Aims This study delves into the impact of incorporating diverse organic waste materials on soil biological and chemical attributes within the rhizosphere of Albion strawberry plants (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.). Methods Eight organic waste types, including Cow Manure (CM), Poultry Manure (PM), Sheep Manure (SM), Vermicompost (VC), Rice Husk (RH), Wheat Straw (WS), Tea Waste (TW), and Hazelnut Husk (HH), were directly applied before strawberry transplantation. Effects on plant growth, soil chemical, and biological characteristics were assessed. In a controlled greenhouse, animal and plant waste impacts on rhizosphere and strawberry growth were examined. After applying organic waste (5% of pot weight), strawberries were transplanted. Soil moisture was monitored and maintained near field capacity. Employing a 61-day completely randomized design, soil samples were collected, analyzing microbial biomass C, basal soil respiration, dehydrogenase, and catalase. Results Findings revealed TW pronounced influence on basal soil respiration compared to controls, while WS significantly impacted microbial biomass carbon (MBC). SM notably affected DHA, while PM most influenced CA. All treatments augmented OM. SM, CM, and VC increased total N; conversely, TW, RH, WS, HH, and PM decreased it. Conclusions These findings highlight the ability of diverse organic waste to improve soil health and plant development within the rhizosphere of Albion strawberry plants. In addition to adds to our understanding of sustainable farming practices and provides useful information for farmers and policymakers who want to maximize organic waste usage in agricultural systems. More research and field experiments are needed to investigate the long-term impacts of these organic waste additions in real-world agricultural contexts.

Abiotic stresses have been observed to cause alterations in the morphology, physiology, and biochemistry of plants. However, in recent years, the utilization of nanocompounds has emerged as a strategy to induce modifications in multiple facets of plant biology. These modifications include plant growth, nutrient absorption, the production of significant secondary metabolites, and the improvement of plants’ resistance against both abiotic and biotic stress factors. A completely randomized factorial experiment with 12 replications was created. Potassium sources including control, potassium (K), and nanocapsule-potassium (N-K) with concentration 1 µM and temperature treatments including control temperature (25 °C) and high-temperature stress (35 °C) were applied as treatments. In the control treatment, proline was increased at the high temperature, whereas proline was reduced at both treated temperatures by K and N-K. High temperature raised electrolyte leakage (EL), which peaked in the control treatment but was lowered by K and N-K. Temperature-dependent increase in glucose and fructose was observed in control and K treatments when the temperature was 35 °C, but no significant difference was observed between different levels of K at 35 °C. When K was not applied at high temperatures, the main stress indicators such as antioxidant activity (DPPH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) rose significantly, as did the water potential and linoleic acid. When high temperatures were applied, nanocapsule-potassium applied in high temperatures had the lowest stress indices. In conclusion, stress indices diminish when nanocapsule-potassium is applied under high temperatures. Additionally, nanocapsule-potassium applied at high temperatures was preferable to K applied at high temperatures in terms of pepper growth and resistance measures. Likewise, the application of nanocapsule-potassium at high temperatures alters the fatty acid composition of membranes and antioxidant enzymes.

In recent times, hydroponics has gained popularity as a viable solution to the challenges facing traditional agriculture, as it offers an environmentally friendly option with higher crop yields and improved quality, eliminating the need for soil. Despite these benefits, hydroponics still encounters significant difficulties, particularly in optimizing fertigation strategies. The literature contains several studies focusing on test benches for investigating technological recommendations related to fertigation strategies. However, there has been no proposed test bench capable of simultaneously exploring various types of fertigation strategies. In this work, HydroLab is introduced: a hydroponic module that allows for the simultaneous comparison of two types of fertigation strategies and enables remote monitoring and control through IoT functionality. Additionally, HydroLab’s potential to generate technological recommendations has been validated through a case study comparing time-based and solar radiation-based fertigation in lettuce cultivation. The case study successfully showcases the capability of HydroLab to investigate and compare different fertigation strategies. Given the global importance of food security challenges, this work is expected to contribute to the investigation of fertigation strategies in hydroponics.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the drought tolerance of Vicia faba L. using biochar and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) Sphingobacterium pakistanensis (NCCP246) and Cellulomonas pakistanensis (NCCP11) by analyzing the morpho-physiological attributes. All the plant's seeds except control were inoculated with PGPRs before being sowed in triplicates in clay pots with 3 kg of soil and sand (2:1) and 5% biochar. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) spectroscopy were used to evaluate the morphology and elemental makeup of biochar and leaf surface for trichomes diversity. Element composition, pH, and cation exchange capacity of the soil were significantly improved by biochar. Biochar showed porous structure suitable for water holding and microhabitat provision along with mineral composition analyzed via SEM and EDX. The co-application of PGPR and biochar improved the capacity for drought tolerance as analyzed by studying the leaf morphology, which revealed a considerable decrease in the diversity of trichomes. Antioxidant enzymes including catalase, peroxidase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase and dehydroascorbate reductase were significantly boosted up by 44.07-86.58%, 32.06-74.0%, 32.63-61.53%, 31.89-67.24% and 29.41-63.98% respectively. Conclusively, drought mitigation through application of microbes and biochar are metabolic strategies that regulate the activity of antioxidant enzymes, improve plant tolerance by maintaining cellular homeostasis and ameliorate the water potential in agro-ecosystems.

This research aims to evaluate the effect of the potassium–nitrogen balance on strawberry productivity and quality parameters in soilless conditions. A trial was conducted at the Agronomic and Veterinary Hassan II Institute glasshouse in Rabat, during the 2018–2019 crop year. The pot experiment began on November 13 using three different strawberry cultivars: Fortuna, San Andreas and Sabrina. Three nutrient solutions were tested by increasing the potassium–nitrogen balance during the growth stage and decreasing it during the fruit-production stage: S1 (1.3/2.0), S2 (2.6/1.0) and S3 (3.0/0.6). For all treatments, the total dose of fertilizing elements N, P, K, Ca and Mg was identical. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with three replications. The results show that strawberry plants receiving a nutrient solution with a high K:N balance during the growth period and a low balance during the production period present the higher growth and fruit levels. Moreover, the nutrient solution with the 2.6/1.0 balance significantly increased the chlorophyll index by 8%, yield by 30% (7.9 t ha−1), total soluble solids and dry matter content by 14% and 15%, respectively, and improved taste and fruit shelf-life by 10% and 19%, respectively.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the leaf nutrient status of commercially grown strawberries in Latvia during 2014–2022. The results of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Mo and B in 200 strawberry leaf samples from different strawberry-producing farms were analysed over three periods: 2014–2016, 2017–2019, and 2020–2022. According to leaf analyses, plant fertilization was only partly well managed by the growers. During the research period, strawberries in Latvia were generally sufficiently supplied with N, P, K, Mg, Fe, Mn, Mo, and B, while the level of Ca, S, Zn, and Cu was considered low. The deficiency of these nutrients was characteristic for more than 50% of the samples. Since Ca, S, Zn, and Cu are essential for berry formation and quality and contribute to stress resistance; their deficiency could be one of the limiting factors for strawberry yield. The significant positive correlations found between nutrients, including deficient ones, confirmed their close relationship in the uptake process and the importance of sufficient supply. The results clearly indicated that fertilization could currently be an issue that limits the strawberry harvest in Latvia, and adequate provisions of Ca, S, Zn, and B should be the main focus.

Romaine lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. longifolia) was cultivated in a hydroponic system, in the free-standing container equipped with two-shelf racks. The luminous intensity of the upper shelves was 200 μmol m􀀀 2 s􀀀 1, and that of the bottom was 160 μmol m􀀀 2 s􀀀 1. The plants were exposed to light for 16 h each day. Seven cultivars from two groups were cultivated in this study. There were four cultivars from the midi subtype (‘Casual,’ ‘Pivotal,’ ‘Delcaso,’ and ‘Airton’) and three from the mini subtype (‘Xiomara,’ ‘Coventry,’ and ‘Elizium’). The growth period of lettuce in the hydroponic chamber was 30 days. Immediately after harvest, lettuce was evaluated for plant morphological parameters and for the content of macro- and microelements and metabolites with health-promoting properties. Additionally, sensory evaluation was performed and leaf color parameters were measured. The genotype of romaine lettuce had a major impact on its extrinsic and intrinsic properties. The mini cultivars produced lower fresh mass but contained higher amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and boron than varieties from the midi group. The contents of bioactive compounds were higher for midi romaine lettuce than for the mini type. In terms of nitrate, there were significant differences, and lower nitrate levels occurred in the mini group, except in ‘Coventry.’ The results obtained in this study did not allow us to single out any cultivar from the midi group as the best or the worst in terms of chemical composition. Among the mini cultivars, ‘Elizium’ shown the tendency to accumulate a relatively small amount of nitrate and a relatively large amount of chlorophyll, carotenoid, polyphenol and flavonoid. ‘Coventry’ with the lowest chlorophyll, carotenoid, and flavonoid contents was found to be the poorest in bioactive compounds. The sensory evaluation indicated the good quality of all mini and two midi cultivars, while ‘Delcaso’ (midi cultivar) received the worst marks, because of poor smell and crispness and a bitter aftertaste. The higher light intensity (200 μmol m􀀀 2 s􀀀 1) used for plant illumination did not unequivocally increase the content of health-promoting components or improve other characteristics of romaine lettuce compared to the light 160 μmol m􀀀 2 s􀀀 1.
