augmented reality application scenario in construction. The model can serve as an aid to the managerial decision making process by providing an enhanced understanding of the various tangible and intangible benefits associated with the investment. In a build, operate, and transfer (BOT) scheme, as Project Finance (PF), equity investors are concerned about the adequacy of their returns. On the other hand, the timeliness of the project debt service payments focuses to the lenders. Consequently, an important role is played by PF and risk modeling to ensure that structure of the project management is a prerequisite. Nevertheless, the complexity of future infrastructure project will become more complicated. Not only will the limitations of stakeholders to understand others when evaluating a project will become more prevalent, but also the competition force the bidders to become increasingly innovative in their financing modeling. The aim of this paper is to propose a new technique to calculate project finance and risks using System Dynamics (SD) approach with sysdea modeling. The model builds confidence and its policy implications. This paper results is PF and risk modeling should use an SD approach in toll road projects.

The purpose of this study is to determine the level effectiveness, implementation and sustainability of three hierarchial regulations related to Water Quality management at Cisadane River, Tangerang City. Regulations related to the quality of river water that will be studied is the Government Regulation No. 82/2001 [1] on Management of Water Quality and Water Pollution Control, Banten Provincial Regulation No. 10/2012 [2] on Protection and Environmental Management, and Tangerang City Regional Regulation No. 2/2013 [3] on Management of Water Quality and Water Pollution Control. Reviewed aspects is the role of government, institutional management, technical operations, financial and funding, and public participations. Overall aspects analized using SWOT method. The result of this study show that the regulations related to the management of river water quality have not been able to be applied properly. Evaluation need to be done thorough of all stakeholders so that the rule can be applied, especially given that the Province of Banten not have regulations on water quality management, and given the Government Regulation No. 82/2001 [1] has to be revised.
