Marine gastropod eggs are often distributed in the intertidal zone, where they are potentially exposed to short-term salinity and turbidity changes due to heavy rains that may adversely affect their embryonic development. In this study, the embryos of two abalone species, disk abalone Haliotis discus discus and giant abalone Haliotis gigantea, were exposed to various salinities (34, 30, 26, 22, 18 and 14 psu) or turbidities (0, 100, 300, 500 and 700 NTU) for a single 3 h period, and subsequently maintained at normal control conditions (34 psu and 0 NTU). The short-term low salinity stress decreased the hatching and survival rates, and increased the abnormality rate for both species. As for turbidity stress, negative effects on hatching and survival rates were observed in both species when their embryos were exposed to increased turbidity. The abnormality rates of both species at turbidities of 500 and 700 NTU were significantly higher than those at turbidities of 0 and 100 NTU. Overall, exposure of embryos to low salinity or high turbidity for even a short period can clearly have substantial impacts on the embryonic development of the two abalone species, and disk abalone was more sensitive to salinity and turbidity stresses compared to giant abalone.

In this study, we develop a dynamic Inverse Almost Ideal Demand System model to derive own- and cross-price flexibilities for wild-caught fish, Australian farmed salmon and imports of fresh and frozen fish. We find that the growth of fresh fish imports and Australian farmed salmon production have both individually had a significant negative impact on the prices received for Australian wild-caught species, particularly the lower valued species. Continued growth in imports and the farmed salmon sector may negatively impact prices and hence profitability in wild-caught fisheries in Australia in the future.

This paper focuses on the difference in inter-group and intra-group price of Yesso scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) and the simulation accuracy of three different exponential smoothing models in the price. Based on the farm-gate price and wholesale price data of P. yessoensis in Changhai county from January 2017 to December 2018, this study uses the Wilcoxon rank sum test to compare the inter- and intra-group price and applies simple exponential smoothing (SES), Holt’s linear trend method, and Holt-Winters’ additive method to simulate and predict the price. The results suggest that (i) to improve economic benefits, it is necessary to formulate reasonable farming area and establish low-density ecological cultivation mode; (ii) the price’s Akaike information criterion (AIC) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) values by the SES model are optimal, and the MAPE value is lower than 4%; and (iii) the result of SES analysis shows no obvious change from January to March 2019.

This special issue of Aquaculture Economics & Management features five articles based on contributions to the International Association of Aquaculture Economics & Management (IAAEM) sponsored section on economics and marketing at the World Aquaculture Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana, February 19–22, 2015. The IAAEM session was conducted over 2 days with 36 presentations in the program. The presentations highlight the increased importance of aquaculture, as production and trade are expected to continue to increase. That implies that there are economic decisions to be made at all stages in the supply chain from input providers, in production, in the supply chain, and in addressing consumer preferences. This is largely reflected by the variety of topics addressed in this special issue. Although five articles in this special issue can never represent the full extent of topics and species that were covered in all presentations, they provide a fair indication of the variation when it comes to topics, but less so when it comes to species. It is worthwhile noting that, although there is an increasing focus on markets and demand, the special issue does not quite do justice to the many interesting contributions on the production side. It is also interesting to note how a number of the topics build on what was presented at Aquaculture Americas 2013 and 2014.

Australia has experienced a significant increase in seafood imports over the past two decades. Concurrently, Australian seafood producers have raised concerns that the low market prices of imported fish may negatively affect the prices of domestically produced seafood and, subsequently, the profitability of the Australian fishing industries. To validate this concern, this study examines the relationship between prices of domestically produced seafood and imported fish. Price data from the Sydney Fish Market (SFM), Australia’s largest auction wholesale fish market and fish import data are used for a cointegration analysis which is conducted using the bivariate Johansen test. Results indicate that prices of most domestic species traded within the SFM are not cointegrated, implying that they largely develop independently of each other. However, imported fish, particularly fresh imports, were found to be cointegrated with Australian produced fresh fish supplies traded on the SFM. Although the law of one price (LOP) was only confirmed to hold for some price pairs, the results suggest a partial substitution relationship between imports and domestically caught fish. This implies that prices of domestically produced fish within the Australian market are likely impacted by price dynamics within the international seafood market.

International fishery access agreements allow fishermen from one country to harvest fish in another country’s waters. We empirically examine why countries sign fisheries access agreements with each other and compare these to the characteristics of countries that choose to undertake international trade. Using a unique global panel dataset, we show that access agreements and fish exports are driven by two key motives: a pattern of comparative advantage in fishing, which depends on fish stocks and fishing capacities; and gravity factors of economic size and distance. Our results suggest that most gravity factors work similarly for the dual pathways of agreements and exports: larger countries that are closer to each other are more likely to sign access agreements or to trade. However, the pattern of advantage is determined differently: source countries with larger fishing capacity are more likely to export fish, while source countries with lower fishing capacity are more likely to sign agreements.

This article seeks to extend knowledge of the mackerel (Scomber scombrus) market in the Basque Country (a region in Spain) by analysing possible relationships between this and other species with similar characteristics such as the sardine (Sardina pilchardus), the horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus) and the Atlantic chub mackerel (Scomber colias), all of them landed at the ports of the Basque Country. Specifically, the goal is to learn whether these other species can be considered as mackerel substitutes. To that end, a fractional cointegration analysis of different series of historical prices is performed using a novel method never before used in studies of this type. The results indicate that mackerel have no substitutes, and thus form a mono-species regional market. This implies, among other things, that their price is not influenced by the prices of other species, and this should be taken into account by managers when designing management measures and policies to improve the sustainability of the fishing of this species.

The temperate-water Pacific abalone, Haliotis discus hannai, has replaced the local subtropical species Haliotis diversicolor, as the main cultured abalone species in southern China in recent years. Although the ability to tolerate high temperature has increased for Pacific abalone, summer mortality still has a serious effect on cultivation success, as the temperature in southern China is significantly higher than the temperature in natural habitats. Hybridization has been demonstrated as an effective way to improve adaptability to particular environmental conditions. In this study, we introduced green abalone, Haliotis fulgens, from North America into China and successfully conducted hybridization trials with Pacific abalone. Fertilization rate for H. discus hannai♀ × H. fulgens♂ was at an acceptable level for commercial production. The hybrids exhibited hybrid vigor for growth and survival, as well as a higher temperature tolerance, showing great potential for application in the abalone aquaculture industry in southern China. Moreover, two-step PCR methods using three primers were developed, which can be used for quick genetic identification of green abalone, Pacific abalone and their reciprocal hybrids. Statement of relevance Summer mortality still has a serious effect on cultivation success of abalone farming in China. In this study, green abalone, H. fulgens were introduced and successfully conducted hybridization trials with Pacific abalone. The hybrids exhibited exciting hybrid vigor and adaptation to the higher temperature tolerance, which showed great potentials on application to the abalone aquaculture industry in southern China.
