We describe a new species of Hohenbergia (Bromeliaceae) from Brazil, H. ituberaensis, a rare species, so far only known from Ituberá municipality, Bahia State, in an area of the Atlantic Forest. The species is similar to H. stellata, presenting a pinkish inflorescence, congested and non-divided branches, pinkish and large floral bracts hiding the s...

... status:-The type locality of the species is surrounded by a high-traffic federal road, the other two localities are natural areas of extractivism, which makes the species vulnerable (VU, IUCN 2001). By plotting the known occurrences in Geocat software (geocat.kew.org), it was estimated that the extent of occurrence is about 41.9 km 2 while the area of occupancy is estimated to be 20 km 2 . ...

However, comparing just the current Hohenbergia, that morphological convergence appears strongly linked with the environment, such as the Atlantic Forest species near the coast, presenting open rosette and lax pyramidal inflorescence, or Drylands species, more inland, with a narrow tubular rosette and cylindrical sessile inflorescence. These species show more morphological similarities among themselves than when compared with their closest phylogenetic relatives, creating a convergent morphological pattern (Baracho 2004;Oliveira 2016a, b;Cavalcante et al. 2020a). ...

Hohenbergia is one the most diverse genera in Bahia state, and inhabits almost all regions of the state. As a result of ongoing studies on Hohenbergia in Bahia, Brazil, here we describe and illustrate Hohenbergia erecta, endemic to the municipality of Mucugê, at Chapada Diamantina. Hohenbergia erecta differs from its morphologically related, H. catingae, by an elongated tubular rosette (vs short stem with a crateriform rosette), and a once-branched cylindrical inflorescence (vs 2–3-branched pyramidal inflorescence), with branches congested at the apex (vs branches laxly arranged). Due to a small distribution area in the Caatinga forest and based on a spatial analysis we categorized it as Endangered (EN), following the IUCN criteria. Hohenbergia erecta is endemic to the central region of Chapada Diamantina, dominant in the area, where no other known Hohenbergia species have been found sympatrically. It is important, however, that new field expeditions are conducted in the region to observe the richness of the genus at Chapada Diamantina.

______________________ 1-Doutorando em ciências, Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Piracicaba-São Paulo (Brazil); ABSTRACT This work aimed to apply a didactic sequence (DS) for environmental awareness of basic-education (BE) students regarding bromeliads and their importance for maintaining biodiversity. The activities were developed in four primary and secondary years (primary 3rd and 4th, and also 4th and 9th years of the secondary), during a school semester, through multidisciplinary projects, using 10 stages of a DS as a base plan for all classes (with proper adaptations to each class). The stages of DS were planned using project approaches, three-moment approach, inverted classroom and field activities. During the activities, the students' commitment to the issues raised was noticed, as well as an awareness of the importance of bromeliads and their relationship with the environment. In general, throughout the execution of the project, the students were motivated by the themes presented, and at the end of the activity, they were better able to respond clearly and critically about the environmental issues raised in the classroom, both with the theme "importance of bromeliads" as with "environmental education and conservation".

Hohenbergia burle-marxii is one of the rarest species of Hohenbergia (Bromeliaceae), until recently known only by the holotype and its clones. The species had been recorded only once in an imprecise locality in Bahia’s south region. After extensive field work we refound the species and we here present a new geographic range of Hohenbergia burle-marxii, at the same time adding information about its morphology and ecologi- cal traits, including a map and photographs of living plants.

Outside of Bahia state, the number of Hohenbergia species decrease, especially in the northern portion (e.g., Rio Grande do Norte state), where according to the latest work for the region, only three species were found (Tomaz & Versieux 2019). ...

We describe a new species from Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil), Hohenbergia densa, that inhabits the dry vegetation of the state. This new species can be recognized by its short and robust habit, differing from other Caatinga-endemic species of the region, that commonly present a broader rosette with a long inflorescence axis. Additionally, we provide illustrations, habit, phenology, a map of occurrence, and a table of morphological comparisons with similar taxa.

Hohenbergia correia-araujoi Pereira & Moutinho is a member of the Bromeliaceae widely used in gardening, endemic to the Bahia state (Brazil), rarely collected since its description in 1980. Although the species is an ornamental bromeliad, the detailed occurrence range and its ecological and morphological traits are poorly known. In this paper, we present the rediscovery of natural populations of Hohenbergia correia-araujoi, adding information about its habitat, habit, plant shape, and presenting new morphological comparisons and geographical distribution of the species, as well photographs of living plants in the field.

The authors describe and illustrate two new species of Wittmackia, W. conduruensis and W. guedesiae. The species are endemic to the state of Bahia with a restricted geographical range, being considered critically endangered (CR) mainly due to habitat fragmentation and illegal extractivism, specifically for regional and international trade. We also present the phenology and compare their morphology with related species.

The authors describe Hohenbergia ymboreorum, a new green-flowered species of Bromeliaceae from Bahia state. The new species was found growing in the municipality of Vitoria da Conquista as a terrestrial in a highland transitional area between Atlantic Forest and Caatinga vegetation. This new species is morphologically related to H. minor and H. augusta, but can be easily distinguished by its sparsely white-lanate inflorescence indument, longer and narrower leaves, smaller flowers, with golden-brown floral bracts not hiding the sepals, and the erect petals. Additionally, the conservation status and phenology are discussed, and a table for morphological comparison with the similar taxa is provided.

The authors describe Hohenbergia amargosensis, a new ornamental species of Bromeliaceae from the Atlantic Forest of the Amargosa city, in Bahia state, Brazil. This new species is morphologically related to H. reconcavensis, but can be distinguished from it by the larger plant size when in bloom, longer inflorescence with laxly arranged branches, and a broader diameter at the base, primary bracts equaling to exceeding the primary branches, primary branches with longer stipe, and lilac petals. Additionally, its conservation status and phenology are discussed, and the illustrations of this new species and its morphologically close relatives are compared.
