The current article deals with the distribution of Oxythyrea funesta (Poda, 1761) in Lithuania. Until 2001, there were no reports on the species from Lithuania: it was known only from old records going as far back as the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. The species was considered very rare in Lithuania but a...

... other Cetoniinae beetles, adults of O. funesta are diurnal. They feed on blooms of various plants, espe- cially those of Asteracea, Rosacea, Apiacea, Brassicacea and Fabacea. However, flowers of other families are vis- ited less frequently. The species was included in the lists of harmful fauna as a pest of apple and peach orchards, vineyards, rosebush plantations, some vegetables and field crops in most countries of southern Europe feeding not only on pollen but damaging floral organs and even buds (Benfatto and Longo 1986;Milenkovic and Stanisavljevic 2003;Vuts, Imrei, and Tóth 2008;Ražov, Baric, and Dutto 2009;Stan, Tuca, and Mitrea 2009;Tuca, Mitrea, and Stan 2009;Ciancio and Mukerji 2010;Subchev et al. 2012). Adults are quite conspicuous having a flat, rectangular-shaped, 8-12 mm long body, which is metallescent black in colour with a reddish- greenish shine. The surface of the body is sparsely covered with yellowish-whitish hairs, pronotum and elytra with whitish spots (Figure 1). Older specimens become hairless with blind spots. Larvae of O. funesta develop in substrates rich in organic matter of rotten vegetation origin (Ražov, Baric, and Dutto 2009), but are most frequently found in manure and dung heaps or decaying vegetative matter (Micó and Galante 2003). Some authors described larvae of O. funesta as *Corresponding author. ... However, roughly since 1990, the species has expanded north and eastwards (Tamutis & Dapkus, 2013;Volynkin et al., 2011). Oxythyrea funesta is now regarded as a ubiquitous extralimital invader and even as a possible agricultural pest (Vuts et al., 2008;Horák et al., 2013;Horák, 2016) ranging from Canary Islands up to Central Asia. ...

Flower chafers (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Cetoniinae) are usually associated with saproxylophagous life strategies, and several of these taxa are considered as flagship species of insect conservation in Europe. Here, we discuss the significance of soil‐dwelling flower chafers for the conservation of natural habitats by reporting the rediscovery of two relict, habitat specialist flower chafers of the genus Oxythyrea in Europe. We compare the observed population structure of both species with their widespread congeners and discuss the detected deep genetic divergences among populations of both species, O. dulcis and O. albopicta . Surprisingly, deep genetic structure has been observed among the psammophilous O. dulcis , which is quite counterintuitive as psammophilous habitats are rather ephemeral and these species tend to be very vagile. Populations of soil‐dwelling, habitat specialist flower beetles may represent relicts of the past paleogeographic events, and their conservation value has to be thoroughly assessed.
... In the past, this species was rarely found in xerothermic areas in Poland. However, it commonly occurs throughout a wide spectrum of open habitats (Horák et al. 2009) and continues to extend its range further north (e.g., Roosileht 2003, Bukejs et al. 2006, Wolender and Zych 2007, Tamutis and Dapkus 2014, Horák 2016, Thomaes et al. 2016. One probable cause for the increased range of S. sexmaculata is the increase in the population of O. funesta. ...

Scolia hirta (Schrank) and Scolia sexmaculata (O.F. Müller) are Palearctic, parasitic Aculeata inhabiting forests and forest steppes. At present, the abundance and dispersal of these species are increasing considerably in Poland and other European countries, allowing observation of their possible habitat preferences. The analysis of the preferences of S. hirta and S. sexmaculata was conducted in Northern and North-Eastern Poland based on the evaluation of their occurrence in six types of habitats: (A) psammophilous and xerothermic grasslands, (B) old fields, (C) city outskirts, (D) sites in housing/industrial zones, (E) sand quarries, (F) post-industrial wastelands, and in a total of three types of landscape: 1) semi-natural, 2) urban, and 3) industrial. We demonstrated that the habitat most frequently colonized by S. hirta is post-industrial wastelands, while S. sexmaculata were most often sampled in old fields, with the frequency of 100% and 94.11%, respectively. At the same time, the abundance of the species in these habitats was also the highest, with a mean of 8.00 and 10.88 individuals, respectively. Moreover, S. hirta was relatively frequently found in the urban landscape (67% in city outskirts and 88.23% in the housing/industrial zones), while S. sexmaculata colonized these areas to a considerably low degree (25% in city outskirts and 29.41% in the housing/industrial zones). We also established that the occurrence of the species was affected by the forest cover in the closest vicinity of the study sites, which significantly modified the habitat preference of the species analyzed.
... C. asparagi was newly discovered in 2011 about 30 km to the west from Kaunas town in quite a numerous population (more than 8 adults were observed) (Bukejs et al., 2012). These facts suggest the possible spread of this species to the north as it had happened with Oxythyrea funesta (Poda, 1761) in the last decade (Tamutis & Dapkus, 2013). The aim to prove this presumption was the main reason to suggest the C. asparagi as the "Insect of the Year 2017". ...

The current report presents information on new records of Crioceris asparagi (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera; Chrysomelidae) in Lithuania. This species was known only from old records going as far back as the middle of nineteen century till 2011. The recent records of C. asparagi suggest the presence of viable population of this species in southwestern part of the country.
