... presented in Fig. 1 show that adding organic food waste to soil decreased the pH values compared to the control. The pH decreases may be due to the accumulation of organic acids during the decomposition of these materials in addition to the microbe's activity during both seasons, especially in C 4 treatment (combined isolated soy protein, eggshell, banana ...

Replacing sucrose with non-caloric sweeteners is an approach to avoid overweight and diabetes development. Non-caloric sweeteners are classified into either artificial as sucralose or natural as stevia. Both of them have been approved by FDA, but the effects of their chronic consumption are controversial. The present study aimed to evaluate the eff...

Introduction: Public health professionals established a direct link between obesity and the rise in high caloric beverage intake. Current recommendations promote the elimination of sweet fruit drinks from the population's diet. One way of evading this is by modifying the drink's nutritional characteristics regarding nutrient uptake and utilization...

... Although the use of synthetic fertilizers is a prevalent practice in conventional agriculture, the resulting decline in soil biodiversity and subsequent environmental degradation pose significant challenges to agricultural sustainability (Gamage et al., 2023). The rise in popularity of organic foods has effectively mitigated adverse environmental effects (Youssef et al., 2020). However, it was observed that organic farming yields are lower compared to conventional farming (Gamage et al., 2023), primarily due to reduced nutrient availability and challenges related to pest and disease management (Kapoulas et al., 2017;Fahrurrozi et al., 2022). ...

The application of biostimulants to improve plant growth, quality, and productivity is an effective and eco-friendly field. Green onion is a widely consumed vegetable due to its nutritional content and distinctive flavor. The response of green onion growth, yield, bioactive compounds accumulation, and antioxidant activity to foliar application of moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf extract (MLE) and yeast extract (YE), as biostimulants was investigated in the present study during 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 seasons under open field conditions. MLE (2%, 4%, and 6%) and YE (1, 2, and 3 g/L) were applied as foliar solutions. The results showed that plant height, fresh weight (FW), dry matter, yield, nutrients content, photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll and carotenoids), bioactive compounds [ascorbic acid, total phenolics content (TPC), and total flavonoids content (TFC)], and antioxidant properties [total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity (IC50)] exhibited a better response to specific levels of YE and MLE. When compared to chemical fertilizers, the increase in green onion yield achieved by YE and MLE was accompanied by a decrease in nitrate content and an increase in total soluble solids (TSS), pyruvic acid, and ascorbic acid. TPC was maximized with chemical fertilizers and 2 g/L of YE. However, no statistical differences were observed in the TFC, TAC, and IC50 among treatments involving chemical fertilizers, moderate, and higher levels of MLE and YE. According to Pearson's correlation analysis, a positive correlation existed between yield and each of ascorbic acid, TPC, TFC, and TAC. The nitrate content correlated negatively with pseudo-stem length, TSS, pyruvic acid, and bioactive compounds. Conclusively, YE and MLE have the potential to make green onion farming more sustainable and resilient with high quality and high nutraceutical content, thus mitigating the need for chemical fertilizers.
... The results showed that the amount of fresh biomass yield responded positively to fertilizer applications. Similarly, organic fertilizer applications led to fresh stevia yields of 4581.7 kg ha À1 (Kumar et al. 2012), 12916.7 kg ha À1 (Youssef, Abdel-Gawad, and Khalifa 2020), 4958.8 kg ha À1 (Khan, Chowdhury, and Karim 2013). These results are consistent with those obtained by Singh and Verma (2015). ...

Stevia is an important medicinal plant that is used as a natural sweetener. Fertilizers are increasing crop yield, preserving and improving soil fertility. This current study has been conducted in the 2019–2020 period to determine the yield, macro and micro-nutrient intake and agronomic performances of stevia. As a plant material criolla seedling was used. 20-20-20 and urea fertilizer have been used as inorganic fertilizers. Organic fertilizers, leonardite, vermicompost and animal manure, were applied in same doses (10 ton ha⁻¹). The results of study are presented as average values of the 2-year period. Fertilizer applications and harvesting time were found to be statistically significant at **P ≤ 0.01 on total stevioside glycoside (TSG). Organic fertilizers affect the stevioside content. The highest total dry plant weight in first harvest was obtained from leonardite (3537 kg ha⁻¹). Fertilizer applications did not have any statistical effects on plant height, number of branches, total fresh plant, total dry plant weight and dry leaf/stem. Harvest times were significant at a level of **P ≤ 0.01 on plant height, total fresh plant and fresh plant weight. The statistical results of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) were affected by fertilizer applications when compared to control application, but Zinc (Zn), Cupper (Cu), Iron (Fe) and Mangan (Mn) results were not affected with any fertilizer applications in the first harvest. There were no statistical differences in parameters between chemical fertilizers and organic fertilizers. It is believed that an organic fertilizer that is suitable under producer conditions is important for stevia and sustainable agriculture.

The application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in agricultural sciences has proved its importance as a mathematical modeling technique for prediction and providing information about the direct effects (relative importance) of the inputs. Many methods have been examined to measure the relative importance (direct or maineffects) of inputs: however, they never report any details regarding the relative importance of interactions among inputs. Indeed, the relative importance explains the role of predictors to better understand the effect of each predictor separately. A total of seven ANN based methods were used in this study to estimate the relative importance (effects) of EC, pH, CaCO3, OM, Silt, and Clay on Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), six of them were used to estimate main effects only, while the seventh one was proposed to estimate both main and interactional effects. The generalized weights (GW) method expresses the importance of independent variables or predictors in ANN models. Nevertheless, it cannot provide any information about the interactions among them. The current study proposes a modification algorithm to the GW method to assess the relative importance of both direct and interactional effects of the selected inputs. The modified generalized weights (MGW) have been examined on an empirical dataset. The empirical dataset presents some chemical soil properties (EC, pH, CaCO3, OM, Silt, and Clay as inputs, and CEC as output). This dataset was divided into three subsets because Silt, Clay, and Sand have multicollinearity and should not be examined together when modeled in ANN. The first subset consists of EC, pH, CaCO3, OM, Silt, and CEC. Silt was replaced with Clay and Sand in the second and third subsets, respectively. All the methods performed well except for Garson’s algorithm and improved Garson’s algorithm. The results of the three subsets revealed that Silt, Clay, and Sand were the most effective components to CEC, followed by EC, pH, CaCO3, OM. Most of the interactions were negative, which means that when one property increased, the effect of the other property on CEC decreased. In contrast, positive interactions mean that when one property increased, the effect of the other property on CEC increased. The MGW seems to be more efficient in providing indexes regarding the direct effects of inputs and their interactions.
