Images of distant galaxies as seen by GSAOI (left, including photometric redshifts of Castellano et al. 2016) and HAWK-I (right, 5 times enlarged). The detection limit for the blurred HAWK-I data is mostly independent of the intrinsic source profiles.

Multi-conjugated adaptive optics (MCAO) yield nearly diffraction-limited images at 2$\mu$m wavelengths. Currently, GeMS/GSAOI at Gemini South is the only MCAO facility instrument at an 8m telescope. Using real data and for the first time, we investigate the gain in depth and S/N when MCAO is employed for $K_{\rm s}$-band observations of distant gal...

... way to compare the images are number counts. The in- terpretation is not straight forward though, because most distant galaxies have angular diameters smaller than the natural seeing. Once convolved by the natural seeing PSF, the galaxy images have approximately the same size (Fig. 5) and respond uniformly to the detection filters. The de- tection limit in MCAO data, on the other hand, depends on the sources' light profiles. A faint and compact object may easily be detected in the MCAO data, but not in a classical image. Likewise, each pixel of an extended low sur- face brightness galaxy could be pushed below the ...

The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the MACS technique used for the elimination of apoptotic rabbit spermatozoa from heterospermic pool (Experiment 1) as well as from the ejaculates of individual bucks (Experiment 2). The semen samples from control (untreated) and magnetically separated spermatozoa (in both E1 and E2) wer...

Background: In cognitive neuroscience, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data are widely analyzed using general linear models (GLMs). However, model quality of GLMs for fMRI is rarely assessed, in part due to the lack of formal measures for statistical model inference. New method: We introduce a new SPM toolbox for model assessment, c...

We present a parametric strong-lensing analysis of three massive galaxy clusters for which Hubble Space Telescope imaging is available, as well as spectroscopy of multiply imaged systems and galaxy cluster members. Our aim is to probe the inner shape of dark matter haloes, in particular the existence of a core. We adopted the following working hypo...

Human pluripotent stem cell (hPSC)-derived mesencephalic dopaminergic (mesDA) neurons can relieve motor deficits in animal models of Parkinson's disease (PD). Clinical translation of differentiation protocols requires standardization of production procedures, and surface-marker-based cell sorting is considered instrumental for reproducible generati...

Non-thermal properties of galaxy clusters have been studied with detailed and deep radio images in comparison with X-ray data. While much progress has been made, most of the studied clusters are at a relatively low redshift (z < 0.3). We here investigate the evolutionary properties of the non-thermal cluster emission using two statistically complet...
