Hypothetical research program to understand how are communities structured. First, controlling factors a their appropriate scales (e.g. climate) affect community properties and in turn they help to determine community structure through changes in space and time. Second, community structure can be better understood after assessing how community properties are interrelated with one another (becoming ‘controlling factors’ of each other).
